Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Statistical shape analysis is a geometrical analysis from a set of shapes in which statistics are measured to describe geometrical properties from similar shapes or different groups, for instance, the difference between male andfemale Gorilla skull s hapes, normal and pathological bone shapes, etc. Some of the important aspects of shape analysis are to obtain a measure of distance between shapes, to estimate average shapes from a (possibly random) sample andto estimate shape variability in a sample[1] . One of the main methods used is principal component analysis. Specific applications of shape analysis may befound in archaeology, architecture, biology, geography, geology, agriculture, genetics, medical imaging, security applications such as face recogn ition, entertainment industry (movies, games), computer-aided design and manufacturing. This is a proposal for a new Brief on statistical shape analysis and thevarious new parametric and non-parametric methods utilized to facilitate shape analysis.

Title:The Stones and the Stars [electronic resource] Building Scotland's Newest Megalith
Author(s): Duncan Lunan
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:There are at least 48 identified prehistoric stone circles in Scotland. In truth, very little is known about the people who erected them, and ultimately about what the stone circles were for. Most stone circles areastronomically aligned, which has le d to the modern debate over the significance of the alignments. The megaliths certainly represented an enormous cooperative effort, would at the very least have demonstrated power and wealth, andbeing set away from any dwellings probably served a ceremoni al, or perhaps religious, purpose. Observations at the site of the stone circles, of solar, lunar, and stellar events, have already cast light on some of the questions aboutthe construction and use of ancient megalithic observatories. In his capacity as m anager of the Glasgow Parks Department Astronomy Project, author Duncan Lunan designed and built in the late 1970s Sighthill, the first astronomicallyaligned stone circle in Britain in over 3,000 years. The Stones and the Stars examines the case for astro nomical alignments of stone circles and charts the development of a fascinating project with a strong scientific and historicalflavor. The work was documented in detail by artist and photographer Gavin Roberts, and the book contains a large selection of i llustrations that bring the project vividly to life

Title:Exploring Ancient Skies [electronic resource] : A Survey of Ancient and Cultural Astronomy
Author(s): David H Kelley
Eugene F Milone
Date:2011
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Exploring Ancient Skies brings together the methods of archaeology and the insights of modern astronomy to explore the science of astronomy as it was practiced in various cultures prior to the invention of the telescope. The bookreviews an enormous a nd growing body of literature on the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean, the Far East, and the New World (particularly Mesoamerica), putting the ancient astronomical materials into their archaeological andcultural contexts. The authors begin with an ov erview of the field and proceed to essential aspects of naked-eye astronomy, followed by an examination of specific cultures. The book concludes by taking into account the purposes ofancient astronomy: astrology, navigation, calendar regulation, and (not least) the understanding of our place and role in the universe. Skies are recreated to display critical events as they would have appeared to ancientobserversevents such as the supernova of 1054 A.D., the lion horoscope, and the Star of Bethlehem. Explori ng Ancient Skies provides a comprehensive overview of the relationships between astronomy and other areas of humaninvestigation. It will be useful as a reference for scholars and as a text for students in both astronomy and archaeology, and will be of com pelling interest to readers who seek a broad understanding of our collective intellectualhistory

Title:The Power of Stars [electronic resource] How Celestial Observations Have Shaped Civilization
Author(s): Bryan E Penprase
Date:2011
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:What are some of the connections that bind us to the stars? How have these connections been established? And how have people all around the world and throughout time reacted to the night sky, the sun and moon, in their poetry, mythology, rituals, and temples? This book explores the influence of the sky on both ancient and modern civilization, by providing a clear overview of the many ways in which humans have used the stars as an ordering principle in theircultures, and which today still inspire us in tellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The book explores constellation lore from around the world, celestial alignments of monuments and temples, both from ancient and moderncivilizations, and the role the sky has played in the cultures of the Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, Native American, Chinese, Mayan, Aztec, and Inca. Models of the universe from each of these cultures are described clearly, and eachcultures explanation of the stars, planets, and other celestial objects are described. The roots of astronomy and astrology are presented with original imagery and reproductions of ancient manuscripts that portray the structure ofthe physical universe as conceived by a diverse array of human cultures over the centuries. Our own scientific Big Bang cosmo logy and the origin of stars and elements are discussed in a philosophical context, to explore how we asmodern people learn about the Universe, and incorporate the findings of science into our world views. A concluding chapter provides a summary of modern science's effort to unlock the celestial secrets from the sky and from pastcivilizations, and what these answers mean for us today

