Title: | A Course in Lens Design [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Chris Velzel |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | A Course in Lens Design is an instruction in the design of image-forming optical systems. It teaches how a satisfactory design can be obtained in a straightforward way. Theory is limited to a minimum, and used to support thepractical design work. The book introduces geometrical optics, optical instruments and aberrations. It gives a description of the process of lens design and of the strategies used in this process. Half of its content is devoted to thedesign of sixteen types of lenses, described in detail from beginning to end. This book is different from most other books on lens design because it stresses the importance of the initial phases of the design process: (paraxial)lay-out and (thin-lens) pre-design. The argument for this change of accent is that in these phases much information can be obtained about the properties of the lens to be designed. This information can be used in later phases of thedesign. This makes A Course in Lens Design a useful self-study book, and a suitable basis for an introductory course in lens design. The mathematics mainly used is college algebra, in a few sections calculus is applied. The book couldbe used by students of engineering and technical physics, and by engineers and scientists |

Title: | Complex Plasmas [electronic resource] : Scientific Challenges and Technological Opportunities |
Author(s): |
Michael Bonitz Jose Lopez Kurt Becker Hauke Thomsen |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides the reader with an introduction to the physics of complex plasmas, a discussion of the specific scientific and technical challenges they present, and an overview of their potential technological applications.Complex plasmas differ from conventional high-temperature plasmas in several ways: they may contain additional species, including nanometer- to micrometer-sized particles, negative ions, molecules and radicals, and they may exhibitstrong correlations or quantum effects. This bo ok introduces the classical and quantum mechanical approaches used to describe and simulate complex plasmas. It also covers some key experimental techniques used in the analysis of theseplasmas, including calorimetric probe methods, IR absorption techniqu es and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The final part of the book reviews the emerging applications of microcavity and microchannel plasmas, the synthesis and assemblyof nanomaterials through plasma electrochemistry, the large-scale generation of ozone usi ng microplasmas, and novel applications of atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasmas in dentistry. Going beyond the scope of traditional plasmatexts, the presentation is very well suited for senior undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral research ers specializing in plasma physics |

Note: | Modern techniques from quantum field theory are applied in this work to the description of ultracold quantum gases. This leads to a unified description of many phenomena including superfluidity for bosons and fermions, classicaland quantum phase tran sitions, different dimensions, thermodynamic properties and few-body phenomena as bound state formation or the Efimov effect. The non-perturbative treatment with renormalization group flow equations can accountfor all known limiting cases by solving one s ingle equation. It improves previous results quantitatively and brings qualitatively new insights. As an example, new quantum phase transitions are found for fermions with three spin states.Ultracold atomic gases can be seen as an interesting model for fe atures of high energy physics and for condensed matter theory. The research reported in this thesis helps to solve the difficult complexity problem in modern theoreticalphysics |

Note: | Using the quantum properties of single photons to exchange binary keys between two partners for subsequent encryption of secret data is an absolutely novel technology. Only a few years ago quantum cryptography or better:quantum key distribution was the domain of basic research laboratories at universities. But during the last few years things changed. QKD left the laboratories and was picked up by more practical oriented teams that worked hard todevelop a practically applicable technology out of th e astonishing results of basic research. One major milestone towards a QKD technology was a large research and development project funded by the European Commission that aimed atcombining quantum physics with complementary technologies that are necessary to create a technical solution: electronics, software, and network components were added within the project SECOQC (Development of a Global Network for SecureCommunication based on Quantum Cryptography) that teamed up all expertise on European level to ge t a technology for future encryption. The practical application of QKD in a standard optical fibre network was demonstrated October 2008in Vienna, giving a glimpse of the future of secure communication. Although many steps have still to be done in order t o achieve a real mature technology, the corner stone for future secure communication is already laid. QKD will notbe the Holy Grail of security, it will not be able to solve all problems for evermore. But QKD has the potential to replace one of the weakes t parts of symmetric encryption: the exchange of the key. It can be proven that the keyexchange process cannot be corrupted and that keys that are generated and exchanged quantum cryptographically will be secure for ever (as long as some additional condit ions are kept). This book will show the state of the art of QuantumCryptography and it will sketch how it can be implemented in standard communication infrastructure. The growing vulnerability of |

