Author(s): Lennart Bengtsson
R.-M Bonnet
M Calisto
G Destouni
R Gurney
J Johannessen
Y Kerr
W.A Lahoz
M Rast
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book gives a comprehensive presentation of our present understanding of the Earth's Hydrological cycle and the problems, consequences and impacts that go with this topic. Water is a central component in the Earth's system. It is indispensable for life on Earth in its present form and influences virtually every aspect of our planet's life support system. On relatively short time scales, atmospheric water vapor interacts with the atmospheric circulationand is crucial in forming the Earth's climate zones. Water vapor is the most powerful of the greenhouse gases and serves to enhance the tropospheric temperature. The dominant part of available water on Earth resides in the oceans.Parts are locked up in the land ice on Greenland and Antarctica and a s maller part is estimated to exist as groundwater. If all the ice over the land and all the glaciers were to melt, the sea level would rise by some 80 m. Incomparison, the total amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is small it amounts to ~ 25 kg/m2, or the equivalent of 25 mm water for each column of air. Yet atmospheric water vapor is crucial for the Earths energy balance. Thebook gives an up to date presentation of the present knowledge. Previously published in Surveys in Geophysics, Volume 35, No. 3, 2014

Author(s): Alessandra Celletti
Ugo Locatelli
Tommaso Ruggeri
Elisabetta Strickland
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In 2013 several scientific activities have been devoted to mathematical researches for the study of planet Earth. The current volume presents a selection of the highly topical issues presented at the workshop MathematicalModels and Methods for Planet Earth, held in Roma (Italy), in May 2013. The fields of interest span from impacts of dangerous asteroids to the safeguard from space debris, from climatic changes to monitoring geological events, fromthe study of tumor growth to sociological problems. I n all these fields the mathematical studies play a relevant role as a tool for the analysis of specific topics and as an ingredient of multidisciplinary problems. To investigatethese problems we will see many different mathematical tools at work: just to mention some, stochastic processes, PDE, normal forms, chaos theory

Title:XML and Web Technologies for Data Sciences with R [electronic resource]
Author(s): Deborah Nolan
Duncan Temple Lang
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Web technologies are increasingly relevant to scientists working with data, for both accessing data and creating rich dynamic and interactive displays. The XML and JSON data formats are widely used in Web services, regular Webpages and JavaScript cod e, and visualization formats such as SVG and KML for Google Earth and Google Maps. In addition, scientists use HTTP and other network protocols to scrape data from Web pages, access REST and SOAP Web Services, and interact with NoSQL databases and text sea rch applications. This book provides a practical hands-on introduction to these technologies, including high-level functions the authors have developed for data scientists. It describesstrategies and approaches for extracting data from HTML, XML, and JSON formats and how to programmatically access data from the Web. Along with these general skills, the authors illustrate several applications that are relevant todata scientists, such as reading and writing spreadsheet documents both locally and via GoogleD ocs, creating interactive and dynamic visualizations, displaying spatial-temporal displays with Google Earth, and generating code fromdescriptions of data structures to read and write data. These topics demonstrate the rich possibilities and opportunities to do new things with these modern technologies. The book contains many examples and case-studies thatreaders can use directly and adapt to their own work. The authors have focused on the integration of these technologies with the R statistical computing environment. However, the ideas and skills presented here are more general, and statisticians who use other computing environments will also find them relevant to their work. Deborah Nolan is Professor of Statistics at University of California, Berkeley. Duncan Temple Lang is Associate Professor of Statisticsat University of California, Davis and has been a member of both the S and R development teams

Note:Tutorials on Mssbauer Spectroscopy Since the discovery of the Mssbauer Effect many excellent books have been published for researchers and for doctoral and master level students. However, there appears to be no textbookavailable for final year bachel or students, nor for people working in industry who have received only basic courses in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, chemistry and materials science. The challenge of thisbook is to give an introduction to Mssbauer Spectroscop y for this level. The ultimate goal of this book is to give this audience not only a scientific introduction to the technique, but also to demonstrate in an attractive way thepower of Mssbauer Spectroscopy in many fields of science, in order to create int erest among the readers in joining the community of Mssbauer spectroscopists. This is particularly important at times where in many Mssbauerlaboratories succession is at stake

