Title: | The Welsh Language in the Digital Age [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Georg Rehm Hans Uszkoreit |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of languagetechnology in Europe vari es between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language an d the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysisfocused on the 23 official European languages as well as other importa nt national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailedexpert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of add itional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders fromcommercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology provide rs and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategicresearch agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020 |

Title: | Separable Type Representations of Matrices and Fast Algorithms [electronic resource] : Volume 2 Eigenvalue Method |
Author(s): |
Yuli Eidelman Israel Gohberg Iulian Haimovici |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Basel : Springer Basel : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This two-volume work presents a systematic theoretical and computational study of several types of generalizations of separable matrices. The primary focus is on fast algorithms (many of linear complexity) for matrices insemiseparable, quasiseparable , band and companion form. The work examines algorithms of multiplication, inversion and description of eigenstructure and includes a wealth of illustrative examples throughout the different chapters. Thesecond volume, consisting of four parts, addresses the eigenvalue problem for matrices with quasiseparable structure and applications to the polynomial root finding problem. In the first part the properties of the characteristicpolynomials of principal leading submatrices, the structure of eigenspaces and the basic methods for computing eigenvalues are studied in detail for matrices with quasiseparable representation of the first order. The second part isdevoted to the divide and conquer method, with the main algorithms also being derived for matrices wit h quasiseparable representation of order one. The QR iteration method for some classes of matrices with quasiseparablerepresentations of any order is studied in the third part. This method is then used in the last part in order to provide a fast solver fo r the polynomial root finding problem. The work is based mostly on results obtained by the authorsand their coauthors. Due to its many significant applications and accessible style, the text will be a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, numerical analysts, computer scientists and mathematicians alike |
Contents: | Part 5. The eigenvalue structure of order one quasiseparable matrices |
21. Quasiseparable of order one matrices. Characteristic polynomials
22. Eigenvalues with geometric multiplicity one
23. Kernels of quasiseparable of order one matrices
24. Multiple eigenvalues
Part 6. Divide and conquer method for eigenproblems

The first part is mainly theoretical in character, introducing and studying the quasiseparable and semiseparable representations of matrices and minimal rank completion problems. Three furthercompletions are treated in the second part. The first applications of the qua siseparable and semiseparable structure are included in the third part, where the interplay between the quasiseparable structure and discrete time varyinglinear systems with boundary conditions play an essential role. The fourth part includes factorizatio n and inversion fast algorithms for matrices via quasiseparable and semiseparable structures. The work is based mostly on resultsobtained by the authors and their coauthors. Due to its many significant applications and accessible style, the text will be a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, numerical analysts, computer scientists and mathematiciansalike |

Note: | Martin Grtschel is one of the most influential mathematicians of our time. He has received numerous honors and holds a number of key positions in the international mathematical community. He celebrated his 65th birthday onSeptember 10, 2013. Martin G rtschels doctoral descendant tree 19832012, i.e., the first 30 years, features 39 children, 74 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, a total of 139 doctoraldescendants. This book starts with a personal tribute to Martin G rtschel by the editors (Part I), a contribution by his very special predecessor Manfred Padberg on Facets and Rank of Integer Polyhedra (Part II), and thedoctoral descendant tree 19832012 (Part III). The core of this book (Part IV) contains 16 contributio ns, each of which is coauthored by at least one doctoral descendant. The sequence of the articles starts with contributions tothe theory of mathematical optimization, including polyhedral combinatorics, extended formulations, mixed-integer convex optimiza tion, superclasses of perfect graphs, efficient algorithms for subtree-telecenters, junctions in acyclicgraphs, and preemptive restricted strip covering, as well as efficient approximation of non-preemptive restricted strip covering. Combinations of new t heoretical insights with algorithms and experiments deal with network designproblems, combinatorial optimization problems with submodular objective functions, and more general mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems. Applications include VLSI layout design, systems biology, wireless network design,mean-risk optimization, and gas network optimization. Computational studies include a semidefinite branch and cut approach for the max k-cut problem, mixed-integer nonlinear optimal control, and mixed-inte ger linear optimization forscheduling and routing of fly-in safari planes. The two closing articles are devoted to computational advances in general mixed-integer li |

