Stephanie Langhoff
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The presentations at this NASA-hosted Symposium in honor of Mino Freund will touch upon the fields, to which his prolific mind has made significant contributions. These include low temperature physics, cosmology, andnanotechnology with its wide-rangi ng applicability to material science, neuroscience, Earth sciences and satellite technology. To learn more about Minos career you can download the Tribute, which outlines his journey from (i) low-temperature ph ysics and superconductivity at the ETH Zrich to (ii) building one remarkable milliKelvin refrigerator for the US-Japan IRTS missionat UC Berkeley and ISAS in Japan to (iii) a decade in cosmology, to (iv) being on the micro-bolometer team at NASA Goddard f or the HAWC instrument on SOFIA, to (v) developing at AFRL the nanotechnology portfolio for the entire AirForce. This was followed by six years at the NASA Ames Research Center, where Mino formulated his far-ahead ideas about swarms of capable nanosats ci rcling the Earth, which have since started to become a reality. He engaged in abroad range of nanotechnology projects, including novel applications in neuroscience well before he himself was struck by the deadly brain tumor

Title:XML and Web Technologies for Data Sciences with R [electronic resource]
Author(s): Deborah Nolan
Duncan Temple Lang
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Web technologies are increasingly relevant to scientists working with data, for both accessing data and creating rich dynamic and interactive displays. The XML and JSON data formats are widely used in Web services, regular Webpages and JavaScript cod e, and visualization formats such as SVG and KML for Google Earth and Google Maps. In addition, scientists use HTTP and other network protocols to scrape data from Web pages, access REST and SOAP Web Services, and interact with NoSQL databases and text sea rch applications. This book provides a practical hands-on introduction to these technologies, including high-level functions the authors have developed for data scientists. It describesstrategies and approaches for extracting data from HTML, XML, and JSON formats and how to programmatically access data from the Web. Along with these general skills, the authors illustrate several applications that are relevant todata scientists, such as reading and writing spreadsheet documents both locally and via GoogleD ocs, creating interactive and dynamic visualizations, displaying spatial-temporal displays with Google Earth, and generating code fromdescriptions of data structures to read and write data. These topics demonstrate the rich possibilities and opportunities to do new things with these modern technologies. The book contains many examples and case-studies thatreaders can use directly and adapt to their own work. The authors have focused on the integration of these technologies with the R statistical computing environment. However, the ideas and skills presented here are more general, and statisticians who use other computing environments will also find them relevant to their work. Deborah Nolan is Professor of Statistics at University of California, Berkeley. Duncan Temple Lang is Associate Professor of Statisticsat University of California, Davis and has been a member of both the S and R development teams

Title:Mssbauer Spectroscopy [electronic resource] : Tutorial Book
Author(s): Yutaka Yoshida
Guido Langouche
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Tutorials on Mssbauer Spectroscopy Since the discovery of the Mssbauer Effect many excellent books have been published for researchers and for doctoral and master level students. However, there appears to be no textbookavailable for final year bachel or students, nor for people working in industry who have received only basic courses in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, chemistry and materials science. The challenge of thisbook is to give an introduction to Mssbauer Spectroscop y for this level. The ultimate goal of this book is to give this audience not only a scientific introduction to the technique, but also to demonstrate in an attractive way thepower of Mssbauer Spectroscopy in many fields of science, in order to create int erest among the readers in joining the community of Mssbauer spectroscopists. This is particularly important at times where in many Mssbauerlaboratories succession is at stake

Title:Full Meridian of Glory [electronic resource] : Perilous Adventures in the Competition to Measure the Earth
Author(s): Paul Murdin
Date:2009
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The Paris Meridian is the name of the line running north-south through the astronomical observatory in Paris. One of the original intentions behind the founding of the Paris Observatory was to determine and measure this line. Tothat end, the French g overnment financed the Paris Academy of Sciences to do so in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries employing both astronomers people who study and measure the stars and geodesists people who studyand measure the Earth. This book is about what they di d and why. Full Meridian of Glory is the first English language presentation of this historical material in its entirety. It is an attractively written story of the scientists whocreated the Paris Meridian. They collaborated and worked together in allianc es, like scientists everywhere they also split into warring factions. They transcended national and political disputes, as scientists do now, their eyes fixedon ideals of accuracy, truth and objectivity. Yet also when their work served national interests they were sometimes less than neutral, and if their work was questioned they sometimes blindly descended into petty politics. This booktells the story of the adventures in France, in Spain, in Lapland and in Ecuador of the scientists who worked through re volution, war, rebellion, piracy, fire, shipwreck, blockade, snow, tropical heat, kidnapping, murder and turbulentlove affairs to pursue a problem of map making. They turned that practical problem into a crucial scientific test of one of the most importan t intellectual problems of their time Newtons theory of universal gravitation. Theirwork changed their own lives, affected the course of science and politics, and left its mark on the landscape, the art and the literature of history and in our own age
