Title:Systems Engineering, Systems Thinking, and Learning [electronic resource] : A Case Study in Space Industry
Author(s): Hubert Anton Moser
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book focuses on systems engineering, systems thinking, and how that thinking can be learned in practice. It describes a novel analytical framework based on activity theory for understanding how systems thinking evolves andhow it can be improved to support multidisciplinary teamwork in the context of system development and systems engineering. This method, developed using data collected over four years from three different small space systems engineeringorganizations, can be applied in a wide var iety of work activities in the context of engineering design and beyond in order to monitor and analyze multidisciplinary interactions in working teams over time. In addition, the bookpresents a practical strategy called WAVES (Work Activity for a Evoluti on of Systems engineering and thinking), which fosters the practical learning of systems thinking with the aim of improving process development in differentindustries. The book offers an excellent resource for researchers and practitioners interested in s ystems thinking and in solutions to support its evolution. Beyond its contribution to a better understanding of systems engineering, systems thinking and how it can be learned in real-world contexts, it also introduce a suitable analysis framework that hel ps to bridge the gap between the latest social science research and engineering research.

Title:Exploratory Data Analysis in Business and Economics [electronic resource] : An Introduction Using SPSS, Stata, and Excel
Author(s): Thomas Cleff
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In a world in which we are constantly surrounded by data, figures, and statistics, it is imperative to understand and to be able to use quantitative methods. Statistical models and methods are among the most important tools ineconomic analysis, decis ion-making and business planning. This textbook, Exploratory Data Analysis in Business and Economics, aims to familiarise students of economics and business as well as practitioners in firms with the basicprinciples, techniques, and applications of descri ptive statistics and data analysis. Drawing on practical examples from business settings, it demonstrates the basic descriptive methods of univariate and bivariate analysis. Thetextbook covers a range of subject matter, from data collection and scaling to the presentation and univariate analysis of quantitative data, and also includes analytic procedures for assessing bivariate relationships. It does notconfine itself to presenting descriptive statistics, but also addresses the use of computer programmes such as Excel, SPSS, and STATA, thus treating all of the topics typically covered in a university course on descriptive statistics. The German edition of this textbook is one of the bestsellers on the German market for literature in statistics

Title:Complexity, Cognition and the City [electronic resource]
Author(s): Juval Portugali
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Complexity, Cognition and the City aims at a deeper understanding of urbanism, while invoking, on an equal footing, the contributions both the hard and soft sciences have made, and are still making, when grappling with the manyissues and facets of re gional planning and dynamics. In this work, the author goes beyond merely seeing the city as a self-organized, emerging pattern of some collective interaction between many stylized urban agents he makesthe crucial step of attributing cognition to his age nts and thus raises, for the first time, the question on how to deal with a complex system composed of many interacting complex agents in clearly defined settings. Accordingly, theauthor eventually addresses issues of practical relevance for urban planner s and decision makers. The book unfolds its message in a largely nontechnical manner, so as to provide a broad interdisciplinary readership with insights, ideas, and other stimuli to encourage further research with the twofold aim of further pushing back the boundaries of complexity science and emphasizing the all-important interrelation of hard and soft sciences in recognizing thecognitive sciences as another necessary ingredient for meaningful urban studies

Title:Planning and Scheduling in Manufacturing and Services [electronic resource]
Author(s): Michael L Pinedo
Date:2009
Edition:2
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This second edition book focuses on planning and scheduling applications with a new chapter on planning and scheduling in health care. Planning and scheduling are forms of decision-making that play an important role in mostmanufacturing and services industries. The planning and scheduling functions in a company typically use analytical techniques and heuristic methods to allocate its limited resources to the activities that have to be done. Theapplication areas considered in this book are divided int o manufacturing applications and services applications. The book covers four areas in planning and scheduling: preliminary scheduling, planning and scheduling in manufacturing, planning and scheduling in services and systems development and implementation. It covers four areas in services: reservations and timetabling, tournament scheduling, planning and scheduling in transportation, planning and sheduling inhealthcare and workforce scheduling. At the end of each chapter, a case study or a system implementa tion is described in detail. Numerous examples and exercises throughout the book illustrate the material presented. The fundamentalsconcerning the methodologies used in the application chapters are covered in the appendices. This book is suitable for more advanced students in industrial engineering and operations research as well as graduate students in business.Michael Pinedo is the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management in the Stern School of Business at New York University. His research interests lie in the theoretical and applied aspects of planning and scheduling. He haswritten numerous papers on the theory of deterministic and stochastic scheduling and has also consulted extensively in industry. He has been actively involved in the de velopment of several large industrial planning and schedulingsystems. The book may be very useful as an application guideline for practicioners from the manufacturing and services sectors, while it has

