Title:The Tower of Hanoi Myths and Maths [electronic resource]
Author(s): Andreas M Hinz

Uro Milutinovi
Ciril Petr
Date:2013
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This is the first comprehensive monograph on the mathematical theory of the solitaire game The Tower of Hanoi which was invented in the 19th century by the French number theorist douard Lucas. The book comprises a surveyof the historical development from the games predecessors up to recent research in mathematics and applications in computer science and psychology. Apart from long-standing myths it contains a thorough, largely self-containedpresentation of the essential mathematical facts with comple te proofs, including also unpublished material. The main objects of research today are the so-called Hanoi graphs and the related Sierpiski graphs. Acknowledging the greatpopularity of the topic in computer science, algorithms and their correctness proofs form an essential part of the book. In view of the most important practical applications of the Tower of Hanoi and its variants, namely in physics, network theory, and cognitive (neuro)psychology, other related structures and puzzles like, e.g., the Tower of London, are addressed. Numerous captivating integer sequences arise along the way, but also many open questions imposethemselves. Central among these is the famed Frame-Stewart conjecture. Despite many attempts to decide it and large-scale numerical e xperiments supporting its truth, it remains unsettled after more than 70 years and thus demonstratesthe timeliness of the topic. Enriched with elaborate illustrations, connections to other puzzles and challenges for the reader in the form of (solved) exer cises as well as problems for further exploration, this book is enjoyablereading for students, educators, game enthusiasts and researchers alike

Note:Complexity occurs in biological and synthetic systems alike. This general phenomenon has been addressed in recent publications by investigators in disciplines ranging from chemistry and biology to psychology and philosophy.Studies of complexity for m olecular scientists have focussed on breaking symmetry, dissipative processes, and emergence. Investigators in the social and medical sciences have focused on neurophenomenology, cognitive approaches andself-consciousness. Complexity in both structure and function is inherent in many scientific disciplines of current significance and also in technologies of current importance that are rapidly evolving to address global societalneeds. Several of these multifaceted scientific disciplines are addressed in th is book including complexity from the general and philosophical perspective, magnetic phenomena, control of self assembly and function in largemulticomponent clusters, application of theory to probe structure and mechanism in highly complex molecular spec ies, and the design of multifunctional nanoscale molecules of value in decontamination and solar fuels research. Eachchapter is both a review and addresses some ongoing challenges, thus each should provide a good preparation for further work in these high ly active areas of research endeavour.

Title:Polystochastic Models for Complexity [electronic resource]
Author(s): Octavian Iordache
Date:2010
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book is devoted to complexity understanding and management, considered as the main source of efficiency and prosperity for the next decades. Divided into six chapters, the book begins with a presentation of basic concepts ascomplexity, emergence and closure. The second chapter looks to methods and introduces polystochastic models, the wave equation, possibilities and entropy. The third chapter focusing on physical and chemical systems analyzes flow-sheetsynthesis, cyclic operations of separation , drug delivery systems and entropy production. Biomimetic systems represent the main objective of the fourth chapter. Case studies refer to bio-inspired calculation methods, to the role ofartificial genetic codes, neural networks and neural codes for evo lutionary calculus and for evolvable circuits as biomimetic devices. The fifth chapter, taking its inspiration from systems sciences and cognitive sciences looks toengineering design, case base reasoning methods, failure analysis, and multi-agent manufact uring systems. Perspectives and integrative points of view are discussed in the sixth chapter with reference to the classification of sciences, cybernetics and its extensions, and to transdisciplinarity and categorification. Written for: engineers, researc hers, and students in chemical, biochemical, computing and systems science engineering, in neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and mathematics

Title:Ubiquitous Quantum Structure [electronic resource] : From Psychology to Finance
Author(s): Andrei Y Khrennikov
Date:2010
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Quantum-like structure is present practically everywhere. Quantum-like (QL) models, i.e. models based on the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics and its generalizations can be successfully applied to cognitive science, psychology, genetics, ec onomics, finances, and game theory. This book is not about quantum mechanics as a physical theory. The short review of quantum postulates is therefore mainly of historical value: quantum mechanics is just thefirst example of the successful application of non-Kolmogorov probabilities, the first step towards a contextual probabilistic description of natural, biological, psychological, social, economical or financial phenomena. A generalcontextual probabilistic model (Vxj model) is presented. It can be used for describing probabilities in both quantum and classical (statistical) mechanics as well as in the above mentioned phenomena. This model can be representedin a quantum-like way, namely, in complex and more general Hilbert spaces. In this way quantum pro bability is totally demystified: Born's representation of quantum probabilities by complex probability amplitudes, wave functions, issimply a special representation of this type

