Title:A Course in Lens Design [electronic resource]
Author(s): Chris Velzel
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:A Course in Lens Design is an instruction in the design of image-forming optical systems. It teaches how a satisfactory design can be obtained in a straightforward way. Theory is limited to a minimum, and used to support thepractical design work. The book introduces geometrical optics, optical instruments and aberrations. It gives a description of the process of lens design and of the strategies used in this process. Half of its content is devoted to thedesign of sixteen types of lenses, described in detail from beginning to end. This book is different from most other books on lens design because it stresses the importance of the initial phases of the design process: (paraxial)lay-out and (thin-lens) pre-design. The argument for this change of accent is that in these phases much information can be obtained about the properties of the lens to be designed. This information can be used in later phases of thedesign. This makes A Course in Lens Design a useful self-study book, and a suitable basis for an introductory course in lens design. The mathematics mainly used is college algebra, in a few sections calculus is applied. The book couldbe used by students of engineering and technical physics, and by engineers and scientists

Title:Nonlinear Analysis [electronic resource] : Approximation Theory, Optimization and Applications
Author(s): Qamrul Hasan Ansari
Date:2014
Publisher:New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Many of our daily-life problems can be written in the form of an optimization problem. Therefore, solution methods are needed to solve such problems. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is not always easy to find the exactsolution. However, app roximate solutions can be found. The theory of the best approximation is applicable in a variety of problems arising in nonlinear functional analysis and optimization. This book highlights interesting aspects ofnonlinear analysis and optimization together with many applications in the areas of physical and social sciences including engineering. It is immensely helpful for young graduates and researchers who are pursuing research in thisfield, as it provides abundant research resources for researchers and post-doctoral fellows. This will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who works in the field of applied mathematics, economics and engineering

Title:Convergence Methods for Double Sequences and Applications [electronic resource]
Author(s): M Mursaleen
S.A Mohiuddine
Date:2014
Publisher:New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book exclusively deals with the study of almost convergence and statistical convergence of double sequences. The notion of almost convergence is perhaps the most useful notion in order to obtain a weak limit of abounded non-convergent sequence. There is another notion of convergence known as the statistical convergence, introduced by H. Fast, which is an extension of the usual concept of sequential limits. This concept arises as anexample of convergence in density which is also studied as a summ ability method. Even unbounded sequences can be dealt with by using this method. The book also discusses the applications of these non-matrix methods inapproximation theory. Written in a self-contained style, the book discusses in detail the methods of al most convergence and statistical convergence for double sequences along with applications and suitable examples. The last chapter isdevoted to the study convergence of double series and describes various convergence tests analogous to those of single sequ ences. In addition to applications in approximation theory, the results are expected to find application in manyother areas of pure and applied mathematics such as mathematical analysis, probability, fixed point theory and statistics

Title:Nevanlinna Theory in Several Complex Variables and Diophantine Approximation [electronic resource]
Author(s): Junjiro Noguchi
Jrg Winkelmann
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive account of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory and its relations with Diophantine approximation theory for graduate students and interested researchers. This book with ninechapters systematically de scribes Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic maps between algebraic varieties or complex spaces, building up from the classical theory of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with full proofs in Chap. 1 tothe current state of research. Chapter 2 present s the First Main Theorem for coherent ideal sheaves in a very general form. With the preparation of plurisubharmonic functions, how the theory to be generalized in a higher dimension isdescribed. In Chap. 3 the Second Main Theorem for differentiably non-d egenerate meromorphic maps by Griffiths and others is proved as a prototype of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory. Establishing such a Second Main Theorem forentire curves in general complex algebraic varieties is a wide-open problem. In Chap. 4, the Ca rtan-Nochka Second Main Theorem in the linear projective case and the Logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai Theorem in the case of general algebraicvarieties are proved. Then the theory of entire curves in semi-abelian varieties, including the Second Main Theorem of N oguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi, is dealt with in full details in Chap. 6. For that purpose Chap. 5 is devoted to thenotion of semi-abelian varieties. The result leads to a number of applications. With these results, the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problems are dis cussed in Chap. 7. In the last two chapters Diophantine approximation theory is dealt withfrom the viewpoint of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory, and the Lang-Vojta conjecture is confirmed in some cases. In Chap. 8 the theory over function fields is d iscussed. Finally, in Chap. 9, the theorems of Roth, Schmidt,Faltings, and Vojta over number fields are presented and formulated in view of Nevanlinna theory with results motivated by those in Chaps. 4,

