Note:This book results from recent studies aimed at answering questions raised by astrophycists who use values of transport coefficients that are old and often unsatisfactory. The few books dealing with the rigorous kinetic theory of aionized plasma are b ased on the so called Landau (Fokker-Planck) equation and they seldom relate the microscopic results with their macroscopic counterpart provided by classical non-equilibrium thermodynamics. In this book both issuesare thoroughly covered. Starting from the full Boltzmann equation for inert dilute plasmas and using the Hilbert-Chapman-Enskog method to solve the first two approximations in Knudsens parameter, we construct all the transportproperties of the system within the framework of linear irreversible t hermodynamics. This includes a systematic study of all possible cross effects (which, except for a few cases, were never treated in the literature) as well as thefamous H-theorem. The equations of magneto-hydrodynamics for dilute plasmas, including the ra ther surprising results obtained for the viscomagnetic effects, may be now fully assessed. This book will be of immediate interest to theplasma physics community, as well as to astrophysicists. It is also likely to make an impact in the field of cold plas mas, involving laser cooled Rydberg atoms

Note:It is well established and appreciated by now that more than 99% of the baryonic matter in the universe is in the plasma state. Most astrophysical systems could be approximated as conducting fluids in a gravitational field. It isthe combined effect o f these two that gives rise to the mind boggling variety of configurations in the form of filaments, loops , jets and arches. The plasma structures that cannot last for more than a second or less in a laboratoryremain intact for astronomical time and spat ial scales in an astrophysical setting. The case in point is the well known extragalactic jets whose collimation and stability has remained an enigma inspite of the efforts of many for manylong years. The high energy radiation sources such as the active g alactic nuclei again summon the coherent plasma radiation processes for their exceptionally large output from regions of relatively small physical sizes. The generationof magnetic field, anomalous transport of angular momentum with decisive bearing on sta r formation processes, the ubiquitous MHD turbulence under conditions irreproducible in terrestrial laboratories are some of the generic issuesstill awaiting a concerted effort for their understanding. Quantum Plasmas, pair plasmas and pair-ion plasmas ex ist under extreme conditions in planetary interiors and exotic stars. In this workshop plasma physicists, astrophysicistsand plasma astrophysicists are brought together to discuss these issues

Two complementary approaches, the binary collision model and the dielectric theory areinvestigated in both analyt ical and numerical frameworks. In the binary collision model, the Coulomb interaction between the test and the target particles is screened because of the polarization of the target. In the continuumdielectric theory one considers the interactions between the test particle and its polarization cloud. Note:The search for table-top and repetitive pump schemes during the last decade has been the driving force behind the spectacular advances demonstrated during the 10th International Conference on X-Ray Lasers, organized in 2006 inBerlin.
