Title:Mathematical Models for Poroelastic Flows [electronic resource]
Author(s): Anvarbek Meirmanov
Date:2014
Publisher:Paris : Atlantis Press : Imprint: Atlantis Press
Size:1 online resource
Note:The book is devoted to rigorous derivation of macroscopic mathematical models as a homogenization of exact mathematical models at the microscopic level. The idea is quite natural: one first must describe the joint motion of theelastic skeleton and th e fluid in pores at the microscopic level by means of classical continuum mechanics, and then use homogenization to find appropriate approximation models (homogenized equations). The Navier-Stokes equations stillhold at this scale of the pore size in the order of 5 15 microns. Thus, as we have mentioned above, the macroscopic mathematical models obtained are still within the limits of physical applicability. These mathematical modelsdescribe different physical processes of liquid filtration and acoustics in poroelastic media, such as isothermal or non-isothermal filtration, hydraulic shock, isothermal or non-isothermal acoustics, diffusion-convection, filtrationand acoustics in composite media or in porous fractured reservoirs. Our research is based upon the Nguetseng two-scale convergent method

Title:Symmetries in Fundamental Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Kurt Sundermeyer
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Over the course of the last century it has become clear that both elementary particle physics and relativity theories are based on the notion of symmetries. These symmetries become manifest in that the laws of nature areinvariant under spacetime tran sformations and/or gauge transformations. The consequences of these symmetries were analyzed as early as in 1918 by Emmy Noether on the level of action functionals. Her work did not receive due recognitionfor nearly half a century, but can today be unders tood as a recurring theme in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and special relativity, Yang-Mills type quantum field theories, and in general relativity. As a matter of fact, asshown in this monograph, many aspects of physics can be derived solely from symmetry considerations. This substantiates the statement of E.P. Wigner ... if we knew all the laws of nature, or the ultimate Law of nature, the invarianceproperties of these laws would not furnish us new information. Thanks to Wigner we now also under stand the implications of quantum physics and symmetry considerations: Poincare invariance dictates both the characteristic propertiesof particles (mass, spin, ...) and the wave equations of spin 0, 1/2, 1, ... objects. Further, the work of C.N. Yang and R. Mills reveals the consequences of internal symmetries as exemplified in the symmetry group of elementaryparticle physics. Given this pivotal role of symmetries it is thus not surprising that current research in fundamental physics is to a great degree motivated and inspired by considerations of symmetry. The treatment of symmetries inthis monograph ranges from classical physics to now well-established theories of fundamental interactions, to the latest research on unified theories and quantum gravity

Title:Theory of Semiconductor Lasers [electronic resource] : From Basis of Quantum Electronics to Analyses of the Mode Competition Phenomena and Noise
Author(s): Minoru Yamada
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book provides a unified and complete theory for semiconductor lasers, covering topics ranging from the principles of classical and quantum mechanics to highly advanced levels for readers who need to analyze the complicatedoperating characteristi cs generated in the real application of semiconductor lasers. The author conducts a theoretical analysis especially on the instabilities involved in the operation of semiconductor lasers. A density matrixinto the theory for semiconductor lasers is introd uced and the formulation of an improved rate equation to help understand the mode competition phenomena which cause the optical external feedback noise is thoroughly described from thebasic quantum mechanics. The derivation of the improved rate equation w ill allow readers to extend the analysis for the different types of semiconductor materials and laser structures they deal with. This book is intended not onlyfor students and academic researchers but also for engineers who develop lasers for the market, as the advanced topics covered are dedicated to real problems in implementing semiconductor lasers for practical use

Title:Quantum Dynamics of a Particle in a Tracking Chamber [electronic resource]
Author(s): Rodolfo Figari
Alessandro Teta
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In the original formulation of quantum mechanics the existence of a precise border between a microscopic world, governed by quantum mechanics, and a macroscopic world, described by classical mechanics was assumed. Moderntheoretical and experimental p hysics has moved that border several times, carefully investigating its definition and making available to observation larger and larger quantum systems. The presentbook examines a paradigmatic case ofthe transition from quantum to classical behavior:A qu antum particle is revealed in a trackingchamber as a trajectory obeying the laws of classical mechanics. The authorsprovide herea purely quantum-mechanical descriptionofthis behavior, thus helping to illuminate the nature of the border between the quantum and the classical

Title:Nonequilibrium and Irreversibility [electronic resource]
Author(s): Giovanni Gallavotti
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book concentrates on the properties of the stationary states in chaotic systems of particles or fluids, leaving aside the theory of the way they can be reached. The stationary states of particles or of fluids (understood asprobability distributi ons on microscopic configurations or on the fields describing continua) have received important new ideas and data from numerical simulations and reviews are needed. The starting point is to find out which timeinvariant distributions come into play in phy sics. A special feature of this book is the historical approach. To identify the problems the author analyzes the papers of the founding fathers Boltzmann, Clausius and Maxwell includingtranslations of the relevant (parts of ) historical documents. He als o establishes a close link between treatment of irreversible phenomena in statistical mechanics and the theory of chaotic systems at and beyond the onset ofturbulence as developed by Sinai, Ruelle, Bowen (SRB) and others: the author gives arguments intend ing to support strongly the viewpoint that stationary states in or out of equilibrium can be described in a unified way. In this book itis the chaotic hypothesis, which can be seen as an extension of the classical ergodic hypothesis to non equilibrium phe nomena, that plays the central role. It is shown that SRB - often considered as a kind of mathematicalplayground with no impact on physical reality - has indeed a sound physical interpretation an observation which to many might be new and a very welcome i nsight. Following this, many consequences of the chaotic hypothesis are analyzedin chapter 3 - 4, and in chapter 5 a few applications are proposed. Chapter 6 is historical: carefully analyzing the old literature on the subject, especially ergodic theory a nd its relevance for statistical mechanics an approachwhich gives the book a very personal touch. The book contains an extensive coverage of current research (partly from the authors and his coautho