Title:Contextual Approach to Quantum Formalism [electronic resource]
Author(s): Andrei Khrennikov
Date:2009
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The aim of this book is to show that the probabilistic formalisms of classical statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics can be unified on the basis of a general contextual probabilistic model. By taking into account thedependence of (classical) pr obabilities on contexts (i.e. complexes of physical conditions), one can reproduce all distinct features of quantum probabilities such as the interference of probabilities and the violation of Bellsinequality. Moreover, by starting with a formula for the interference of probabilities (which generalizes the well known classical formula of total probability), one can construct the representation of contextual probabilities bycomplex probability amplitudes or, in the abstract formalism, by normalized vectors of the complex Hilbert space or its hyperbolic generalization. Thus the Hilbert space representation of probabilities can be naturally derived fromclassical probabilistic assumptions. An important chapter of the book critically reviews known no-go theore ms: the impossibility to establish a finer description of micro-phenomena than provided by quantum mechanics and, inparticular, the commonly accepted consequences of Bells theorem (including quantum non-locality). Also, possible applications of the contex tual probabilistic model and its quantum-like representation in complex Hilbert spaces inother fields (e.g. in cognitive science and psychology) are discussed

Note:Remarkable advances in computation and data storage and the ready availability of huge data sets have been the keys to the growth of the new disciplines of data mining and machine learning, while the enormous success of the HumanGenome Project has op ened up the field of bioinformatics. These exciting developments, which led to the introduction of many innovative statistical tools for high-dimensional data analysis, are described here in detail. The authortakes a broad perspective for the first time i n a book on multivariate analysis, nonlinear methods are discussed in detail as well as linear methods. Techniques covered range from traditional multivariate methods, such as multipleregression, principal components, canonical variates, linear discrimina nt analysis, factor analysis, clustering, multidimensional scaling, and correspondence analysis, to the newer methods of density estimation, projection pursuit, neural networks, multivariate reduced-rank regression, nonlinear manifold learning, bagging, bo osting, random forests, independent component analysis, support vector machines, and classification and regression trees. Another uniquefeature of this book is the discussion of database management systems. This book is appropriate for advanced undergradu ate students, graduate students, and researchers in statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, psychology, cognitive sciences, business, medicine, bioinformatics, and engineering. Familiarity with multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and pro bability and statistics is required. The book presents a carefully-integrated mixtureof theory and applications, and of classical and modern multivariate statistical techniques, including Bayesian methods. There are over 60 interesting data sets used as e xamples in the book, over 200 exercises, and many colorillustrations and photographs. Alan J. Title:Multivariate and Mixture Distribution Rasch Models [electronic resource] : Extensions and Applications

Claus H Carstensen
Date:2007
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This volume covers extensions of the Rasch model, one of the most researched and applied models in educational research and social science. This collection contains 22 chapters by some of the most recognized international expertsin the field. They co ver topics ranging from general model extensions to applications in fields as diverse as cognition, personality, organizational and sports psychology, and health sciences and education. The Rasch model is designedfor categorical data, often collected as e xaminees' responses to multiple tasks such as cognitive items from psychological tests or from educational assessments. The Rasch model's elegant mathematical form is suitable for extensionsthat allow for greater flexibility in handling complex samples of examinees and collections of tasks from different domains. In these extensions, the Rasch model is enhanced by additional structural elements that either account fordifferences between diverse populations or for differences among observed variables. Rese arch on extending well-known statistical tools like regression, mixture distribution, and hierarchical linear models has led to the adoption ofRasch model features to handle categorical observed variables. We maintain both perspectives in the volume and s how how these merged modelsRasch models with a more complex item or population structureare derived either from theRasch model or from a structural model, how they are estimated, and where they are applied. Matthias von Davier is a Senior Research Scienti st in the Research & Development Division at Educational Testing Service. He is the author ofWINMIRA, a software package for estimating latent class models, mixture distribution Rasch models, and hybrid Rasch models. The software grew out of his work with colleagues at the Methodology Department of the Institute for ScienceEducation (IPN) in Kiel, Germany. Von Davier's current research is concerned with extensions of Rasch models and more general
