With this information the reader can select thepackages that can help pro cess the analytical tasks with minimum effort and maximum usefulness. The use of Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) is emphasized in this book to further cut downand bend the famous learning curve in learningR. This book is aimed to help you kick-start with analytics including chapters on data visualization, code examples on web analytics and social media analytics, clustering, regression models, text mining, data mining models andforecasting. The book tries to expose the reader to a breadth of business anal ytics topics without burying the user in needless depth. The included references and links allow the reader to pursue business analytics topics. Thisbook is aimed at business analysts with basic programming skills for using R for Business Analytics. Note the scope of the book is neither statistical theory nor graduate level research for statistics, but rather it is for businessanalytics practitioners. Business analytics (BA) refers to the field ofexploration and investigation of data generated by busines ses. Business Intelligence (BI) is the seamless dissemination of information through the organization, which primarily involves business metrics both past and current for the use of decision support in businesses. Data Mining (DM) is the process of discove ring new patterns from large data using algorithms and statistical methods. Todifferentiate between the three, BI is mostly current reports, BA is models to predict and strategizeand DM matches patterns in big data. The R statistical software is the faste st growing analytics platform in the world, and isestablished in both academia and corporations for robustness, reliability and accuracy.

Title:Iris Runge [electronic resource] : A Life at the Crossroads of Mathematics, Science, and Industry
Author(s): Renate Tobies
Date:2012
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book concerns the origins of mathematical problem solving at the internationally active Osram and Telefunken Corporations during the golden years of broadcasting and electron tube research. The woman scientist Iris Runge, who received an interdis ciplinary education at the University of Gttingen, was long employed as the sole mathematical authority at these companies in Berlin. It will be shown how mathematical connections were made between statisticsand quality control, and between physical-chemi cal models and the actual problems of mass production. The organization of industrial laboratories, the relationship between theoretical and experimental work, and the role ofmathematicians in these settings will also be explained. By investigating the so cial, economic, and political conditions that unfolded from the time of the German Empire until the end of the Second World War, the book hopes to build abridge between specialized fields mathematics and engineering and the general culture of a particul ar era. It hopes, furthermore, to build a bridge between the history of science and industry, on the one hand, and the fields ofGender and Womens Studies on the other. Finally, by examining the life and work of numerous industrial researchers, insight wil l be offered into the conditions that enabled a woman to achieve a prominent professional position duringa time when women were typically excluded from the scientific workforce

Title:Environmental Radiation Effects on Mammals [electronic resource] : A Dynamical Modeling Approach
Author(s): Olga A Smirnova
Date:2010
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This text is devoted to the theoretical studies of radiation effects on mammals. It uses the framework of developed deterministic mathematical models to investigate the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation in a wide rangeof doses and dose ra tes on vital body systems including hematopoiesis, small intestine and humoral immunity, as well as on the development of autoimmune diseases. Thus, these models can contribute to the development of the system andquantitative approaches in radiation biolo gy and ecology. This text is also of practical use. Its modeling studies of the dynamics of granulocytopoiesis and thrombocytopoiesis in humans testify to the efficiency of employment of thedeveloped models in the investigation and prediction of radiation effects on these hematopoietic lines. These models, as well as the properly identified models of other vital body systems, could provide a better understanding of theradiation risks to health. The modeling predictions will enable the implementation of mo re effective preventive and protective measures for people residing in areas with elevated radiation background and astronauts on long-term spacemissions. Lastly, the models of the radiation-induced mortality established the theoretical foundations of a n ew individual-based approach to radiation risk assessment. These models thus enable one to predict the mortality dynamics andaverage life-span shortening for individuals and populations exposed to acute and low-level chronic radiation. Because of its theo retical and practical benefits, this book is as useful for academics, scientists and researchers workingin the field of mathematical modeling of biological systems as it is for those working in the fields of radiation biology, ecology and medicine. It is equally useful for Aerospace companies and various corporations that contend withthe problems of environmental protection and radiation safety

Title:Statistical Methods for Human Rights [electronic resource]
Author(s): Jana Asher
David Banks
Fritz J Scheuren
Date:2008
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Human rights issues are shaping the modern world. They define the expectations by which nations are judged and affect the policy of governments, corporations, and foundations. They have set the agenda in prosecutions at theInternational Criminal Cour t at the Hague, funding decisions by the International Monetary Fund, and corporate expansion programs by multinationals. Statistics is central to the modern perspective on human rights. It allows researchersto measure the effect of health care policies, the penetration of educational opportunity, and progress towards gender equality. The new wave of entrepreneurial charities demands impact assessments and documentation of milestoneachievement. Non-governmental organizations need statistics to build cases , conduct surveys, and target their efforts. This book describes the statistics that underlie the social science research in human rights. It includes casestudies, methodology, and research papers that discuss the fundamental measurement issues. It is int ended as an introduction to applied human rights research. The editors of the book are Jana Asher, David Banks, and Fritz Scheuren.Jana Asher led the first national human rights survey in Sierra Leone and provided statistical support for surveys in Iraq, Kosovo, East Timor and Peru. She is the former Senior Program Associate in the Science and Human Rights Programat the American Association for the Advancement of Science. David Banks is a professor of statistics at Duke University, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, recipient of the Roger Herriott Award, and currently editor of theJournal of the American Statistical Association. Fritz Scheuren is the past-president of the American Statistical Association, a Fellow of the ASA, and Vice-Preside nt of Statistics at the National Opinion Research Center at theUniversity of Chicago. He has done human rights statistics in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Peru, Guatemala, East Timor and Columbia, and he advises

Title:Optimal Control Models in Finance [electronic resource] : A New Computational Approach
Author(s): Ping Chen
Sardar M. N Islam
Date:2005
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The determination of optimal financing and investment strategies (optimal capital structure or optimal mix of funds, optimal portfolio choice, etc.) for corporations and the economy are important for efficient allocation ofresources in the economy. O ptimal control methods have useful applications to these areas in finance - some optimization problems in finance include optimal control, involving a dynamic system with switching times in the form ofbang-bang control. Optimal control models for corporat e finance and the economy are presented in this book and the analytical and computational results of these models are also reported. Such computational approaches to the study ofoptimal corporate financing are not well known in the existing literature. Th is book develops a new computational method where switching times are considered as variables in the optimal dynamic financial model represented by a secondorder differential equation. A new computer program named CSTVA (Computer Program for the Switching Time Variables Algorithm), which can compute bang-bang optimal financial models with switching time, is also developed. Optimalfinancing implications of the model results in the form of optimal switching times for changes in financing policies and the op timal financial policies are analyzed