Title:Rheophysics [electronic resource] : Matter in all its States
Author(s): Philippe Coussot
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book presents a unified view of the physicochemical origin of the mechanical behaviour of gases, simple solids and liquids, suspensions, polymers, emulsions, foams, and granular materials, along with techniques for measuringthat behaviour. Besid es molecular materials in all their classical gaseous, solid, or liquid states, we deal daily with a number of other materials made of coarser elements such as polymers, cells, grains, bubbles, and droplets. Theytake on the familiar appearance of paints, inks, cements, muds, foams, emulsions, toothpastes, gels, etc. These materials exhibit complex structures and sometimes amazing types of mechanical behaviour, often intermediate between thoseof a simple liquid and a simple solid. From a practical standpoi nt, the aim is to analyze their internal evolution (aging, restructuring, phase separation, etc.), then to formulate these materials in accordance with the desiredproperties, and thereby devise new materials. With that aim in mind, it is crucial to unders tand how these materials deform or flow, depending on the interactions and structures formed by the elements they contain. This book isintended for students as well as more advanced researchers in mechanics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The mathematic al formalism is reduced in order to focus on physical explanations

Title:Embedded Random Matrix Ensembles in Quantum Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): V.K.B Kota
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Although used with increasing frequency in many branches of physics, random matrix ensembles are not always sufficiently specific to account for important features of the physical system at hand. One refinement which retains thebasic stochastic appro ach but allows for such features consists in the use of embedded ensembles. The present text is an exhaustive introduction to and survey of this important field. Starting with an easy-to-read introduction togeneral random matrix theory, the text then deve lops the necessary concepts from the beginning, accompanying the reader to the frontiers of present-day research. With some notable exceptions, to date these ensembles have primarily beenapplied in nuclear spectroscopy. A characteristic example is the use of a random two-body interaction in the framework of the nuclear shell model. Yet, topics in atomic physics, mesoscopic physics, quantum information science andstatistical mechanics of isolated finite quantum systems can also be addressed using these ens embles. This book addresses graduate students and researchers with an interest in applications of random matrix theory to the modeling ofmore complex physical systems and interactions, with applications such as statistical spectroscopy in mind.

Author(s): Harry Varvoglis
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Our understanding ofnature, and in particular of physics and the laws governing it, has changed radically since the days of the ancient Greek natural philosophers. This book explains how and why these changes occurred, throughlandmark experiments as well as theories that - for their time - wererevolutionary. The presentation covers Mechanics, Optics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Relativity Theory, Atomic Physicsand Quantum Physics. The book placesemphasis on ideas and on a qualitative presentati on, rather than on mathematics and equations. Thus, althoughprimarily addressed to those who are studying or have studied science,it can alsobe read by non-specialists. The authorconcludeswith a discussion ofthe evolution and organization of universities, from ancient times until today, and ofthe organization and dissemination of knowledge through scientific publications and conferences

Title:Slow Viscous Flow [electronic resource]
Author(s): William E Langlois
Michel O Deville
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Leonardo wrote, 'Mechanics is the paradise of the mathematical sciences, because by means of it one comes to the fruits of mathematics' replace 'Mechanics' by 'Fluid mechanics' and here we are. - from the Preface to theSecond Edition Although the ex ponential growth of computer power has advanced the importance of simulations and visualization tools for elaborating new models, designs and technologies, the discipline of fluid mechanics is still large, and turbulence in flows remains a challenging prob lem in classical physics. Like its predecessor, the revised and expanded Second Edition of this book addresses the basic principles of fluid mechanics and solves fluid flow problemswhere viscous effects are the dominant physical phenomena. Much progress h as occurred in the nearly half a century that has passed since the edition of 1964. As predicted, aspects of hydrodynamics once considered offbeat have risen toimportance. For example, the authors have worked on problems where variations in viscosity and surface tension cannot be ignored. The advent of nanotechnology has broadened interest in the hydrodynamics of thin films, and hydromagneticeffects and radiative heat transfer are routinely encountered in materials processing. This monograph develops the basic equations, in the three most important coordinate systems, in a way that makes it easy to incorporate thesephenomena into the theory. The book originally described by Prof. Langlois as a monograph on theoretical hydrodynamics, written in the languag e of applied mathematics offers considerable new coverage including the second principleof thermodynamics, Boussinesq approximation, time dependent flows, Marangoni convection, Kovasznay flow, plane periodic solutions, Hele-Shaw cells, Stokeslets, rotlets , finite element methods, Wannier flow, corner eddies, and analysisof the Stokes operator

Title:Harmonic and Complex Analysis and its Applications [electronic resource]
Author(s): Alexander Vasil'ev
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume highlights the main results of the research performed within the network Harmonic and Complex Analysis and its Applications (HCAA), which was a five-year (20072012) European Science Foundation Programmeintended to explore and to strengthe n the bridge between two scientific communities: analysts with broad backgrounds in complex and harmonic analysis and mathematical physics, and specialists in physics and applied sciences. Itcoordinated actions for advancing harmonic and complex analysis and for expanding its application to challenging scientific problems. Particular topics considered by this Programme included conformal and quasiconformal mappings, potential theory, Banach spaces of analytic functions and their applications to the problem s of fluid mechanics, conformal field theory, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, and signal processing. This book is a collection of surveyswritten as a result of activities of the Programme and will be interesting and useful for professionals and novi ces in analysis and mathematical physics, as well as for graduate students. Browsing the volume, the reader willundoubtedly notice that, as the scope of the Programme is rather broad, there are many interrelations between the various contributions, which can be regarded as different facets of a common theme
