Note:This book presents a collection of texts by the German physicist and philosopher Carl Friedrich von Weizscker (1912-2007), for use in seminars on the history, epistemology and structure of physics. Most texts appear in Englishfor the first time. Weiz scker became famous through his works in physics, mainly in the early development of nuclear physics. Later he would also become well known as a philosopher and analyst of contemporary culture. Texts includethe original publications of the Weizscker-Bethe formula of nuclear masses and the Bethe-Weizscker cycle, which explains the source of energy in the sun both were developed by Bethe at the same time and independentlyof Weizscker. Further texts deal with Weizsckers explanation of the origin of planets, his explanation of the time arrow in Statistical Mechanics and his analyses of Quantum Mechanics and the structure of physics ingeneral

Title:The Art of Science [electronic resource] : From Perspective Drawing to Quantum Randomness
Author(s): Rossella Lupacchini
Annarita Angelini
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Like linear perspective, complex numbers and probability are notable discoveries of the Renaissance. History has been quick to recognize the crucial impact of linear perspective on painting, but reluctant to acknowledge theimportance of complex numbe rs and probability. Both were treated with a great deal of suspicion by the scientific establishment and overlooked for many years. It was only in the twentieth century, when quantum theory defined the notionof complex probability amplitude, that complex numbers merged with probability and transformed the image of the physical world. From a theoretical point of view, however, the space opened to painting by linear perspective and thespace opened to science by complex numbers are equally valuable and share significant characteristics. By exploring that common ground, The Art of Science will lead the reader to complement Leonardos vision of painting as a scienceand to see science as an art. Its aim is to restore a visual dimension to mathematical sciences an element dulled, if not obscured, by historians, philosophers, and scientists themselves

Title:Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam [electronic resource] : Research, Teaching, Life
Author(s): Alexander Pechenkin
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This biography of the famous Soviet physicist Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam (1889-1944), who became a Professor at Moscow State University in 1925, describes his contributions to both physics and technology, as well as discussingthe scientific communi ty which formed around him, usually called the Mandelstam school. Mandelstams life story is thereby placed in its proper cultural context. The following more general issues are taken under consideration: theimpact of German scientific culture on Russian s cience the problems and fates of Russian intellectuals during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary years the formation of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and transformation of thesystem of higher education in the USSR during the 1920's and 1930's.The a uthor shows that Mandelstams fundamental writings and his lectures notes allow to reconstruct his philosophy of science and his approach to the social andethical functions of science and science education. That reconstruction is enhanced through extensive use of hitherto unpublished archival material as well as the transcripts of personal interviews conducted by the author

Title:Complex Numbers from A to ... Z [electronic resource]
Author(s): Titu Andreescu
Dorin Andrica
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:Boston, MA : Birkhuser Boston : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:It is impossible to imagine modern mathematics without complex numbers. The second edition of Complex Numbers from A to Z introduces the reader to this fascinating subject that, from the time of L. Euler, has become one ofthe most utilized ideas in mathematics. The exposition concentrates on key concepts and then elementary results concerning these numbers. The reader learns how complex numbers can be used to solve algebraic equations and to understandthe geometric interpretation of complex numbers and the operations involving them. The theoretical parts of the book are augmented with rich exercises and problems at various levels of difficulty. Many new problems and solutions havebeen added in this second edition. A special feature of the book is th e last chapter, a selection of outstanding Olympiad and other important mathematical contest problems solved by employing the methods already presented. The bookreflects the unique experience of the authors. It distills a vast mathematical literature, mos t of which is unknown to the western public, and captures the essence of an abundant problem culture. The target audience includesundergraduates, high school students and their teachers, mathematical contestants (such as those training for Olympiads or th e W. L. Putnam Mathematical Competition) and their coaches, as well as anyone interested in essentialmathematics

Title:High Energy Astrophysics [electronic resource] : An Introduction
Author(s): Thierry J.-L Courvoisier
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, andhours (in quasars, X -ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox whenone thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the lastdecades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims atproviding astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physicalprocesses are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics plays a crucial role. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by theirobservational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here

