Note:This book provides a molecular view of membrane transport by means of numerous biochemical and biophysical techniques. The rapidly growing number of atomic structures of transporters in different conformations and the constantprogress in bioinformati cs have recently added deeper insights. The unifying mechanism of energized solute transport across membranes is assumed to consist of the conformational cycling of a carrier protein to provide access tosubstrate binding sites from either side of a cellu lar membrane. Due to the central role of active membrane transport there is considerable interest in deciphering the principles of one of the most fundamental processes in nature: thealternating access mechanism. This book brings together particularly si gnificant structure-function studies on a variety of carrier systems from different transporter families: Glutamate symporters, LeuT-like fold transporters, MFStransporters and SMR (RND) exporters, as well as ABC-type importers. The selected examples imp ressively demonstrate how the combination of functional analysis, crystallography, investigation of dynamics and computational studies hasmade it possible to create a conclusive picture, or, more precisely, a molecular movie. Note:This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Note:The application of molecules in technological devices hinges on the proper understanding of their behavior on metallic electrodes or substrates. The intrinsic molecular electronic and magnetic properties are modified at a metallicinterface, and great ly depend on the atomic configuration of the molecule-metal bond. This poses certain problems, such as the lack of reproducibility in the transport properties of molecular junctions, but also offers the possibilityto induce new charge and spin configurati ons that are only present at the interface. The results presented in this thesis address this issue, providing a comprehensive overview of the influence of molecule-metal and molecule-moleculeinteractions on the electronic and magnetic properties of molec ules adsorbed on metallic substrates. Using metal-phthalocyanines (MePc), a commonly used metal-organic complex as a model system, each chapter explores different aspectsof the interaction with silver surfaces: the local adsorption geometry, self-assembly , the modifications of the electronic and magnetic characteristics due to hybridization and charge transfer, and finally the manipulation of molecularcharge and spin states by electron doping using alkali atoms moved with the STM tip

Note:This thesis presents the theory of three key elements of optical spectroscopy of the electronic excitations in bilayer graphene: angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), visible range Raman spectroscopy, and far-infrared(FIR) magneto-spectr oscopy. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is an atomic two-dimensional crystal consisting of two honeycomb monolayers of carbon, arranged according to Bernal stacking. The unperturbed BLG has a unique band structure, whichfeatures chiral states of electrons with a c haracteristic Berry phase of 2$\pi$, and it has versatile properties which can be controlled by an externally applied transverse electric field and strain. It is shown in this work how ARPESof BLG can be used to obtain direct information about the chirali ty of electron states in the crystal. The author goes on to describe the influence of the interlayer asymmetry, which opens a gap in BLG, on ARPES and on FIR spectra in astrong magnetic field. Finally, he presents a comprehensive theory of inelastic Raman scattering resulting in the electron-hole excitations in bilayer graphene, at zero and quantizing magnetic fields. This predicts their polarizationproperties and peculiar selection rules in terms of the inter-Landau-level transitions

Note:Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Additionally, this book presents the photoelectron angulardistribution of aligned molecules ionized by the HHG light

Note:Global warming, shortage of low-cost oil resources and the increasing demand for energy are currently controlling the world's economic expansion while often opposing desires for sustainable and peaceful development. In thiscontext, atomic energy sati sfactorily fulfills the criteria of low carbon gas production and high overall yield. However, in the absence of industrial fast-breeders the use of nuclear fuel is not optimal, and the production of highactivity waste materials is at a maximum. These are the principal reasons for the development of a new, fourth generation of nuclear reactors, minimizing the undesirable side-effects of current nuclear energy production technologywhile increasing yields by increasing operation temperatures and opening the way for the industrial production of hydrogen through the decomposition of water. The construction and use of such reactors is hindered by several factors,including performance limitations of known structural materials, particularly if the life of the pr ojected systems had to extend over the periods necessary to achieve low costs (at least 60 years). This book collects lectures andseminars presented at the homonymous NATO ASI held in autumn 2007 at the Institut dEtudes Scientifiques in Cargse, France. Th e adopted approach aims at improving and coordinating basic knowledge in materials science andengineering with specific areas of condensed matter physics, the physics of particle/matter interaction and of radiation damage. It is our belief that this metho dology is crucially conditioning the development and the industrialproduction of new structural materials capable of coping with the requirements of these future reactors
