Note: | The book is devoted to rigorous derivation of macroscopic mathematical models as a homogenization of exact mathematical models at the microscopic level. The idea is quite natural: one first must describe the joint motion of theelastic skeleton and th e fluid in pores at the microscopic level by means of classical continuum mechanics, and then use homogenization to find appropriate approximation models (homogenized equations). The Navier-Stokes equations stillhold at this scale of the pore size in the order of 5 15 microns. Thus, as we have mentioned above, the macroscopic mathematical models obtained are still within the limits of physical applicability. These mathematical modelsdescribe different physical processes of liquid filtration and acoustics in poroelastic media, such as isothermal or non-isothermal filtration, hydraulic shock, isothermal or non-isothermal acoustics, diffusion-convection, filtrationand acoustics in composite media or in porous fractured reservoirs. Note: | Over the course of the last century it has become clear that both elementary particle physics and relativity theories are based on the notion of symmetries. These symmetries become manifest in that the laws of nature areinvariant under spacetime tran sformations and/or gauge transformations. The consequences of these symmetries were analyzed as early as in 1918 by Emmy Noether on the level of action functionals. Her work did not receive due recognitionfor nearly half a century, but can today be unders tood as a recurring theme in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and special relativity, Yang-Mills type quantum field theories, and in general relativity. As a matter of fact, asshown in this monograph, many aspects of physics can be derived solely from symmetry considerations. This substantiates the statement of E.P. Wigner ... if we knew all the laws of nature, or the ultimate Law of nature, the invarianceproperties of these laws would not furnish us new information. Thanks to Wigner we now also under stand the implications of quantum physics and symmetry considerations: Poincare invariance dictates both the characteristic propertiesof particles (mass, spin, ...) and the wave equations of spin 0, 1/2, 1, ... objects. Further, the work of C.N. Yang and R. Mills reveals the consequences of internal symmetries as exemplified in the symmetry group of elementaryparticle physics. Given this pivotal role of symmetries it is thus not surprising that current research in fundamental physics is to a great degree motivated and inspired by considerations of symmetry. The treatment of symmetries inthis monograph ranges from classical physics to now well-established theories of fundamental interactions, to the latest research on unified theories and quantum gravity |

He als o establishes a close link between treatment of irreversible phenomena in statistical mechanics and the theory of chaotic systems at and beyond the onset ofturbulence as developed by Sinai, Ruelle, Bowen (SRB) and others: the author gives arguments intend ing to support strongly the viewpoint that stationary states in or out of equilibrium can be described in a unified way. In this book itis the chaotic hypothesis, which can be seen as an extension of the classical ergodic hypothesis to non equilibrium phe nomena, that plays the central role. It is shown that SRB - often considered as a kind of mathematicalplayground with no impact on physical reality - has indeed a sound physical interpretation an observation which to many might be new and a very welcome i nsight. Note: | Although used with increasing frequency in many branches of physics, random matrix ensembles are not always sufficiently specific to account for important features of the physical system at hand. One refinement which retains thebasic stochastic appro ach but allows for such features consists in the use of embedded ensembles. The present text is an exhaustive introduction to and survey of this important field. Starting with an easy-to-read introduction togeneral random matrix theory, the text then deve lops the necessary concepts from the beginning, accompanying the reader to the frontiers of present-day research. With some notable exceptions, to date these ensembles have primarily beenapplied in nuclear spectroscopy. A characteristic example is the use of a random two-body interaction in the framework of the nuclear shell model. Yet, topics in atomic physics, mesoscopic physics, quantum information science andstatistical mechanics of isolated finite quantum systems can also be addressed using these ens embles. This book addresses graduate students and researchers with an interest in applications of random matrix theory to the modeling ofmore complex physical systems and interactions, with applications such as statistical spectroscopy in mind. |