Note:Human history is also the record of our fascination with the sky, and to look upwards is to follow in the steps of such greats as Galileo and Newton. What they and others once saw in the heavens for the first time, amateurastronomers can discover ane w using this guide to twenty-five of the greatest journeys through space. Starting with our most visible companion the Moon, each chapter offers a step-by-step walk-through of famous astronomicalobservations from the history of science. Beginning with th e easiest targets, sometimes even accessible with the naked eye, the challenges become progressively more difficult. Beginner astronomers and more experienced hobbyists alikecan reacquaint themselves with the wonders of our fellow planets and even reach f ar beyond our own solar system to touch on such incredible phenomena as the birth of new stars in nebula systems and the deceptive nothingness of blackholes. The would-be astronaut can spy the International Space Station in orbit with binoculars or the do omsday prophet can search for new comets. Along the way, easily digestible mini-lessons inform the reader on the initial discoveryof then-new celestial bodies and subsequent advances in our understanding of the cosmos. Relying only on binoculars or small astronomical telescopes for most of the observations, and including background on the science of eachphenomenon, this exploration of the skies is easy to follow and packed with useful information and fun tidbits. These practical observations put us in co ntact with all the history and culture surrounding them: through scientificspeculation and literature to those first fuzzy images made in 1959 by the Russian space probe Luna 3

Title:Iris Runge [electronic resource] : A Life at the Crossroads of Mathematics, Science, and Industry
Author(s): Renate Tobies
Date:2012
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book concerns the origins of mathematical problem solving at the internationally active Osram and Telefunken Corporations during the golden years of broadcasting and electron tube research. The woman scientist Iris Runge, who received an interdis ciplinary education at the University of Gttingen, was long employed as the sole mathematical authority at these companies in Berlin. It will be shown how mathematical connections were made between statisticsand quality control, and between physical-chemi cal models and the actual problems of mass production. The organization of industrial laboratories, the relationship between theoretical and experimental work, and the role ofmathematicians in these settings will also be explained. By investigating the so cial, economic, and political conditions that unfolded from the time of the German Empire until the end of the Second World War, the book hopes to build abridge between specialized fields mathematics and engineering and the general culture of a particul ar era. It hopes, furthermore, to build a bridge between the history of science and industry, on the one hand, and the fields ofGender and Womens Studies on the other. Finally, by examining the life and work of numerous industrial researchers, insight wil l be offered into the conditions that enabled a woman to achieve a prominent professional position duringa time when women were typically excluded from the scientific workforce

Title:Complexity, Cognition and the City [electronic resource]
Author(s): Juval Portugali
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Complexity, Cognition and the City aims at a deeper understanding of urbanism, while invoking, on an equal footing, the contributions both the hard and soft sciences have made, and are still making, when grappling with the manyissues and facets of re gional planning and dynamics. In this work, the author goes beyond merely seeing the city as a self-organized, emerging pattern of some collective interaction between many stylized urban agents he makesthe crucial step of attributing cognition to his age nts and thus raises, for the first time, the question on how to deal with a complex system composed of many interacting complex agents in clearly defined settings. Accordingly, theauthor eventually addresses issues of practical relevance for urban planner s and decision makers. The book unfolds its message in a largely nontechnical manner, so as to provide a broad interdisciplinary readership with insights, ideas, and other stimuli to encourage further research with the twofold aim of further pushing back the boundaries of complexity science and emphasizing the all-important interrelation of hard and soft sciences in recognizing thecognitive sciences as another necessary ingredient for meaningful urban studies

Note:Steps forward in mathematics often reverberate in other scientific disciplines, and give rise to innovative conceptual developments or find surprising technological applications. This volume brings to the forefront some of theproponents of the mathem atics of the twentieth century, who have put at our disposal new and powerful instruments for investigating the reality around us. The portraits present people who have impressive charisma and wide-rangingcultural interests, who are passionate about defen ding the importance of their own research, are sensitive to beauty, and attentive to the social and political problems of their times. What we have sought to document is mathematicscentral position in the culture of our day. Space has been made not only f or the great mathematicians but also for literary texts, including contributions by two apparent interlopers, Robert Musil and Raymond Queneau, for whommathematical concepts represented a valuable tool for resolving the struggle between soul and precision .