Title:Mysteries and Discoveries of Archaeoastronomy [electronic resource] : From Giza to Easter Island
Author(s): Giulio Magli
Date:2009
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This complete, authoritative study of the growing discipline of archaeoastronomy examines the role of astronomy in antiquity. Professor Guilio Magli provides a clear, up-to-date survey of current thinking on the motives of theancients for building fa bulous and mysterious monuments all over our planet. Was it an attempt to reproduce the sky on Earth? To bring down the power of the stars to where they could see it, worship it, and use it? The connectingthread is astronomy. Magli uses astronomy as a key to understanding our ancestors way of thinking. It is a challenge he likes to call predicting the past. The motives of the ancients have often been misconstrued, maligned, oreven dismissed. Magli shows the limitations of orthodox archaeology in relation to astronomically based artifacts and tries to understand what led the ancients to construct such magnificent structures as the city of Teotihuacan in theMexico Valley, the Ceremonial Center of Chaco Canyon in the United States, the Avebury stone circle i n Great Britain, and the great pyramids in Egypt. In this book, the reader is taken on a world tour of many wonderful andenigmatic places on almost every continent, in search of traces of astronomical knowledge and lore of the sky. Then, the author discus ses the fundamental ideas that he believes led to the construction of the giant monuments. Finally,Magli revisits one place in greater detail Giza in an attempt to provide proof for his ideas on the mindset of ancient cultures. This fascinating book wil l take you places in time you have never been, and stimulate yourimagination in regards to other people and other cultures. The result will be a better understanding of who we are and where we come from

Title:A Remarkable Collection of Babylonian Mathematical Texts [electronic resource] Manuscripts in the Schyen Collection Cuneiform Texts I
Author(s): Jran Friberg
Date:2007
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This new text from Jran Friberg, the leading expert on Babylonian mathematics, presents 130 previously unpublished mathematical clay tablets from the Norwegian Schyen collection, and provides a synthesis of the author's mostimportant work. Through a close study of these tablets, Friberg has made numerous amazing discoveries, including the first known examples of pre-Classical labyrinths and mazes, a new understanding of the famous table text Plimpton 322,and new evidence of Babylonian familiarity wit h sophisticated mathematical ideas and objects, such as the three-dimensional Pythagorean equation and the icosahedron. In order to make the text accessible to the largest possibleaudience, the author has included an introductory chapter entitled, How to get a better understanding of mathematical cuneiform texts. Throughout the text he avoids anachronisms and makes every effort to teach the reader to do thesame. The approach in this book is inherently pedagogical, as Friberg illustrates all the steps of t he process of interpretation and clearly explains the mathematical ideas, including terminology, metrological systems, and methods ofcalculation. Drawings and color photos of a large selection of tablets are also included. Particularly beautiful hand copi es of the most complicated texts were made by Farouk Al-Rawi, professor of Ancient Languages and Archaeology atBaghdad University. While the book is reader-friendly, it remains as detailed and exhaustive as possible. It is the most comprehensive treatment of a set of Babylonian mathematical texts ever published and will open up this subject toa new generation of students, mathematicians, and historians of science. Jran Friberg is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Chalmers University of Technology, Swed en. He has recently published the book Unexpected Links BetweenEgyptian and Babylonian Mathematics (World Scientific 2005), and its sequel Amazing Traces of a Babylonian Origin in Greek Mathemat

Title:Exploring Ancient Skies [electronic resource] : An Encyclopedic Survey of Archaeoastronomy
Author(s): David H Kelley
Eugene F Milone
Date:2005
Skies are recreated to display critical events as they would have appeared to ancient observers -events such as the supernova of 1054, the 'lion horoscope' or the 'Star of Bethlehem.' Explori ng Ancient Skies provides a comprehensive overview of the relationships between astronomy and other areas of human investigation. It will beuseful as a reference for scholars and students in both astronomy and archaeology, and will be of compelling intere st to readers who seek a broad understanding of our collective intellectual history