Note: | This graduate-level textbook is a detailed exposition of key mathematical tools in analysis aimed at students, researchers, and practitioners across science and engineering. Every topic covered has been specifically chosenbecause it plays a key role outside the field of pure mathematics. Although the treatment of each topic is mathematical in nature, and concrete applications are not delineated, the principles and tools presented are fundamental toexploring the computational aspects of physics and en gineering. A central theme of the book is the structure of various vector spacesmost importantly, Hilbert spacesand expansions of elements in these spaces in terms of bases.Key topics and features include: * More than 150 exercises * Abstract and normed v ector spaces * Approximation in normed vector spaces * Hilbert and Banach spaces * General bases and orthonormal bases * Linear operators on variousnormed spaces * The Fourier transform, including the discrete Fourier transform * Wavelets and multiresolut ion analysis * B-splines * SturmLiouville problems As a textbook that provides a deep understanding of central issues inmathematical analysis, Functions, Spaces, and Expansions is intended for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in applied m athematics, physics, and engineering. Readers are expected to have a solid understanding of linearalgebra, in Rn and in general vector spaces. Familiarity with the basic concepts of calculus and real analysis, including Riemann integrals and infinite seri es of real or complex numbers, is also required. Functions, Spaces, andExpansions is the main textbook for the e-course Mathematics 4: Real Analysis currently being taught at the Technical University of Denmark. Note: | This new approach to real analysis stresses the use of the subject in applications, showing how the principles and theory of real analysis can be applied in various settings. Applications cover approximation by polynomials, discrete dynamical systems, differential equations, Fourier series and physics, Fourier series and approximation, wavelets, and convexity and optimization. Each chapter has many useful exercises. The treatment of the basic theorycovers the real numbers, functions, and calculus, whi le emphasizing the role of normed vector spaces, and particularly of Rn. The applied chapters are mostly independent, giving the reader a choice of topics. This book is appropriatefor students with a prior knowledge of both calculus and linear algebra who want a careful development of both analysis and its use in applications. Review of the previous version of this book, Real Analysis with Real Applications: Awell balanced book! The first solid analysis course, with proofs, is central in the offerings of any math.-dept. ---and yet, the new books that hit the market don't always hit the mark: the balance between theory and applications,---between technical proofs and intuitive ideas, ---between classical and modern subjects, and between real life exercises vs. the ones that drill a new concept. The Davidson-Donsig book is outstanding, and it does hit the mark.Palle E. T. Jorgenson, Review from Amazon.com Kenneth R. Title: | Homogenization of Partial Differential Equations [electronic resource] |

Publisher: | Boston, MA : Birkhuser Boston |

Note: | Homogenization is a method for modeling processes in microinhomogeneous media, which are encountered in radiophysics, filtration theory, rheology, elasticity theory, and other domains of mechanics, physics, and technology. Theseprocesses are describe d by PDEs with rapidly oscillating coefficients or boundary value problems in domains with complex microstructure. From the technical point of view, given the complexity of these processes, the best techniques tosolve a wide variety of problems involve co nstructing appropriate macroscopic (homogenized) models. The present monograph is a comprehensive study of homogenized problems, based on the asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems asthe characteristic scales of the microstructure decrease to zero . The work focuses on the construction of nonstandard models: non-local models, multicomponent models, and models with memory. Along with complete proofs of all mainresults, numerous examples of typical structures of microinhomogeneous media with their co rresponding homogenized models are provided. Graduate students, applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers will benefit from thismonograph, which may be used in the classroom or as a comprehensive reference text |