Title:Gsta Mittag-Leffler [electronic resource] : A Man of Conviction
Author(s): Arild Stubhaug
Date:2010
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Gsta Mittag-Leffler (18461927) played a significant role on the world stage as both a scientist and entrepreneur. Regarded as the father of Swedish mathematics, his influence extended far beyond his chosen field because ofhis extensive network of int ernational contacts in science, business, and the arts. His social and professional circles included such luminaries as Selma Lagerlf, Albert Einstein, Sonya Kovalevsky, Alfred Nobel, Karl Weierstrass,Henri Poincar, and Marie Curie. (He was instrumental i n seeing to it that the latter was awarded the Nobel Prize, not once but twice.) One of Mittag-Lefflers major accomplishments was the founding of the journal Acta Mathematicain 1882. Today the journal is still published by Institut Mittag-Leffler and Swed ens Royal Academy of Sciences, and it continues to be one of the most prestigious journals in mathematics. Arild Stubhaugs research for thismonumental biography of the Swedish mathematician relied on a wealth of primary and secondary resources, including more than 30000 letters that are part of the Mittag-Leffler archives. Written in a lucid and compelling manner, thebiography contains many hitherto unknown facts about Mittag-Lefflers personal life and professional endeavors. It will be of great interest to both mathematicians and general readers interested in science and culture

Title:Geometry Revealed [electronic resource] : A Jacob's Ladder to Modern Higher Geometry
Author(s): Marcel Berger
Date:2010
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Both classical geometry and modern differential geometry have been active subjects of research throughout the 20th century and lie at the heart of many recent advances in mathematics and physics. The underlying motivating conceptfor the present book is that it offers readers the elements of a modern geometric culture by means of a whole series of visually appealing unsolved (or recently solved) problems that require the creation of concepts and tools ofvarying abstraction. Starting with such natural, classical objects as lines, planes, circles, spheres, polygons, polyhedra, curves, surfaces, convex sets, etc., crucial ideas and above all abstract concepts needed for attaining theresults are elucidated. These are conceptual notions, each built above t he preceding and permitting an increase in abstraction, represented metaphorically by Jacob's ladder with its rungs: the 'ladder' in the Old Testament, thatangels ascended and descended... In all this, the aim of the book is to demonstrate to readers the unceasingly renewed spirit of geometry and that even so-called elementary geometry is very much alive and at the very heart of thework of numerous contemporary mathematicians. It is also shown that there are innumerable paths yet to be explored and concep ts to be created. The book is visually rich and inviting, so that readers may open it at random places andfind much pleasure throughout according their own intuitions and inclinations. Marcel Berger is the author of numerous successful books on geometry, this book once again is addressed to all students and teachers of mathematics with anaffinity for geometry

Note:This volume is a collection of articles from the proceedings of the International School of Structural Biology and Magnetic Resonance 8th Course: Biophysics and the Challenges of Emerging Threats. This NATO Advance Study Institute(ASI) was held in Er ice at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture on 19 through 30 June 2007. The ASI brought together a diverse group of experts who bridged the fields of virology and biology, biophysics, chemistry and physics. Prominent lecturers a nd students from around the world representant a total of 24 countries participated in the NATO ASI organized by Professors Joseph Puglisi (Stanford University, USA) and Alexander Arseniev(Moscow, RU). The central hypothesis underlying this ASI was that i nterdisciplinary research, merging principles of physics, chemistry and biology, can drive new discovery in detecting and fighting bioterrorism agents, lead to cleanerenvironments, and help propel development in NATO partner countries. The ASI merged the related disciplines of biophysics, biochemistry and molecular structure to treat, detect, and understand emerging infectious diseases. It addressedthe treatment and detection of bioterrorism agents, and focused on critical partner country priorities in bi otechnology, materials, drug discovery and the environment. It provided crossroads discussing new technologies in biophysicsand structural biology, their implications pathogen detection and treatment and their role in partner country development. The ASI allowed deep and wide-ranging discussion between lecturers and students, providing overviews of keyareas and links between them. The range of topics represent the diversity of critical problems between structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics, in w hich lies the fertile ground of drug development, biotechnology and newmaterials

