Title:Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics [electronic resource]
Author(s): P.G Tucker
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrids is a vibrant research area. This book runs through all the potential unsteady modelling fidelity ranges, from low-order to LES. The latter is probably the highest fidelity forpractical aerospace sy stems modelling. Cutting edge new frontiers are defined. One example of a pressing environmental concern is noise. For the accurate prediction of this, unsteady modelling is needed. Hence computationalaeroacoustics is explored. It is also emerging that th ere is a critical need for coupled simulations. Hence, this area is also considered and the tensions of utilizing such simulations with the already expensive LES. This work hasrelevance to the general field of CFD and LES and to a wide variety of non-aero space aerodynamic systems (e.g. cars, submarines, ships, electronics, buildings). Topics treated include unsteady flow techniques LES and hybrids generalnumerical methods computational aeroacoustics computational aeroelasticity coupled simulations and tur bulence and its modelling (LES, RANS, transition, VLES, URANS). The volume concludes by pointing forward to future horizons and inparticular the industrial use of LES. The writing style is accessible and useful to both academics and industrial practitione rs. From the reviews: Tucker's volume provides a very welcome, concise discussion of current capabilitiesfor simulating and modellng unsteady aerodynamic flows. It covers the various possible numerical techniques in good, clear detail and presents a very wide range of practical applications beautifully illustrated in many cases. Thisbook thus provides a valuable text for practicing engineers, a rich source of background information for students and those new to this area of Research & Development, and an excellent state-of-the-art review for others. Author(s): Stefan Witzel
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Providing an accessible approach to a special case of the Rank Theorem, the present text considers the exact finiteness properties of S-arithmetic subgroups of split reductive groups in positive characteristic when S contains onlytwo places. While th e proof of the general Rank Theorem uses an involved reduction theory due to Harder, by imposing the restrictions that the group is split and that S has only two places, one can instead make use of the theory oftwin buildings

Note:This book provides the reader with essential tools needed to analyze complex societal issues and demonstrates the transition from physics to modern-day laws and treaties. This second edition features new equation-orientedmaterial and extensive data s ets drawing upon current information from experts in their fields. Problems to challenge the reader and extend discussion are presented on three timely issues: National Security:Weapons, Offense, Defense, Verification, Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism Environment: Air/Water, Nuclear, Climate Change, EM Fields/Epidemiology Energy: Current Energy Situation, Buildings, SolarBuildings, Renewable Energy, Enhanced End-Use Efficiency, Transportation, Economics Praise for the first edition: This insight is n eeded in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wideWashington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book. RichardScribner, first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simpl e back-of-the-envelope calculations. He alsoprovides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interes t a new generation ofphysicists in continuing this work. Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP Energy policy must be quantitative. Title:Diagram Geometry [electronic resource] : Related to Classical Groups and Buildings

Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book provides a self-contained introduction to diagram geometry. Tight connections with group theory are shown. It treats thin geometries (related to Coxeter groups) and thick buildings from a diagrammatic perspective.Projective and affine geome try are main examples. Polar geometry is motivated by polarities on diagram geometries and the complete classification of those polar geometries whose projective planes are Desarguesian is given. It differsfrom Tits' comprehensive treatment in that it use s Veldkamp's embeddings. The book intends to be a basic reference for those who study diagram geometry. Group theorists will find examples of the use of diagram geometry. Light onmatroid theory is shed from the point of view of geometry with linear diagra ms. Those interested in Coxeter groups and those interested in buildings will find brief but self-contained introductions into these topics from thediagrammatic perspective. Graph theorists will find many highly regular graphs. The text is written so grad uate students will be able to follow the arguments without needing recourse to further literature. A strong point of the bookis the density of examples.