Title:A Measure Theoretical Approach to Quantum Stochastic Processes [electronic resource]
Author(s): Wilhelm Waldenfels
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This monograph takes as starting point that abstract quantum stochastic processes can be understood as a quantum field theory in one space and in one time coordinate. As a result it is appropriate to represent operators as powerseries of creation and annihilation operators in normal-ordered form, which can be achieved using classical measure theory. Considering in detail four basic examples (e.g. a two-level atom coupled to a heat bath of oscillators), ineach case the Hamiltonian of the associated o ne-parameter strongly continuous group is determined and the spectral decomposition is explicitly calculated in the form of generalized eigen-vectors. Advanced topics include the theoryof the Hudson-Parthasarathy equation and the amplified oscillator pro blem. To that end, a chapter on white noise calculus has also been included

Title:Control of Nonholonomic Systems: from Sub-Riemannian Geometry to Motion Planning [electronic resource]
Author(s): Frdric Jean
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Nonholonomic systems are control systems which depend linearly on the control. Their underlying geometry is the sub-Riemannian geometry, which plays for these systems the same role as Euclidean geometry does for linear systems. Inparticular the usual notions of approximations at the first order, that are essential for control purposes, have to be defined in terms of this geometry. The aim of these notes is to present these notions of approximation and theirapplication to the motion planning problem f or nonholonomic systems

Title:Many-Electron Approaches in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics [electronic resource] : A Multidisciplinary View
Author(s): Volker Bach
Luigi Delle Site
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book provides a broad description of the development and (computational) application of many-electron approaches from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the context of studying many-electron systems Computer Science,Chemistry, Mathematics and P hysics are all intimately interconnected. However, beyond a handful of communities working at the interface between these disciplines, there is still a marked separation of subjects. This book seeks to offera common platform for possible exchanges between the various fields and to introduce the reader to perspectives for potential further developments across the disciplines. The rapid advances of modern technology will inevitably requiresubstantial improvements in the approaches currently used, which will in turn make exchanges between disciplines indispensable. In essence this book is one of the very first attempts at an interdisciplinary approach to themany-electron problem

Title:An Introduction to Relativistic Processes and the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions [electronic resource]
Author(s): Carlo M Becchi
Giovanni Ridolfi
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:These lectures are meant to be a reference and handbook for an introductory course in Theoretical Particle Physics, suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students. Their purpose is to reconcile theoreticalrigour and completeness with a careful analysis of more phenomenological aspects of the physics. They aim at filling the gap between quantum field theory textbooks and purely phenomenological treatments of fundamental interactions. Thefirst part provides an introduction to scatt ering in relativistic quantum field theory. Thanks to an original approach to relativistic processes, the relevant computational techniques are derived cleanly and simply in thesemi-classical approximation. The second part contains a detailed presentation of the gauge theory of electroweak interactions with particular focus to the processes of greatest phenomenological interest. The main novelties of thepresent second edition are a more complete discussion of relativistic scattering theory and an expansio n of the study of the corrections to the semi-classical approximation, including important processes in LHC physics. The extensionof the standard model to include neutrino masses and oscillations is also discussed, and updated with new results

Note:The book gives an introduction to the field quantization (second quantization) of light and matter with applications to atomic physics. The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics andthe basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light fieldquantization in the description of electr omagnetic transitions. In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects ofexternal electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra ( Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variationalmethod, the density functional theory, and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Fin ally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrdinger field, which gives apowerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned

Title:Slow Viscous Flow [electronic resource]
Author(s): William E Langlois
Michel O Deville
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Leonardo wrote, 'Mechanics is the paradise of the mathematical sciences, because by means of it one comes to the fruits of mathematics' replace 'Mechanics' by 'Fluid mechanics' and here we are. - from the Preface to theSecond Edition Although the ex ponential growth of computer power has advanced the importance of simulations and visualization tools for elaborating new models, designs and technologies, the discipline of fluid mechanics is still large, and turbulence in flows remains a challenging prob lem in classical physics. Like its predecessor, the revised and expanded Second Edition of this book addresses the basic principles of fluid mechanics and solves fluid flow problemswhere viscous effects are the dominant physical phenomena. Much progress h as occurred in the nearly half a century that has passed since the edition of 1964. As predicted, aspects of hydrodynamics once considered offbeat have risen toimportance. For example, the authors have worked on problems where variations in viscosity and surface tension cannot be ignored. The advent of nanotechnology has broadened interest in the hydrodynamics of thin films, and hydromagneticeffects and radiative heat transfer are routinely encountered in materials processing. This monograph develops the basic equations, in the three most important coordinate systems, in a way that makes it easy to incorporate thesephenomena into the theory. The book originally described by Prof. Langlois as a monograph on theoretical hydrodynamics, written in the languag e of applied mathematics offers considerable new coverage including the second principleof thermodynamics, Boussinesq approximation, time dependent flows, Marangoni convection, Kovasznay flow, plane periodic solutions, Hele-Shaw cells, Stokeslets, rotlets , finite element methods, Wannier flow, corner eddies, and analysisof the Stokes operator

Title:Manis Valuations and Prfer Extensions II [electronic resource]
Author(s): Manfred Knebusch
Tobias Kaiser
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume is a sequel to Manis Valuation and Prfer Extensions I, LNM1791. The Prfer extensions of a commutative ring A are roughly those commutative ring extensions R / A,where commutative algebra is governed by Manisvaluations on R with integral v alues on A. These valuations then turn out to belong to the particularly amenable subclass of PM (=Prfer-Manis) valuations. While in Volume I Prfer extensions in general and individual PM valuationswere studied, now the focus is on families of PM valuatio ns. One highlight is the presentation of a very general and deep approximation theorem for PM valuations, going back to Joachim Grters work in 1980, a far-reaching extensionof the classical weak approximation theorem in arithmetic. Another highlight is a theory of so called Kronecker extensions, where PM valuations are put to use in arbitrary commutative ring extensions in a way that ultimatelygoes back to the work of Leopold Kronecker

Title:Convergence Estimates in Approximation Theory [electronic resource]
Author(s): Vijay Gupta
Ravi P Agarwal
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The study of linear positive operators is an area of mathematical studies with significant relevance to studies of computer-aided geometric design, numerical analysis, and differential equations. This book focuses on theconvergence of linear positive operators in real and complex domains. The theoretical aspects of these operators have been an active area of research over the past few decades. In this volume, authors Gupta and Agarwal explore new andmore efficient methods of applying this research to studies in Optimization and Analysis. The text will be of interest to upper-level students seeking an introduction to the field and to researchers developing innovative approaches

Title:Strong and Weak Approximation of Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations [electronic resource]
Author(s): Raphael Kruse
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In this book we analyze the error caused by numerical schemes for the approximation of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (SEEq) in a Hilbert space-valued setting. The numerical schemes considered combine Galerkin finiteelement methods with Eu ler-type temporal approximations. Starting from a precise analysis of the spatio-temporal regularity of the mild solution to the SEEq, we derive and prove optimal error estimates of the strong error ofconvergence in the first part of the book. The second part deals with a new approach to the so-called weak error of convergence, which measures the distance between the law of the numerical solution and the law of the exact solution. This approach is based on Bismuts integration by parts formula and the Malli avin calculus for infinite dimensional stochastic processes. These techniques are developed and explained in a separate chapter, before the weak convergenceis proven for linear SEEq