Note:Typical travel guides have sections on architecture, art, literature, music and cinema. Rarely are any science-related sites identified. For example, a current travel guide for Germany contains one tidbit on science: Einstein isidentified as the most famous citizen of Ulm. By contrast, this travel guide walks a tourist through Berlin and identifies where Max Planck started the quantum revolution, where Einstein lived and gave his early talks on generalrelativity, and where, across the street, Einstei ns books were burned by the Nazis. Or, if you are walking in Paris, this guide tells you where radioactivity was discovered and where radium was discovered. Scientific discoveries ofthe past, like art of the past, has shaped life in the 21st century. From this travel guide, a tourist will learn what other guides leave out

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:All over the world sport plays a prominent role in society: as a leisure activity for many, as an ingredient of culture, as a business and as a matter of national prestige in such major events as the World Cup in soccer or theOlympic Games. Hence, it is not surprising that science has entered the realm of sports, and, in particular, that computer simulation has become highly relevant in recent years. This is explored in this book by choosing five differentsports as examples, demonstrating that comput ational science and engineering (CSE) can make essential contributions to research on sports topics on both the fundamental level and, eventually, by supporting athletes performance

Title:Weak Links [electronic resource] : The Universal Key to the Stability of Networks and Complex Systems
Author(s): Peter Csermely
Date:2009
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource

Note:How can our societies be stabilized in a crisis? Why can we enjoy and understand Shakespeare? Why are fruitflies uniform? How do omnivorous eating habits aid our survival? What makes the Mona Lisas smile beautiful? How dowomen keep our social structu res intact? Could there possibly be a single answer to all these questions? This book shows that the statement: weak links stabilize complex systems provides the key to understanding each of theseintriguing puzzles, and many others too. The author (recip ient of several distinguished science communication prizes) uses weak (low affinity, low probability) interactions as a thread to introduce a vast variety of networks fromproteins to economics and ecosystems. Many people, from Nobel Laureates to high-scho ol students have helped to make the book understandable to all interested readers. This unique book and the ideas it develops will have a significantimpact on many, seemingly diverse, fields of study. A very personal, engaging, and unique book that will a ppeal to readers and get them thinking Steve Strogatz An adventurous, entertainingly eclectic and rich work both for experts andlaymen Lszl-Albert Barabsi This masterpiece should serve as an example of how science can be discussed Gyrgy Buzski Outstanding - I wish more books were written this way Daniel J. Note:Imagine algebra class meets The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Meet JJ, an unusual character with a unique vantage position from which he can measure and monitor humanitys progress. Armed with a device that compels allaround it to tell the truth, JJ offers a satirical evaluation of our attitudes to numeracy and logic, touching upon several aspects of life on Earth along the way, from the criminal justice system and peoples use of language tohighway driving and modern art. A collection of mathematica lly-flavored stories and jokes, interlaced with puzzles, paradoxes and problems, fuse together in an entertaining, free-flowing narrative that will engage and amuse anyone withan interest in the issues confronting society today. JJ demonstrates how a lack of elementary mathematical knowledge can taint our work and general thinking and reflects upon the importance of what is arguably our most valuable weaponagainst ignorance: a sound mathematical education. What is JJs prognosis for our future? Theres only one way to find out... Numbers, logic, human behavior and aliens: this unique book blends them all into a captivatingnarrative of serious talk and satire, where wit and scholarly details are counterpointed by instructive puzzles and mathematical fun. A m ust read for anybody who appreciates humor and culture. Stanislav Potapenko, Department ofCivil and Environmental Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada ... a real delight. Constanda has managed to intertwine stories, puzzles, logic and some very ric h mathematics concepts into a very readable, enjoyable novel... Ibelieve this book should be in the personal library of every high school mathematics teacher. Tom Becvar, St Louis University High School, USA a highly readable, unique and fascinating combi nation of humor, mathematics andsocial commentary that is factual, educational and, more importantly, understandable. Given what is taking place in todays society, J.J