Title:Benchmarking, Temporal Distribution, and Reconciliation Methods for Time Series [electronic resource]

Pierre A Cholette
Date:2006
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource

Note:In modern economies, time series play a crucial role at all levels of activity. They are used by decision makers to plan for a better future, by governments to promote prosperity, by central banks to control inflation, by unionsto bargain for higher wages, by hospital, school boards, manufacturers, builders, transportation companies, and by consumers in general. A common misconception is that time series data originate from the direct and straightforwardcompilations of survey data, censuses, and admi nistrative records. On the contrary, before publication time series are subject to statistical adjustments intended to facilitate analysis, increase efficiency, reduce bias, replacemissing values, correct errors, and satisfy cross-sectional additivity con straints. Some of the most common adjustments are benchmarking, interpolation, temporal distribution, calendarization, and reconciliation. This book discussesthe statistical methods most often applied for such adjustments, ranging from ad hoc procedures t o regression-based models. The latter are emphasized, because of their clarity, ease of application, and superior results. Each topic isillustrated with many real case examples. In order to facilitate understanding of their properties and limitations of t he methods discussed, a real data example, the Canada Total Retail Trade Series, is followed throughout the book. This book brings together the scattered literature on these topics and presents them using a consistent notation and a unifying view. The book will promote better procedures by large producers of time series, e.g. statistical agenciesand central banks. Furthermore, knowing what adjustments are made to the data and what technique is used and how they affect the trend, the business cycles and sea sonality of the series, will enable users to perform better modeling, prediction, analysis and planning. This book will prove useful to graduate students and final year undergraduate students of time ser

Title:Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming [electronic resource]
Author(s): Yves Pochet
Laurence A Wolsey
Date:2006
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and related supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programmi ng (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses the solution of real life or industrialproduction planning problems (involving comple x production structures with multiple production stages) using a MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on close to twenty years of research in which the authors have played asignificant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-ex pert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. Toachieve this the book provides a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating the m into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach isdemonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Graduate students and re searchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understandingof the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in thedecomposition of more complicated problems. This book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models and produce state-of-the-art models a nd algorithms

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book focuses on planning and scheduling applications. Planning and scheduling are forms of decision-making that play an important role in most manufacturing and services industries. The planning and scheduling functions in acompany typically use analytical techniques and heuristic methods to allocate its limited resources to the activities that have to be done. The application areas considered in this book are divided into manufacturing applications andservices applications. The book covers five areas in manufacturing: project scheduling, job shop scheduling, scheduling of flexible assembly systems, economic lot scheduling, and planning and scheduling in supply chains. It covers fourareas in services: reservations and timetabling, tournament sch eduling, planning and scheduling in transportation, and workforce scheduling. At the end of each chapter, a case study or a system implementation is described in detail.Numerous examples and exercises throughout the book illustrate the material presented. The fundamentals concerning the methodologies used in the application chapters are covered in the appendices. This book is suitable for moreadvanced students in industrial engineering and operations research as well as graduate students in business. Mich ael Pinedo is the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management in the Stern School of Business at New YorkUniversity. His research interests lie in the theoretical and applied aspects of planning and scheduling. He has written numerous papers on the theory of deterministic and stochastic scheduling and has also consulted extensively inindustry.