Note: | In order to precisely model real-life systems or man-made devices, both nonlinear and dynamic properties need to be taken into account. The generic, black-box model based on Volterra and Wiener series is capable of representingfairly complicated nonl inear and dynamic interactions, however, the resulting identification algorithms are impractical, mainly due to their computational complexity. One of the alternatives offering fast identification algorithms isthe block-oriented approach, in which systems of relatively simple structures are considered. The book provides nonparametric identification algorithms designed for such systems together with the description of their asymptotic andcomputational properties |

Note: | Differential algebraic equations (DAEs), including so-called descriptor systems, began to attract significant research interest in applied and numerical mathematics in the early 1980s, no more than about three decades ago. In thisrelatively short tim e, DAEs have become a widely acknowledged tool to model processes subjected to certain constraints in order to simulate and to control processes in various application fields such as network simulation, chemicalkinematics, mechanical engineering and syste ms biology. DAEs and their more abstract versions in infinite dimensional spaces comprise a great potential forthe future mathematical modeling of complex coupled processes. The purpose ofthe book is to expose the impressive complexity of general DAEs fro m an analytical point of view, to describe the state of the art as well as open problems andin sodoing to motivate further researchof this versatile, extraordinary topic from a broader mathematical perspective. The book elaborates on a new general, structu ral analysis capturing linear and nonlinear DAEs in a hierarchical way. The DAE structure is exposed by means of specialprojector functions. Some issues on numerical integration and computational aspects are also treated in this context |

Title: | Simulating Social Complexity [electronic resource] : A Handbook |

Note: | Social systems are among the most complex known. This poses particular problems for those who wish to understand them. The complexity often makes analytic approaches infeasible and natural language approaches inadequate forrelating intricate cause an d effect. However, individual- and agent-based computational approaches hold out the possibility of new and deeper understanding of such systems. Simulating Social Complexity examines all aspects of usingagent- or individual-based simulation. This approac h represents systems as individual elements having each their own set of differing states and internal processes. The interactions between elements in the simulation representinteractions in the target systems. What makes these elements social is that the y are usefully interpretable as interacting elements of an observed society. In this, the focus is on human society, but can be extended to includesocial animals or artificial agents where such work enhances our understanding of human society. The phenome na of interest then result (emerge) from the dynamics of the interaction of social actors in an essential way and are usuallynot easily simplifiable by, for example, considering only representative actors. The introduction of accessible agent-based modell ing allows the representation of social complexity in a more natural and direct manner than previoustechniques. In particular, it is no longer necessary to distort a model with the introduction of overly strong assumptions simply in order to obtain analyt ic tractability. This makes agent-based modelling relatively accessible to arange of scientists. The outcomes of such models can be displayed and animated in ways that also make them more interpretable by experts and stakeholders. This handbook is intende d to help in the process of maturation of this newfield. It brings together, through the collaborative effort of many leading researchers, summaries of the best thinking and practice in this a |

Note: | This book covers recent mathematical, numerical, and statistical approaches for multistatic imaging of targets with waves at single or multiple frequencies. The waves can be acoustic, elastic or electromagnetic. They are generatedby point sources on a transmitter array and measured on a receiver array. An important problem in multistatic imaging is to quantify and understand the trade-offs between data size, computational complexity, signal-to-noise ratio, andresolution. Another fundamental problem i s to have a shape representation well suited to solving target imaging problems from multistatic data. In this book the trade-off between resolution and stability when the data are noisy isaddressed. Efficient imaging algorithms are provided and their res olution and stability with respect to noise in the measurements analyzed. It also shows that high-order polarization tensors provide an accurate representation of thetarget. Moreover, a dictionary-matching technique based on new invariants for the general ized polarization tensors is introduced. Matlab codes for the main algorithms described in this book are provided. Numerical illustrations usingthese codes in order to highlight the performance and show the limitations of numerical approaches for multista tic imaging are presented |

Title: | Logical Foundations of Mathematics and Computational Complexity [electronic resource] : A Gentle Introduction |

