Note:This text is devoted to the theoretical studies of radiation effects on mammals. It uses the framework of developed deterministic mathematical models to investigate the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation in a wide rangeof doses and dose ra tes on vital body systems including hematopoiesis, small intestine and humoral immunity, as well as on the development of autoimmune diseases. Thus, these models can contribute to the development of the system andquantitative approaches in radiation biolo gy and ecology. This text is also of practical use. Its modeling studies of the dynamics of granulocytopoiesis and thrombocytopoiesis in humans testify to the efficiency of employment of thedeveloped models in the investigation and prediction of radiation effects on these hematopoietic lines. These models, as well as the properly identified models of other vital body systems, could provide a better understanding of theradiation risks to health. The modeling predictions will enable the implementation of mo re effective preventive and protective measures for people residing in areas with elevated radiation background and astronauts on long-term spacemissions. Lastly, the models of the radiation-induced mortality established the theoretical foundations of a n ew individual-based approach to radiation risk assessment. These models thus enable one to predict the mortality dynamics andaverage life-span shortening for individuals and populations exposed to acute and low-level chronic radiation. Because of its theo retical and practical benefits, this book is as useful for academics, scientists and researchers workingin the field of mathematical modeling of biological systems as it is for those working in the fields of radiation biology, ecology and medicine. It is equally useful for Aerospace companies and various corporations that contend withthe problems of environmental protection and radiation safety

Note:Voltage-sensitive ion channels are macromolecules embedded in the membranes of nerve and muscle fibers of animals. Because of their physiological functions, biochemical structures and electrical switching properties, they are atan intersection of bio logy, chemistry and physics. Despite decades of intensive research under the traditional approach of gated structural pores, the relation between the structure of these molecules and their function remainsenigmatic. This book critically examines physicall y oriented approaches not covered in other ion-channel books. It looks at optical and thermal as well as electrical data, and at studies in the frequency domain as well as in the timedomain. Rather than presenting the reader with only an option of mechani stic models at an inappropriate pseudo-macroscopic scale, it emphasizes concepts established in organic chemistry and condensed state physics. The booksapproach to the understanding of these unique structures breaks with the unproven view of ion channels as structurally gated pores. Rather, it proposes gateless gating, in which the onset and cessation of avalanches of ions crossingthe membrane is explained as a cooperative phenomenon in a system poised far from equilibrium. These events, called channel op ening and closing, are initiated by an electrical depolarization, a mechanical stimulus or even a thermalfluctuation

Note:The goal of this book is to disseminate information on the worldwide status and trends in biosensing R&D to government decisionmakers and the research community. The contributors critically analyze and compare biosensing researchin the United States with that being pursued in Japan, Europe and other major industrialized countries. Biosensing includes systems that incorporate a variety of means, including electrical, electronic, and photonic devices biologicalmaterials (e.g., tissue, enzymes, nucleic acids, etc.) and chemical analysis to produce detectable signals for the monitoring or identification of biological phenomena.
