The direction of the main radiation lobe of a regular plasmonic array can be changed abruptly by small variations in external control parameters. This optical effect,apart from its relevance for applications, is a revealing example of the Umk lapp process and, thus, is a visual manifestation of one of the most fundamental laws of solid state physics: the conservation of the quasi-momentum to withina reciprocal lattice vector. The thesis analyzes not only results for particular device designs b ut also a variety of advanced numerical methods which are extended by the author and described in detail. These methods can be used as asound starting point for further research.

Note:This thesis examines a novel class of flexible electronic material with great potential for use in the construction of stretchable amplifiers and memory elements. Most remarkably the composite material produces spontaneousoscillations that increase i n frequency when pressure is applied to it. In this way, the material mimics the excitatory response of pressure-sensing neurons in the human skin. The composites, formed of silicone and graphiticnanoparticles, were prepared in several allotropic forms an d functionalized with naphthalene diimide molecules. A systematic study is presented of the negative differential resistance (NDR) region of the current-voltage curves, whichis responsible for the materials active properties. This study was conducted as a function of temperature, graphite filling fraction, scaling to reveal the break-up of the samples into electric field domains at the onset of the NDRregion, and an electric-field induced metal-insulator transition in graphite nanoparticles. The effect of molecular functionalization on the miscibility threshold and the current-voltage curves is demonstrated. Room-temperature andlow-temperature measurements were performed on these composite films under strains using a remote-controlled, custom-made step mo tor bench

Note:Numerous applications of rod structures in civil engineering, aircraft and spacecraft confirm the importance of the topic. On the other hand the majority of books on structural mechanics use some simplifying hypotheses thesehypotheses do not allow to consider some important effects, for instance the boundary layer effects near the points of junction of rods. So the question concerning the limits of applicability of structural mechanics hypotheses and thepossibilities of their refinement arise. In thi s connection the asymptotic analysis of equations of mathematical physics, the equations of elasticity in rod structures (without these hypotheses and simplifying assumptions beingimposed) is undertaken in the present book. Moreover, a lot of modern struc tures are made of composite materials and therefore the material of the rods is not homogeneous. This inhomogeneity of the material can generate some unexpectedeffects. These effects are analysed in this book. The methods of multi-scale modelling are pres ented by the homogenization, multi-level asymptotic analysis and the domain decomposition. These methods give an access to a new class ofhybrid models combining macroscopic description with microscopic zooms

Note:The physics of soft matter - materials such as elastomers, gels, foams and liquid crystals - is an area of intense interest and contemporary study. Moreover, soft matter plays a role in a wide variety of important processes andapplication. For exampl e, gel swelling and dynamics are an essential part of many biological and individual processes, such as motility mechanisms in bacteria and the transport and absorption of drugs. Ferroelectrics, liquid crystals,and elastomers are being used to design ever faster switching devices. But the integration ofmathematical modeling and analysis with experimental approaches p romises to greatly increase our understanding of structure-property relationships and constitutive equations. The workshop on Modeling of Soft Matter has taken such anintegrated approach.
