Jeffrey S Morris
Leonard A Stefanski
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume contains Raymond J. Carroll's research and commentary on its impact by leading statisticians. Each of the seven main parts focuses on a key research area: Measurement Error, Transformation and Weighting, Epidemiology,Nonparametric and Sem iparametric Regression for Independent Data, Nonparametric and Semiparametric Regression for Dependent Data, Robustness, and other work. The seven subject areas reviewed in this book were chosen by Ray himself, aswere the articles representing each area. The commentaries not only review Rays work, but are also filled with history and anecdotes. Raymond J. Carrolls impact on statistics and numerous other fields of science is far-reaching.His vast catalog of work spans from fundamental contributions to stat istical theory to innovative methodological development and new insights in disciplinary science. From the outset of his career, rather than taking the saferoute of pursuing incremental advances, Ray has focused on tackling the most important challenges. In doing so, it is fair to say that he has defined a host of statistics areas, including weighting and transformation in regression, measurement error modeling, quantitative methods for nutritional epidemiology and non- and semiparametric regression

Title:The Mathematics of Frobenius in Context [electronic resource] A Journey Through 18th to 20th Century Mathematics
Author(s): Thomas Hawkins
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Frobenius is best known as creator of the theory of group characters and representations, but his name is attached to a multitude of theorems and concepts from a broad spectrum of mathematical disciplines. In this book hismathematicsis presented in c ontext in two senses. The first provides the reader with the historical background necessary to understand why Frobenius undertook to solve a particular problem and to appreciate the magnitude of hisachievement. Part of the context involves Frobenius trai ning in the Berlin school of mathematics presided over by Weierstrass, Kronecker, and Kummer, from whom he learned disciplinary ideals as well as theorems. Frobeniusmathematics is also presented in context in that the author traces the ways in which his w ork was subsequently applied, developed, and ultimately incorporated into present-day mathematics. As a consequence of the contextualapproach, the reader will encounter a broad swath of diverse and important strands of 18th20th century mathematics, rangin g from the work of Lagrange and Laplace on stability of linear systems of differential equations to the theoryof complex abelian varieties. The book is divided into three parts. Part I provides an overview of Frobenius entire mathematical career and thus serves as an introduction to the main body of the book. Here, within the framework ofhis educational and professional career, his contributions to mathematics and the attendant backgrounds are briefly sketched and their subsequent impact upon the developm ent of mathematics indicated. Part II presents the development ofcore aspects of linear algebra up to and including the work of Weierstrass and Kronecker. The chapters of Part III deal in depth with Frobenius major works and can be read independently of o ne another. Thomas Hawkins was awarded theMAA Chauvenet Prize for expository writing and was the first recipient of the AMS Whiteman Prize for historical exposition. His las

Note:In January 1937, Nobel laureate in Physics Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was recruited to the University of Chicago. He was to remain there for his entire career, becoming Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor ofTheoretical Astrophysics in 1952 and attaining emeritus status in 1985. This is where his then student Ed Spiegel met him during the summer of 1954, attended his lectures on turbulence and jotted down the notes in hand. His lectureshad a twofold purpose: they not only provided a very el ementary introduction to some aspects of the subject for novices, they also allowed Chandra to organize his thoughts in preparation to formulating his attack on the statisticalproblem of homogeneous turbulence. After each lecture Ed Spiegel transcribed th e notes and filled in the details of the derivations that Chandrasekhar had not included, trying to preserve the spirit of his presentation and even addingsome of his side remarks. The lectures were rather impromptu and the notes as presented here are as they were set down originally in 1954. Now they are being made generally available for Chandrasekhars centennial

Title:Ettore Majorana: Unpublished Research Notes on Theoretical Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Salvatore Esposito
Erasmo Recami
Alwyn Merwe
Roberto Battiston
Date:2009
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The editors of this volume bring to life a major part of Ettore Majoranas work that up to now was not accessible to the general audience. These are the contents of the Quaderni (notebooks) of Ettore Majorana, edited andtranslated in English. Ettore M ajorana had an astounding talent for Physics that made an impression on all the colleagues who had the opportunity to know him. Enrico Fermi, who took him in his group when he was a student, ranked himwith Galilei and Newton. Ettore Majoranas career was c ut short in 1938, as he mysteriously disappeared at the age of 32, leaving many unpublished works. This book reveals an interesting perspective over the points of view, theinterests, the approach to physical problems of this great physicist and it shows t hat he had advanced his comprehension of physics to levels that were only reached by other physicists ten years after, or even later. The editors haveinserted minimal text, in order to leave the original calculations by Majorana intact, and at the same ti me help the reader when the formalism had been left unexplained. The preface to this book provides fascinating reflections on thelife and pioneering work of this exceptional physicist, placing it in the context of the physical discoveries of the following years. This book will have considerable interests to all those interested in the development of the historyof Physics. Audience: Theoretical physicists and scholars interested in the history of Physics

