Note:Advances in technology are demanding ever-increasing mastery over the materials being used: the challenge is to gain a better understanding of their behaviour, and more particularly of the relations between their microstructureand their macroscopic p roperties. This work, of which this is the first volume, aims to provide the means by which this challenge may be met. Starting from the mechanics of deformation, it develops the laws governing macroscopicbehaviour expressed as the constitutive equation s always taking account of the physical phenomena which underlie rheological behaviour. The most recent developments are presented, in particular those concerning heterogeneousmaterials such as metallic alloys, polymers and composites. Each chapter is de voted to one of the major classes of material behaviour. As the subtitles indicate, Volume 1 deals with micro- and macroscopic constitutive behaviour andVolume 2 with damage and fracture mechanics. In part three, free energies for materials with linear memory constitutive relations are comprehensively explored.The new concept of a minimal state is also introduced. Note:Finite element method has been the dominant technique in computational mechanics in the past decades, and it has made significant contributions to the developments in engineering and science. Nevertheless, finite element method isnot well suited to p roblems having severe mesh distortion owing to extremely large deformations of materials, encountering moving discontinuities such as crack propagation along arbitrary and complex paths, involving considerablemeshing and re-meshing in structural optimizat ion problems, or having multidomain of influence in multi-phenomenon physical problems. It is impossible to completely overcome those mesh-related difficulties by a mesh-based method. Thehighly structured nature of finite element approximations imposes se vere penalties in the solutions of those problems. Distinguishing with finite element, finite difference and finite volume methods, meshless method discretizes thecontinuum body only with a set of nodal points and the approximation is constructed entirely in terms of nodes. There is no need of mesh or elements in this method. It does not posses the mesh related difficulties, eliminates at leastpart of the FE structure, and provides an approach with more flexibility in the applications in engineering and s cience. The meshless method started to capture the interest of a broader community of researchers only several years ago,and now it becomes a growing and evolving field. It is showing that this is a very rich area to be explored, and has great promise for many very challenging computational problems. On the one hand, great developments on meshlessmethods have been achieved. On the other hand, there are many aspects of meshless methods that could be benefit from improvements. The emphasis is on the rigorous mathematicalinvestigation of the model , which covers a complete study of the well-posedness of a number of initial-boundary value problems, their reduction to time-dependent boundary integral equations by means of suitable potentialrepresentations, and the solution of the latter in Sobolev sp aces. The analysis, performed in spaces of distributions, is applicable to a wide variety of data with less smoothness than that required in the corresponding classicalproblems, and is very useful for constructing error estimates in numerical computations . The presentation is detailed and clear, yet reasonably concise. This illustrative model was chosen because of its practical importance and someunusual mathematical features, but the solution technique developed in the book can easily be adapted to many other hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations arising in continuum mechanics