Note:This study shows that the Caspian Sea level time series possess long range dependence even after removing linear trends, based on analyses of the Hurst statistic, the sample autocorrelation functions, and the periodogram of theseries. Forecasting per formance of ARMA, ARIMA, ARFIMA and Trend Line-ARFIMA (TL-ARFIMA) combination models are investigated. The forecast confidence bands and the forecast updating methodology, provided for ARIMA models in theliterature, are modified for the ARFIMA models. Sam ple autocorrelation functions are utilized to estimate the differencing lengths of the ARFIMA models. The confidence bands of the forecasts are estimated using the probabilitydensities of the residuals without assuming a known distribution. There are no l ong-term sea level records for the region of Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysias Sabah-Sarawak northern region of Borneo Island. In such cases the GlobalClimate Model (GCM) projections for the 21st century can be downscaled to the Malaysia region by means o f regression techniques, utilizing the short records of satellite altimeters in this region against the GCM projections during amutual observation period. This bookwill be useful for engineers and researchers working in the areas of applied statistics, cl imate change, sea level change, time series analysis, applied earth sciences, and nonlinear dynamics

Note:The proceedings represent the state of knowledge in the area of algorithmic differentiation (AD). The 31 contributed papers presented at the AD2012 conference cover the application of AD to many areas in science and engineeringas well as aspects of A D theory and its implementation in tools. For all papers the referees, selected from the program committee and the greater community, as well as the editors have emphasized accessibility of the presented ideasalso to non-AD experts. In the AD tools arena new implementations are introduced covering, for example, Java and graphical modeling environments or join the set of existing tools for Fortran. New developments in AD algorithms targetthe efficiency of matrix-operation derivatives, detection and exploit ation of sparsity, partial separability, the treatment of nonsmooth functions, and other high-level mathematical aspects of the numerical computations to bedifferentiated. Applications stem from the Earth sciences, nuclear engineering, fluid dynamics, and chemistry, to name just a few. In many cases the applications in a given area of science or engineering share characteristics thatrequire specific approaches to enable AD capabilities or provide an opportunity for efficiency gains in the derivative compu tation. The description of these characteristics and of the techniques for successfully using AD should makethe proceedings a valuable source of information for users of AD tools

Title:Why Society is a Complex Matter [electronic resource] : Meeting Twenty-first Century Challenges with a New Kind of Science
Author(s): Philip Ball
Date:2012
Edition:1
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Society is complicated. But this book argues that this does not place it beyond the reach of a science that can help to explain and perhaps even to predict social behaviour. As a system made up of many interacting agents people, groups, institutions and governments, as well as physical and technological structures such as roads and computer networks society can be regarded as a complex system. In recent years, scientists have made great progress inunderstanding how such complex systems operate, rang ing from animal populations to earthquakes and weather. These systems show behaviours that cannot be predicted or intuited by focusing on the individual components, but which emergespontaneously as a consequence of their interactions: they are said to be self-organized. Attempts to direct or manage such emergent properties generally reveal that top-down approaches, which try to dictate a particularoutcome, are ineffectual, and that what is needed instead is a bottom-up approach that aims to guide self-org anization towards desirable states. This book shows how some of these ideas from the science of complexity can beapplied to the study and management of social phenomena, including traffic flow, economic markets, opinion formation and the growth and struct ure of cities. Building on these successes, the book argues that the complex-systems view ofthe social sciences has now matured sufficiently for it to be possible, desirable and perhaps essential to attempt a grander objective: to integrate these efforts into a unified scheme for studying, understanding and ultimatelypredicting what happens in the world we have made. Such a scheme would require the mobilization and collaboration of many different research communities, and would allow society and its inter actions with the physical environment to beexplored through realistic models and large-scale data collection and analysis. It should enable us to find new and effective solutions