Title:The Universe Before the Big Bang [electronic resource] Cosmology and String Theory
Author(s): Maurizio Gasperini
Date:2008
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Terms such as expanding Universe, big bang, and initial singularity, are nowadays part of our common language. The idea that the Universe we observe today originated from an enormous explosion (big bang) is now wellknown and widely accepted, at all l evels, in modern popular culture. But what happens to the Universe before the big bang? And would it make any sense at all to ask such a question? In fact, recent progress in theoretical physics, andin particular in String Theory, suggests answers to the above questions, providing us with mathematical tools able in principle to reconstruct the history of the Universe even for times before the big bang. In the emerging cosmologicalscenario the Universe, at the epoch of the big bang, instead of being a new born baby was actually a rather aged creature in the middle of its possibly infinitely enduring evolution. The aim of this book is to convey thispicture in non-technical language accessible also to non-specialists. The author, himself a leading cosmologis t, draws attention to ongoing and future observations that might reveal relics of an era before the big bang

Title:Jacopo da Firenzes Tractatus Algorismi and Early Italian Abbacus Culture [electronic resource]
Author(s): Jens Hyrup
Date:2007
Publisher:Basel : Birkhuser Basel
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:In the city republics of Renaissance Italy, it was a common practice among the merchant class to send sons for a two-year course of study at an abbacus school, where they learned practical, mostly commercial mathematics, known as abbaco. From this sch ool institution, several hundred manuscripts survive, all in Italian, often containing not only what the masters needed in their teaching but also algebra or other advanced mathematical material. A signalfeature of the book by Jens Hyrup is the first tran slation of one of these abbacus manuscripts into English. The abbacus books have long been supposed to be reduced versions of Leonardo Fibonaccis Liber abbaci. Analysis of earlyabbacus books, not least of the first specimen treating of algebra Jacopo da Firenzes Tractatus algorismi from 1307 shows instead that abbacus mathematics was an exponentof a more widespread culture of commercialmathematics, already known by Fibonacci, and probably flourishing in Provence and/or Catalonia before it reached Italy. Abbacus algebra eventually the main inspiration for the algebraic breakthrough of the 16th and 17th centuries was inspired from a Romance-speaking region outside Italy, most likely located in the Provenal-Catalan area, and ultimately from a similar prac titioners level of Arabic mathematics. The book contains, along with the Englishtranslation, an edition of Jacopos Tractatus and a commentary analyzing Jacopos mathematics and its links to Provenal, Catalan, Arabic, Indian and Latin medieval mathematics. It will provide historians of mathematics andmathematics teachers with a new perspective on a period and on processes which eventually reshaped the whole mathematical enterprise in the 17th century

Note:Euler was not only by far the most productive mathematician in the history of mankind, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time. He attained, like only a few scholars, a degree of popularity and fame which may well becompared with that of Ga lilei, Newton, or Einstein. Moreover he was a cosmopolitan in the truest sense of the word he lived during his first twenty years in Basel, was active altogether for more than thirty years in Petersburg and fora quarter of a century in Berlin. Leonhard Eu lers unusually rich life and broadly diversified activity in the immediate vicinity of important personalities which have made history, may well justify an exposition. This book is basedin part on unpublished sources and comes right out of the current res earch on Euler. It is entirely free of formulae as it has been written for a broad audience with interests in the history of culture and science
