Author(s): Sergio Musazzi
Umberto Perini
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book deals with the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a widely used atomic emission spectroscopy technique for elemental analysis of materials. It is based on the use of a high-power, short pulse laser excitation. The book is divided i nto two main sections: the first one concerning theoretical aspects of the technique, the second one describing the state of the art in applications of the technique in different scientific/technological areas.Numerous examples of state of the art applica tions provide the readers an almost complete scenario of the LIBS technique. The LIBS theoretical aspects are reviewed. The book helps the readers who are less familiar with the technique tounderstand the basic principles. Numerous examples of state of th e art applications give an almost complete scenario of the LIBS technique potentiality. These examples of applications may have a strong impact on future industrialutilization. The authors made important contributions to the development of this field

Title:Stochastic Foundations in Movement Ecology [electronic resource] : Anomalous Diffusion, Front Propagation and Random Searches
Author(s): Vicen Mndez
Daniel Campos
Frederic Bartumeus
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book presents the fundamental theory for non-standard diffusion problems in movement ecology. Lvy processes and anomalous diffusion have shown to be both powerful and useful tools for qualitatively and quantitativelydescribing a wide variety of spatial population ecological phenomena and dynamics, such as invasion fronts and search strategies. Adopting a self-contained, textbook-style approach, the authors provide the elements of statisticalphysics and stochastic processes on which the modeling of movement ecology is based and systematically introduce the physical characterization of ecological processes at the microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic levels. The explicitdefinition of these levels and their interrelations is particularly suitable to coping with the broad spectrum of space and time scales involved in bio-ecological problems. Including numerous exercises (with solutions), this text isaimed at graduate students and newcomers in this field at the interface of theoretical ecology, ma thematical biology and physics

It is intended for seniors andmasters-level graduate stude nts in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers working in mechanics, biomechanics, and other fields where the mechanical response of soft solids isrelevant. Soft Solids: A Primer to the Theoretica l Mechanics of Materials is divided into two parts. Part I introduces the basic concepts needed to give both Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions of the mechanical response of softsolids. Part II presents two distinct theories of elasticity and their asso ciated theories of viscoelasticity. Seven boundary-value problems are studied over the course of the book, each pertaining to an experiment used to characterizematerials. These problems are discussed at the end of each chapter, giving students the opportu nity to apply what they learned in the current chapter and to build upon the material in prior chapters

Author(s): Vitaly Volpert
Date:2014
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:If we had to formulate in one sentence what this book is about it might be How partial differential equations can help to understand heat explosion, tumor growth or evolution of biological species. These and many otherapplications are described by re action-diffusion equations. The theory of reaction-diffusion equations appeared in the first half of the last century. In the present time, it is widely used in population dynamics, chemical physics, biomedical modelling. The purpose of this book is to pre sent the mathematical theory of reaction-diffusion equations in the context of their numerous applications. We will go from the general mathematical theory to specific equationsand then to their applications. Mathematical anaylsis of reaction-diffusion eq uations will be based on the theory of Fredholm operators presented in the first volume. Existence, stability and bifurcations of solutions will be studiedfor bounded domains and in the case of travelling waves. The classical theory of reaction-diffusion equations and new topics such as nonlocal equations and multi-scale models in biology will be considered

Morteza Mahmoudi

Note:In recent years, the fabrication of nanomaterials and exploration of their properties have attracted the attention of various scientific disciplines such as biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Although nanoparticulatesystems are of signific ant interest in various scientific and technological areas, there is little known about the safety of these nanoscale objects. It has now been established that the surfaces of nanoparticles are immediatelycovered by biomolecules (e.g. proteins, ions, and enzymes) upon their entrance into a biological medium. This interaction with the biological medium modulates the surface of the nanoparticles, conferring a biological identity totheir surfaces (referred to as a corona), which determines the subsequent cel lular/tissue responses. The new interface between the nanoparticles and the biological medium/proteins, called bio-nano interface, has been veryrarely studied in detail to date, though the interest in this topic is rapidly growing. In this book, the impor tance of the physiochemical characteristics of nanoparticles for the properties of the protein corona is discussed indetail, followed by comprehensive descriptions of the methods for assessing the protein-nanoparticle interactions. The advantages and limi tations of available corona evaluation methods (e.g. spectroscopy methods, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, and differential centrifugal sedimentation) are examined in detail, followed by a discussi on of the possibilities for enhancing the current methods and a call fornew techniques. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of protein-nanoparticle interaction phenomena are explored and discussed, with a focus on the biological impacts

Title:Exciting Interdisciplinary Physics [electronic resource] : Quarks and Gluons / Atomic Nuclei / Relativity and Cosmology / Biological Systems
Author(s): Walter Greiner
Date:2013
Publisher:Heidelberg : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Nuclear physics is an exciting, broadly faceted field. It spans a wide range of topics, reaching from nuclear structure physics to high-energy physics, astrophysics and medical physics (heavy ion tumor therapy). New developmentsare presented in this volume and the status of research is reviewed. A major focus is put on nuclear structure physics, dealing with superheavy elements and with various forms of exotic nuclei: strange nuclei, very neutron rich nuclei, nuclei of antimatter. Also quantum electro dynamics of strong fields is addressed, which is linked to the occurrence of giant nuclear systems in, e.g., U+U collisions. At high energies nuclear physics joins with elementary particlephysics. Various chapters address the theory of elementary matter a t high densities and temperature, in particular the quark gluon plasma which is predicted by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to occur in high-energy heavy ion collisions. In the field of nuclear astrophysics, the properties of neutron stars and quark stars ar e discussed. A topic which transcends nuclear physics is discussed in two chapters: The proposed pseudocomplex extension of Einstein's GeneralRelativity leads to the prediction that there are no black holes and that big bang cosmology has to be revised. F inally, the interdisciplinary nature of this volume is further accentuated by chapters on protein folding and onmagnetoreception in birds and many other animals