Title:Aeroelasticity [electronic resource] : The Continuum Theory
Author(s): AV Balakrishnan
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The author's approach is one of continuum models of the aerodynamic flow interacting with a flexible structure whose behavior is governed by partial differential equations. Both linear and nonlinear models are considered althoughmuch of the book is c oncerned with the former while keeping the latter clearly in view. A complete chapter is also devoted to nonlinear theory. The author has provided new insights into the classical inviscid aerodynamics and raisesnovel and interesting questions on fundament al issues that have too often been neglected or forgotten in the development of the early history of the subject. The author contrasts his approach with discrete models for the unsteadyaerodynamic flow and the finite element model for the structure. Much of the aeroelasticity has been developed with applications formerly inmind because of its enormous consequences for the safety of aircraft. Aeroelasticinstabilities such as divergence and flutter and aeroelastic responses to gusts can pose a significant h azard to the aircraft and impact its performance. Yet, it is now recognized that there are many other physical phenomena that havesimilar characteristics ranging from flows around flexible tall buildings and long span bridges, alternate energy sources suc h as electric power generation by smart structures to flows internal to the human body. From the foreword:For the theorist and applied mathematician who wishes an introduction to this fascinating subject as well as for the experienced aeroelastician who i s open to new challenges and a fresh viewpoint, this book and its author have muchto offer the reader. Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Incidence geometry is a central part of modern mathematicsthat has an impressive tradition. The main topics of incidence geometry are projective and affine geometry and, in more recent times, the theory of buildings and polarspaces. Embedded into the modern view of diagram geometry, projective and affine geometry including the fundamental theorems, polar geometry including the Theorem of Buekenhout-Shult and the classification of quadratic sets arepresented in this volume. Incidence geometry is devel oped along the lines of the fascinating work of Jacques Tits and Francis Buekenhout. The book is a clear and comprehensible introduction into a wonderful piece of mathematics. Morethan 200 figures make even complicated proofs accessible to the reader

Title:Points and Lines [electronic resource] : Characterizing the Classical Geometries
Author(s): Ernest Shult
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The classical geometries of points and lines include not only the projective and polar spaces, but similar truncations of geometries naturally arising from the groups of Lie type. Virtually all of these geometries (or homomorphicimages of them) are c haracterized in this book by simple local axioms on points and lines. Simple point-line characterizations of Lie incidence geometries allow one to recognize Lie incidence geometries and their automorphism groups. These tools could be useful in shortening t he enormously lengthy classification of finite simple groups. Similarly, recognizing ruled manifolds by axioms on light trajectories offers a way for a physicist to recognize the action of aLie group in a context where it is not clear what Hamiltonians or Casimir operators are involved. The presentation is self-contained in the sense that proofs proceed step-by-step from elementary first principals without further appealto outside results. Several chapters have new heretofore unpublished research results. On the other hand, certain groups of chapters would make good graduate courses. All but one chapter provide exercises for either use in such acourse, or to elicit new research directions

Note:We grasp and transform the world through interplays of quantification and qualification. The cross pollination of geometric and literary figures is deeply embedded in our cognitive habits, instruments of inquiry and theconstructed environment. Throug h time, thought has reflected on the visible processes and products of material craft to explain and train the invisible workings of the mind. Recursively, material craft embodies a tradition of splittingideas into categorical parts and compositional unit s for reassembly. Although the mathematical and verbal arts are often placed in contrast, human inventions manifest a weave of alphanumerics. Mythic parables, geometric proofs, memoryarts, poems, algorithms, buildings and cities emerge from the intercours e of measure and explication. Note:The title of this issue of the Nexus Network Journal, Architecture, Mathematics and Structure, is deliberately ambiguous. At first glance, it might seem to indicate the relationship between what buildings look like and howthey stand up. This is indee d one aspect of what we are concerned with here. But on a deeper level, the fundamental concept of structure is what connects architecture to mathematics. Both architecture and mathematics are highlystructured formal systems expressed through a symbolic l anguage. For architecture, the generating structure might be geometrical, musical, modular, or fractal. Once we understand the nature of the structure underlying the design, weare able to read the meaning inherent in the architectural forms. The papers in this issue all explore themes of structure in different ways

Title:Mysteries and Discoveries of Archaeoastronomy [electronic resource] : From Giza to Easter Island
Author(s): Giulio Magli
Date:2009
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This complete, authoritative study of the growing discipline of archaeoastronomy examines the role of astronomy in antiquity. Professor Guilio Magli provides a clear, up-to-date survey of current thinking on the motives of theancients for building fa bulous and mysterious monuments all over our planet. Was it an attempt to reproduce the sky on Earth? To bring down the power of the stars to where they could see it, worship it, and use it? The connectingthread is astronomy. Magli uses astronomy as a key to understanding our ancestors way of thinking. It is a challenge he likes to call predicting the past. The motives of the ancients have often been misconstrued, maligned, oreven dismissed. Magli shows the limitations of orthodox archaeology in relation to astronomically based artifacts and tries to understand what led the ancients to construct such magnificent structures as the city of Teotihuacan in theMexico Valley, the Ceremonial Center of Chaco Canyon in the United States, the Avebury stone circle i n Great Britain, and the great pyramids in Egypt. In this book, the reader is taken on a world tour of many wonderful andenigmatic places on almost every continent, in search of traces of astronomical knowledge and lore of the sky. Then, the author discus ses the fundamental ideas that he believes led to the construction of the giant monuments. Finally,Magli revisits one place in greater detail Giza in an attempt to provide proof for his ideas on the mindset of ancient cultures. This fascinating book wil l take you places in time you have never been, and stimulate yourimagination in regards to other people and other cultures. The result will be a better understanding of who we are and where we come from

