Note:The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications inbasic science, technolog y and medicine, and, in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emittingelectromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ult raviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible withoutnew approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one s uch novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator -whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativisticparticles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a de vice can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers willbe presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological adv ances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations intocrystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiat ion, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much carehas been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad re adership of researchers and scientist with variousbackgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account.

Note:In recent years, the fabrication of nanomaterials and exploration of their properties have attracted the attention of various scientific disciplines such as biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Although nanoparticulatesystems are of signific ant interest in various scientific and technological areas, there is little known about the safety of these nanoscale objects. It has now been established that the surfaces of nanoparticles are immediatelycovered by biomolecules (e.g. proteins, ions, and enzymes) upon their entrance into a biological medium. This interaction with the biological medium modulates the surface of the nanoparticles, conferring a biological identity totheir surfaces (referred to as a corona), which determines the subsequent cel lular/tissue responses. The new interface between the nanoparticles and the biological medium/proteins, called bio-nano interface, has been veryrarely studied in detail to date, though the interest in this topic is rapidly growing. In this book, the impor tance of the physiochemical characteristics of nanoparticles for the properties of the protein corona is discussed indetail, followed by comprehensive descriptions of the methods for assessing the protein-nanoparticle interactions. The advantages and limi tations of available corona evaluation methods (e.g. spectroscopy methods, mass spectrometry,nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, and differential centrifugal sedimentation) are examined in detail, followed by a discussi on of the possibilities for enhancing the current methods and a call fornew techniques. Note:Diffusion in solids at moderate temperatures is a well-known phenomenon. However, direct experimental evidence about the responsible atomic-scale mechanisms has been scarce, due to difficulties in probing the relevant length-and time-scales. The pres ent thesis deals with the application of X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) for answering such questions. This is an established method for the study of slow dynamics on length-scales of a fewnanometres. The scattered intensity in the diffuse re gime, i.e. corresponding to atomic distances, is very low, however, and so it has so far been considered impossible to use XPCS for this problem. Threefold progress is reported inthis work: It proposes a number of systems selected for high diffuse intensi ty, it optimizes the photon detection and data evaluation procedures, and it establishes theoretical models for interpretating the results. Together theseadvances allowed the first successful atomic-scale XPCS experiment, which elucidated the role of pref erred configurations for atomic jumps in a copper-gold alloy. The growth in available coherent X-ray intensity together withnext-generation X-ray sources will open up a wide field of application for this new method

This NATO Advance Study Institute(ASI) was held in Er ice at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture on 19 through 30 June 2007. The ASI merged the related disciplines of biophysics, biochemistry and molecular structure to treat, detect, and understand emerging infectious diseases. It addressedthe treatment and detection of bioterrorism agents, and focused on critical partner country priorities in bi otechnology, materials, drug discovery and the environment. It provided crossroads discussing new technologies in biophysicsand structural biology, their implications pathogen detection and treatment and their role in partner country development. The 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to thediscoverers of RNA int erference, highlighting just one example of a large number of non-protein coding RNAs. Because non-protein coding RNAs outnumber protein coding genes in mammals and other higher eukaryotes, it is now thought thatthe complexity of organisms is correlated w ith the fraction of their genome that encodes non-protein coding RNAs. Essential biological processes as diverse as cell differentiation, suppression of infecting viruses and parasitictransposons, higher-level organization of eukaryotic chromosomes, and g ene expression itself are found to largely be directed by non-protein coding RNAs. The biophysical study of these RNAs employs X-ray crystallography, NMR, ensembleand single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy, optical tweezers, cryo-electron microscopy, a nd other quantitative tools. Note:This volume is a collection of articles from the proceedings of the ISSBMR 7th Course: Structure and Biophysics - New Technologies for Current Challenges in Biology and Beyond. This NATO Advanced Institute (ASI) was held in Ericeat the Ettore Majoran a Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture on 22 June through 3 July 2005. The ASI brought together a diverse group of experts in the fields of Structural Biology, Biophysics and Physics. Prominent lecturers,from seven different countries, and student s from around the world participated in the NATO ASI organized by Professors Joseph Puglisi (Stanford University, USA) and Alexander Arseniev (Moscow, RU). Advances in nuclear magneticresonance spectroscopy (NMR) and x-ray crystallography have allowed the three-dimensional structures of many biological macromolecules and their complexes, including the ribosome and RNA polymerase to be solved. Fundamental principlesof NMR spectroscopy and dynamics, x-ray crystallography, computation and experimental dynami cs were taught in the context of important biological applications. The ASI addressed the treatment and detection of bioterrorism agents, andfocused on critical partner country priorities in biotechnology, materials and drug discovery. The range of topics represent the diversity of critical problems between structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics, in which lies thefertile ground of drug development, biotechnology and new materials. The individual articles represent the state of the art in each are a and provide a guide to the original literature in this rapidly developing field

Note:Optical anomalies in crystals are puzzles that collectively constituted the greatest unsolved problems in crystallography in the 19th Century. The most common anomaly is a discrepancy between a crystals symmetry as determinedby its shape or by X-ray analysis, and that determined by monitoring the polarization state of traversing light. These discrepancies were perceived as a great impediment to the development of the sciences of crystals on the basis ofCuries Symmetry Principle, the grand organizing idea in the physical sciences to emerge in the latter half of the 19th Century. Optically Anomalous Crystals begins with an historical introduction covering the contributions ofBrewster, Biot, Mallard, Brauns, Tamman, and many other distinguished crystall ographers. From this follows a tutorial in crystal optics. Further chapters discuss the two main mechanisms of optical dissymmetry: 1. the piezo-opticeffect, and 2. the kinetic ordering of atoms. The text then tackles complex, inhomogeneous crystals, and the complex optical properties resulting from the superposition of anomalies having various etiologies. The book treats theliterature comprehensively, but uses illustrations from the authors laboratories as the subjects of detailed analyses. This is an in valuable text for crystallographers, mineralogists, and petrologists interested in the growth ofminerals and synthetic crystals, and their optical properties. It is also ideally suited to students of optical mineralogy, professional scientists and enginee rs as well as historians of science