Title:MacLaurins Physical Dissertations [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ian Tweddle
Date:2007
Publisher:London : Springer London
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The Scottish mathematician Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746) is best known for developing and extending Newtons work in calculus, geometry and gravitation his 2-volume work Treatise of Fluxions (1742) was the first systematicexposition of Newtons methods. It is well known that MacLaurin was awarded prizes by the Royal Academy of Sciences, Paris, for his earlier work on the collision of bodies (1724) and the tides (1740) however, the contents of theseessays are less familiar although some of the material i s discussed in the Treatise of Fluxions - and the essays themselves often hard to obtain. This book presents these important works in translation for the first time, precededby a translation of MacLaurins MA dissertation on gravity (Glasgow, 1713) which p rovides evidence of his early study of Newtonian principles. In his essentially descriptive discussion of gravity MacLaurin ranges over planetaryorbits, vortices and theology. His discussion of collisions includes a disputatious account of what should be understood by the force of a moving body, a contentious topic at the time. The essay on the tides has the original version ofhis celebrated theorem on the equilibrium of a spheroidal fluid mass and employs a remarkable combination of geometry and calculus to determine forces of attraction. The aim is to make this material more generally accessible toresearchers and students in mathematics and physics, and indeed to anyone with an interest in the historical development of these subjects. A general introduc tion puts the works in context and gives an outline of MacLaurin's career. Each translation is then accompanied by an introduction and a series of notes and appendices in which individual results are analysed, both in modern terms and from a historical poi nt of view. Background material is also provided

Title:The Legacy of Mario Pieri in Geometry and Arithmetic [electronic resource]
Author(s): Elena Anne Marchisotto
James T Smith
Date:2007
Publisher:Boston, MA : Birkhuser Boston
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The Italian mathematician Mario Pieri (1860-1913) played an integral part in the research groups of Corrado Segre and Giuseppe Peano, and thus had a significant, yet somewhat underappreciated impact on several branches ofmathematics, particularly on the development of algebraic geometry and the foundations of mathematics in the years around the turn of the 20th century. This book is the first in a series of three volumes that are dedicated tocountering that neglect and comprehensively examining Pieri s life, mathematical work, and influence in such diverse fields as mathematical logic, algebraic geometry, number theory, inversive geometry, vector analysis, anddifferential geometry. The Legacy of Mario Pieri in Geometry and Arithmetic introduces reader s to Pieris career and his studies in foundations, from both historical and modern viewpoints, placing his life and research in context andtracing his influence on his contemporaries as well as more recent mathematicians. The text also provides a glimpse of the Italian academic world of Pieri's time, and its relationship with the developing international mathematicscommunity. Included in this volume are the first English translations, along with analyses, of two of his most important axiomatizationshis po stulates for arithmetic, which Peano judged superior to his own and his foundation ofelementary geometry on the basis of point and sphere, which Alfred Tarski used as a basis for his own system. Combining an engaging exposition, little-known historical in formation, exhaustive references and an excellent index, thistext will be of interest to graduate students, researchers, and historians with a general knowledge of logic and advanced mathematics, and it requires no specialized experience in mathematical l ogic or the foundations of geometry

Title:ORGANIZATIONS AND STRATEGIES IN ASTRONOMY VOLUME 7 [electronic resource]
Author(s): ANDR HECK
Date:2006
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book is the seventh volume under the title Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy (OSA). The OSA series covers a large range of fields and themes: in practice, one could say that all aspects of astronomy-related life andenvironment are consid ered in the spirit of sharing specific expertise and lessons learned. The chapters of this book are dealing with socio-dynamical aspects of the astronomy (and related space sciences) community: characteristics oforganizations, strategies for development, operational techniques, observing practicalities, journal and magazine profiles, public outreach, publication studies, relationships with the media, research communication, series ofconferences, evaluation and selection procedures, research indicators, na tional specificities, contemporary history, and so on. The experts contributing to this volume have done their best to write in a way understandable to readersnot necessarily hyperspecialized in astronomy while providing specific detailed information and sometimes enlightening lessons learned sections. The book concludes with an updated bibliography of publications related tosocio-astronomy and to the interactions of the astronomy community with the society at large. This volume will be most usefully read by researchers, editors, publishers, librarians, sociologists of science, research planners andstrategists, project managers, public-relations officers, plus those in charge of astronomy-related organizations, as well as by students aiming at a career in astronomy or related space sciences