Note:Effective evacuation of people from closed spaces is an extremely important topic, since it can save real lives in emergency situations that can be brought about by natural and human made disasters. Usually there are static mapsposted at various plac es at buildings that illustrate routes that should be taken during emergencies. However, when disasters happen, some of these routes might not be valid because of structural problems due to the disaster itself andmore importantly because of the distributi on of congestion of people spread over the area. The average flow of traffic depends on the traffic density. Therefore, if all the people follow the same route, or follow a route withoutknowing the congestion situation, they can end up being part of the c ongestion which results in very low flow rate or worse a traffic jam. Hence it becomes extremely important to design evacuations that inform people how fast and inwhich direction to move based on real-time information obtained about the people distributio n using various sensors. The sensors used can include cameras, infra red sensors etc., and the technology used to inform people about thedesired movement can be communicated using light matrix, small speakers, and in the future using wireless PDAs. This b ook provides mathematical models of pedestrian movements that can be used specifically for designing feedback controllaws for effective evacuation. The book also provides various feedback control laws to accomplish the effective evacuation. The book uses the hydrodynamic hyperbolic PDE macroscopic pedestrian models since they are amenable to feedbackcontrol design. The control designs are obtained through different nonlinear techniques including Lyapunov functional techniques, feedback linearization in th e distributed model, and some discretized techniques

Note:Auralization is the technique of creation and reproduction of sound on the basis of computer data. With this tool is it possible to predict the character of sound signals which are generated at the source and modified byreinforcement, propagation and transmission in systems such as rooms, buildings, vehicles or other technical devices. This book is organized as a comprehensive collection of the basics of sound and vibration, acoustic modelling, simulation, signal processing and audio reproduction. Imp lementations of the auralization technique are described using examples drawn from various fields in acoustics research and engineering, architecture, sound design and virtualreality

Title:Buildings [electronic resource] : Theory and Applications
Author(s): Peter Abramenko
Kenneth S Brown
Date:2008
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book treats Jacques Tits's beautiful theory of buildings, making that theory accessible to readers with minimal background. It includes all the material of the earlier book Buildings by the second-named author, published bySpringer-Verlag in 198 9, which gave an introduction to buildings from the classical (simplicial) point of view. This new book also includes two other approaches to buildings, which nicely complement the simplicial approach: On the onehand, buildings may be viewed as abstract s ets of chambers with a Weyl-group-valued distance function this point of view has become increasingly important in the theory and applications of buildings. On the other hand, buildings maybe viewed as metric spaces. Beginners can still use parts of the n ew book as a friendly introduction to buildings, but the book also contains valuable material for the active researcher. There are several paths through the book, sothat readers may choose to concentrate on one particular approach. The pace is gentle in t he elementary parts of the book, and the style is friendly throughout. All concepts are well motivated. There are thorough treatments of advancedtopics such as the Moufang property, with arguments that are much more detailed than those that have previousl y appeared in the literature. This book is suitable as a textbook, with many exercises, and it may also be used forself-study

Title:Theory of Association Schemes [electronic resource]
Author(s): Paul-Hermann Zieschang
Date:2005
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Theory of Association Schemes is the first concept-oriented treatment of the structure theory of association schemes. It contains several recent results which appear for the first time in book form. The generalization ofSylows group theoretic theorem s to scheme theory arises as a consequence of arithmetical considerations about quotient schemes. The theory of Coxeter schemes (equivalent to the theory of buildings) emerges naturally and yields apurely algebraic proof of Tits main theorem on buildings of spherical type. Also a scheme-theoretic characterization of Glaubermans Z*-involutions is included. The text is self-contained and accessible for advanced undergraduatestudents