Publisher: | Heidelberg : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The two main themes of this book, logic and complexity, are both essential for understanding the main problems about the foundations of mathematics. Logical Foundations of Mathematics and Computational Complexity covers a broadspectrum of results in logic and set theory that are relevant to the foundations, as well as the results in computational complexity and the interdisciplinary area of proof complexity. The author presents his ideas on how these areasare connected, what are the most fundamental problems and how they should be approached. In particular, he argues that complexity is as important for foundations as are the more traditional concepts of computability and provability.Emphasis is on explaining the essence of concepts and the ideas of p roofs, rather than presenting precise formal statements and full proofs. Each section starts with concepts and results easily explained, and gradually proceeds to moredifficult ones. The notes after each section present some formal definitions, theorems a nd proofs. Logical Foundations of Mathematics and Computational Complexity is aimed at graduate students of all fields of mathematics who areinterested in logic, complexity and foundations. It will also be of interest for both physicists and philosophers who are curious to learn the basics of logic and complexity theory |

Note: | The connected dominating set (CDS)has been a classic subject studied in graph theory since 1975. It has been discovered inrecent years thatCDS has important applications in communication networks especially in wirelessnetworks as a virtual backbone. Motivated from those applications, many papers have been published in the literature during last 15 years. Now, the connected dominating set has become a hot research topic in computer science. Thiswork isa valuable reference for researchers in computer s cience and operations research, especially in areas of theoretical computer science, computer communication networks, combinatorial optimization, industrial engineering, anddiscrete mathematics. The book may also be used as a text in a graduate seminar fo r PhD students. Readers should have a basic knowledge of computational complexity and combinatorial optimization. In this book, the authors present thestate-of-the-art in the study of connected dominating sets. Each chapter is devoted to one problem, and consists of three parts: motivation and overview, problem complexity analysis, and approximation algorithm designs. The text isdesigned togive the reader a clear understanding of thebackground, formulation, existing important research results, and open pr oblems. Topics include minimum CDS, routing-cost constrained CDS, weighted CDS, directed CDS, SCDS(strongly connected dominating set), WCDS (weakly connected dominating set), CDS-partition, virtual backbone in wireless networks, convertor placement in opt ical networks, coverage in wireless sensor networks, and more |

Title: | Stream Ciphers [electronic resource] |

Andreas Klein |

Publisher: | London : Springer London : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | In cryptography, ciphers is the technical term for encryption and decryption algorithms. They are an important sub-family that features high speed and easy implementation and are an essential part of wireless internet and mobilephones. Unlike block ciphers, stream ciphers work on single bits or single words and need to maintain an internal state to change the cipher at each step. Typically stream ciphers can reach higher speeds than block ciphers but theycan be more vulnerable to attack. Here, mathe matics comes into play. Number theory, algebra and statistics are the key to a better understanding of stream ciphers and essential for an informed decision on their safety. Since thetheory is less developed, stream ciphers are often skipped in books on cryptography. This book fills this gap. It covers the mathematics of stream ciphers and its history, and also discusses many modern examples and their robustnessagainst attacks. Part I covers linear feedback shift registers, non-linear combinations of LF SRs, algebraic attacks and irregular clocked shift registers. Part II studies some special ciphers including the security of mobile phones,RC4 and related ciphers, the eStream project and the blum-blum-shub generator and related ciphers. Stream Ciphers r equires basic knowledge of algebra and linear algebra, combinatorics and probability theory and programming.Appendices in Part III help the reader with the more complicated subjects and provides the mathematical background needed. It covers, for example, complexity, number theory, finite fields, statistics, combinatorics. Stream Ciphersconcludes with exercises and solutions and is directed towards advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and computer science |

The f irst part of the book studies classical problems and techniquesthat refer to polyhedral structures. The authors include a study on algorithms for computing convex hulls as well as the construction ofVoronoi diagrams and Delone triangulations. The second p art of the book develops the primary concepts of (non-linear) computational algebraic geometry. Here, the book looks at Grbner bases and solving systems of polynomialequations. The theory is illustrated by applications in computer graphics, curve reconstr uction and robotics. Throughout the book, interconnections between computational geometry and other disciplines (such as algebraic geometry, optimization and numerical mathematics) are established. Polyhedral and Algebraic Methods in Computational Geometry is directed towards advanced undergraduates in mathematics and computer science, as well as towards engineeringstudents who are interested in the applications of computational geometry |
