Note:The rheology of dense red blood cell suspensions is investigated via computer simulations based on the lattice Boltzmann, the immersed boundary, and the finite element methods. The red blood cells are treated as extended anddeformable particles immer sed in the ambient fluid. In the first part of the work, the numerical model and strategies for stress evaluation are discussed. In the second part, the behavior of the suspensions in simple shear flow isstudied for different volume fractions, particle de formabilities, and shear rates. Shear thinning behavior is recovered. The existence of a shear-induced transition from a tumbling to a tank-treading motion is demonstrated. Thetransition can be parameterized by a single quantity, namely the effective capi llary number. It is the ratio of the suspension stress and the characteristic particle membrane stress. At the transition point, a strong increase in theorientational order of the red blood cells and a significant decrease of the particle diffusivity are observed. However, the average cell deformation shows no signature of the transition

Note:This book offers a modern updated review on the most important activities in today dynamical systems and statistical mechanics by some of the best experts in the domain. It gives a contemporary and pedagogical view on theories ofclassical and quantum chaos and complexity in hamiltonian and ergodic systems and their applications to anomalous transport in fluids, plasmas, oceans and atom-optic devices and to control of chaotic transport. The book is issued fromlecture notes of the International Summer School on Chaotic Dynamics and Transport in Classical and Quantum Systems held in Cargse (Corsica) 18th to the 30th August 2003. It reflects the spirit of the School to provide lecturesat the post-doctoral level on basic concepts and tools. The first part concerns ergodicity and mixing, complexity and entropy functions, SRB measures, fractal dimensions and bifurcations in hamiltonian systems. Then, models ofdynamical evolutions of transport processes in classical and quantum systems have been largely expl ained. The second part concerns transport in fluids, plasmas and reacting media. On the other hand, new experiments of cold opticallytrapped atoms and electrodynamics cavity have been thoroughly presented. Finally, several papers bear on synchronism and c ontrol of chaos. The target audience of the proceedings are physicists, mathematicians and all scientistsinvolved in Chaos and Dynamical Systems Theory and their fundamental applications in Physics and in the Science of Complex and Nonlinear phenomena

Note:The physics of soft matter - materials such as elastomers, gels, foams and liquid crystals - is an area of intense interest and contemporary study. Moreover, soft matter plays a role in a wide variety of important processes andapplication. For exampl e, gel swelling and dynamics are an essential part of many biological and individual processes, such as motility mechanisms in bacteria and the transport and absorption of drugs. Ferroelectrics, liquid crystals,and elastomers are being used to design ever faster switching devices. Experimental studies, such as scattering, optical and electron microscopy, have provided a great deal of detailed information on structures. But the integration ofmathematical modeling and analysis with experimental approaches p romises to greatly increase our understanding of structure-property relationships and constitutive equations. The workshop on Modeling of Soft Matter has taken such anintegrated approach. It brought together researchers in applied and computational mathem atical fields such as differential equations, dynamical systems, analysis, and fluid and solid mechanics, and scientists and engineers from avariety of disciplines relevant to soft matter physics. An important outcome of the workshop has been to identify beautiful and novel scientific problems arising in soft matter that are in need of mathematical modeling and appearamenable to it and so to set the stage for further research. This volume presents a collection of papers representing the key aspects of the topics discussed at depth in the course of the workshop
