Note:The work of E. Hopf and G.A. Hedlund, in the 1930s, on transitivity and ergodicity of the geodesic flow for hyperbolic surfaces, marked the beginning of the investigation of the statistical properties and stochastic behavior ofthe flow. The first cen tral limit theorem for the geodesic flow was proved in the 1960s by Y. Sinai for compact hyperbolic manifolds. Since then, strong relationships have been found between the fields of ergodic theory, analysis, andgeometry. Different approaches and new tools have been developed to study the geodesic flow, including measure theory, thermodynamic formalism, transfer operators, Laplace operators, and Brownian motion. All these different points ofview have led to a deep understanding of more general dynamical sy stems, in particular the so-called Anosov systems, with applications to geometric problems such as counting, equirepartition, mixing, and recurrence properties of theorbits. This book comprises two independent texts that provide a self-contained introduct ion to two different approaches to the investigation of hyperbolic dynamics. The first text, by S. Le Borgne, explains the method of martingalesfor the central limit theorem. This approach can be used in several situations, even for weakly hyperbolic flow s, and the author presents a good number of examples and applications to equirepartition and mixing. The second text, by F.Faure and M. Tsujii, concerns the semiclassical approach, by operator theory: chaotic dynamics is described through the spectrum of the associated transfer operator, with applications to the asymptotic counting of periodic orbits. By relaxing the constraints of the Stokes hypothesis, themathematical theory of multipolar viscous fluids gen eralizes the standard Navier-Stokes model.The rigorous theory of multipolar viscous fluids is compatible with all known thermodynamical processes and the principle of materialframe indifference this is in contrast with the formulation of most non-Newtonia n fluid flow models which result from ad hoc assumptions about the relation between the stress tensor and the velocity. The higher-order boundaryconditions, which must be formulated for multipolar viscous flow problems, are a rigorous consequence of the p rinciple of virtual work this is in stark contrast to the approach employed by authors who have studied the regularizingeffects of adding artificial viscosity, in the form of higher order spatial derivatives, to the Navier-Stokes model. A number of resea rch groups, primarily in the United States, Germany, Eastern Europe, and China, have explored theconsequences of multipolar viscous fluid models these efforts, and those of the authors, which are described in this book, have focused on the solution of pro blems in the context of specific geometries, on the existence of weak andclassical solutions, and on dynamical systems aspects of the theory. Binary pulsars our best laboratories for general relativity are studied in considerable detail. An introduction to gravitational lensing theory isincluded as well, so as to make the current literature on the subject accessible to readers. Considerable attention is devoted to the study of compact objects, especially to black holes. This includes a detailed derivation of the Kerrsolution, Israels proof of his uniqueness theorem, and a derivation of the b asic laws of black hole physics. Part II ends with Wittens proof of the positive energy theorem, which is presented in detail, together with the requiredtools on spin structures and spinor analysis. In Part III, all of the differential geometric tools req uired are developed in detail. A great deal of effort went into refining and improving the text for the new edition. New material hasbeen added, including a chapter on cosmology. The book addresses undergraduate and graduate students in physics, astrophys ics and mathematics. It utilizes a very well structured approach, which should help it continue to be a standardwork for a modern treatment of gravitational physics. Whileseveral excellent books on Khler-Einstein geometry are available, there have been no such works on the Khler-Ricci flow. The Ricci flow was first introduced by R. Hamilton in the early 1980s, and is centralin G. Perelmans celebrated proof of the Poincar conjecture. When specialized f or Khler manifolds, it becomes the Khler-Ricci flow, and reduces to a scalar PDE (parabolic complex Monge-Ampre equation). As a spin-off of hisbreakthrough, G. Perelman proved the convergence of the Khler-Ricci flow on Khler-Einstein manifolds of positive scalar curvature (Fano manifolds). Shortly after, G. Tian and J. Song discovered a complex analogue of Perelmansideas: the Khler-Ricci flow is a metric embodiment of the Minimal Model Program of the underlying manifold, and flips and divisorial contracti ons assume the role of Perelmans surgeries

Note:The book provides the proof of a complex geometric version of a well-known result in algebraic geometry: the theorem of RiemannRochGrothendieck for proper submersions. It gives an equality of cohomology classes inBottChern cohomology, which is a refi nement for complex manifolds of de Rham cohomology. When the manifolds are Khler, our main result is known. A proof can be given using the elliptic Hodge theory of the fibres, its deformationvia Quillen's superconnections, and a version in families of the 'fantastic cancellations' of McKeanSinger in local index theory. In the general case, this approach breaks down because the cancellations do not occur any more.Onetool used in the book is a deformation of the Hodge theory of the fibres to a hypoelliptic Hodge theory, in such a way that the relevant cohomological information is preserved, and 'fantastic cancellations' do occur for thedeformation. The deformed hypoelliptic Laplacian acts on the total space of the relative tangent bundle of the fibres. Whil e the original hypoelliptic Laplacian discovered by the author can be described in terms of the harmonicoscillator along the tangent bundle and of the geodesic flow, here, the harmonic oscillator has to be replaced by a quartic oscillator.Another idea dev eloped in the book is that while classical elliptic Hodge theory is based on theHermitian product on forms, the hypoelliptic theory involves a Hermitian pairing which is a mild modification of intersection pairing. Probabilistic considerations play an imp ortant role, either as a motivation of some constructions,or in the proofs themselves

Note:This text is meant to deepen its readers understanding of vector calculus, differential geometry and related subjects in applied mathematics. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this text invites itsaudience to take a fresh loo k at previously learned material through the prism of tensor calculus. Once the framework is mastered, the student is introduced to new material which includes differential geometry on manifolds, shapeoptimization, boundary perturbation, and dynamic fluid film equations. Tensor calculus is a powerful tool that combines the geometric and analytical perspectives and enables us to take full advantage of the computational utility ofcoordinate systems. The tensor approach can be of benefit to members of all te chnical sciences including mathematics and all engineering disciplines. If calculus and linear algebra are central to the readers scientific endeavors,tensor calculus is indispensable. The language of tensors, originally championed by Einstein, is as fund amental as the languages of calculus and linear algebra and is one that every technical scientist ought to speak. The tensortechnique, invented at the turn of the 20th century, is now considered classical. Yet, as the author shows, it remains remarkably v ital and relevant. The authors skilled lecturing capabilities are evident by the inclusion ofinsightful examples and a plethora of exercises. A great deal of material is devoted to the geometric fundamentals, the mechanics of change of variables, the prop er use of the tensor notation, and the discussion of the interplaybetween algebra and geometry. The early chapters have many words and few equations. The definition of a tensor comes only in Chapter 6 when the reader is ready for it.
