Note:This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Note:Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy

Note:This thesis explores the dispersion stability, microstructure and phase transitions involved in the nanoclay system.It describes the recently discovered formation of colloidal gels via two routes: the first is through phaseseparation and second is by equilibrium gelation and includes the first reported experimental observation of a system with high aspect ratio nanodiscs. The phase behavior of anisotropic nanodiscs of different aspect ratio in theirindividual and mixed states in aqueous and hydrophob ic mediais investigated. Distinct phase separation, equilibrium fluid and equilibrium gel phasesare observed in nanoclay dispersions with extensive aging.The work thenexploressolution behavior, gelation kinetics, aging dynamics and temperature-induced ord ering in the individual and mixed states of these discotic colloids. Anisotropic ordering dynamics induced by a water-air interface, waiting time andtemperature in these dispersions were studied in great detail along with aggregation behavior of nanoplate lets in hydrophobic environment of alcohol solutions

Note:The study of fluctuations in statistical physics has a long history, and a general theory is well established, connecting fluctuations to response properties of equilibrium systems. Remarkably, this framework fails as soon as somecurrent is flowing a cross the system, driving it out of equilibrium. The presence of currents is quite common in nature and produces rich phenomena which are far from being included in a general framework. This thesis focuses on thisgeneral problem by studying different mode ls such as granular materials and systems exhibiting anomalous diffusion and shows how the generalized response techniques can be successfully used to catch the relevant degrees of freedom thatdrive the systems out of equilibrium. The first part presents the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics,reviewing its essential features and showing, when pos sible, some applications. The second part of this book deals with how the general theory can be applied to model multiphase flows and, in particular, how to determine theirconstitutive relations. Each chapter contains problems at the end, the solutions of which are given at the end of the book. No prior knowledge of statistical mechanics is required the necessary prerequisites are elements of transportphenomena and on thermodynamics. The style of the book is mathematical, but nonetheless it remains very r eadable and anchored in the physical world rather than becoming too abstract. Though it is up-to-date and includes recentimportant developments, there is a lot of classical material in the book, albeit presented with unprecedented clarity and coherence. T he first six chapters are actually a very good introduction to the theory underlying many phenomenain soft matter physics, beyond the focus on flow and transport of the later chapters of the book. Note:Organic lasers are broadly tunable coherent sources, potentially compact, convenient and manufactured at low-costs. Appeared in the mid 60s as solid-state alternatives for liquid dye lasers, they recently gained a newdimension after the demonstration of organic semiconductor lasers in the 90's. More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, afirst chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state orga nic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power,threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the fi eld is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organicsemiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers

Note:The state-of-the-art in the theoretical statistical physics treatment of the Janus fluid is reported with a bridge between new research results published in journal articles and a contextual literature review. Recent Monte Carlosimulations on the Ker n and Frenkel model of the Janus fluid have revealed that in the vapor phase, below the critical point, there is the formation of preferred inert clusters made up of a well-defined number of particles: themicelles and the vesicles. This is responsible for a re-entrant gas branch of the gas-liquid binodal. Detailed account of this findings are given in the first chapter where the Janus fluid is introduced as a product of newsophisticated synthesis laboratory techniques. In the second chapter a cluster theo ry is developed to approximate the exact clustering properties stemming from the simulations. It is shown that the theory is able to reproducesemi-quantitatively the micellization phenomenon

Note:Fundamental Aspects of Plasma Chemical Physics: Tranpsort develops basic and advanced concepts of plasma transport to the modern treatment of the Chapman-Enskog method for the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Thebook invites the reader t o consider actual problems of the transport of thermal plasmas with particular attention to the derivation of diffusion- and viscosity-type transport cross sections, stressing the role of resonantcharge-exchange processes in affecting the diffusion-type c ollision calculation of viscosity-type collision integrals. A wide range of topics is then discussed including (1) the effect of non-equilibrium vibrational distributions onthe transport of vibrational energy, (2) the role of electronically excited states in the transport properties of thermal plasmas, (3) the dependence of transport properties on the multitude of Saha equations for multi-temperatureplasmas, and (4) the effect of the magnetic field on transport properties. Note:This book is a treatise on the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of thin liquid films at solid surfaces and, in particular, their rupture instabilities. For the quantitative study of these phenomena, polymer thin films havenproven to be an invalua ble experimental model system. What is it that makes thin film instabilities special and interesting, warranting a whole book? There are several answers to this. Firstly, thin polymeric films have an importantrange of applications, and with the increase in the number of technologies available to produce and to study them, this range is likely to expand. An understanding of their instabilities is therefore of practical relevance for thedesign of such films. Secondly, thin liquid films are an interdiscipl inary research topic. Interdisciplinary research is surely not an end to itself, but in this case it leads to a fairly heterogeneous community of theoretical andexperimental physicists, engineers, physical chemists, mathematicians and others working on th e topic. It justifies attempting to write a text which aims at a coherent, theoretical presentation of the field which researchers acrosstheir specialised communities might be interested in. And finally, thin liquid films are an interesting laboratory fo r a theorist to confront a well-established theory, hydrodynamics, with its limits. Liquids at surfaces take noticeof the surface they are placed upon, and this is reflected in their dynamics. And the polymers, when confined to thin films, can imprint mol ecular properties on the film dynamics. The material in the book is arranged in two Parts.Part I covers the basics of wetting and dewetting phenomena, and is of interest to researchers working in the field also outside of polymeric systems. It can be rea d as a brief introduction into the theory of wetting phase transitions.Part II delves exclusively into polymeric thin films, their mathematical description, and the confrontation with experiment

RobertHoyst (1963) is a professor at the Institute of Physical Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences. He specializes in statistical physics, physical chemistry, biologistics and soft matter physics. He has published 182 papers and 2 books.He presented his works at multiple universities/institutes, e.g. Harvard, MIT, University of Chicago, ESPCI-Paris, ENS-Paris, several Max Planck Ins titutes, University of Tokyo, Oxford and Cambridge. He has over 17 yearsexperience in teaching thermodynamics for undergraduate students. Andrzej Poniewierski (1951), professor at the Institute of Physical Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences published 53 papers and two books, specializes in soft matterand statistical physics, liquid crystals and applications of density functional theory to complex fluids.
