Title:Nonlinear Analysis [electronic resource] : Approximation Theory, Optimization and Applications
Author(s): Qamrul Hasan Ansari
Date:2014
Publisher:New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Many of our daily-life problems can be written in the form of an optimization problem. Therefore, solution methods are needed to solve such problems. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is not always easy to find the exactsolution. However, app roximate solutions can be found. The theory of the best approximation is applicable in a variety of problems arising in nonlinear functional analysis and optimization. This book highlights interesting aspects ofnonlinear analysis and optimization together with many applications in the areas of physical and social sciences including engineering. It is immensely helpful for young graduates and researchers who are pursuing research in thisfield, as it provides abundant research resources for researchers and post-doctoral fellows. This will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who works in the field of applied mathematics, economics and engineering

Title:Optimal Mixture Experiments [electronic resource]
Author(s): B.K Sinha
N.K Mandal
Manisha Pal
P Das
Date:2014
Publisher:New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The book dwells mainly on the optimality aspects of mixture designs. As mixture models are a special case of regression models, a general discussion on regression designs has been presented, which includes topics like continuousdesigns, de la Garza p henomenon, Loewner order domination, Equivalence theorems for different optimality criteria and standard optimality results for single variable polynomial regression and multivariate linear and quadraticregression models. This is followed by a review of t he available literature on estimation of parameters in mixture models. Based on recent research findings, the volume also introduces optimal mixture designs for estimation of optimummixing proportions in different mixture models, which include Scheffs qua dratic model, Darroch-Waller model, log- contrast model, mixture-amount models, random coefficient models and multi-response model. Robust mixture designsand mixture designs in blocks have been also reviewed. Moreover, some applications of mixture designs in areas like agriculture, pharmaceutics and food and beverages have been presented. Familiarity with the basic concepts of designand analysis of experiments, along with the concept of optimality criteria are desirable prerequisites for a clear understan ding of the book. It is likely to be helpful to both theoreticians and practitioners working in the area ofmixture experiments

Title:Applied Data-Centric Social Sciences [electronic resource] : Concepts, Data, Computation, and Theory
Author(s): Aki-Hiro Sato
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Applied data-centric social sciences aim to develop both methodology and practical applications of various fields of social sciences and businesses with rich data. Specifically, in the social sciences, a vast amount of data onhuman activities may be useful for understanding collective human nature. In this book, the author introduces several mathematical techniques for handling a huge volume of data and analysing collective human behaviour. The book isconstructed from data-oriented investigation, wit h mathematical methods and expressions used for dealing with data for several specific problems. The fundamental philosophy underlying the book is that both mathematical and physicalconcepts are determined by the purposes of data analysis. This philosophy is shown throughout exemplar studies of several fields in socio-economic systems. From a data-centric point of view, the author proposes a concept that maychange peoples minds and cause them to start thinking from the basis of data. Several goals underli e the chapters of the book. The first is to describe mathematical and statistical methods for data analysis, and toward that end theauthor delineates methods with actual data in each chapter. The second is to find a cyber-physical link between data and da ta-generating mechanisms, as data are always provided by some kind of data-generating process in the real world. The third goal is to provide an impetus for the concepts and methodology set forth in this book to be applied to socio-economic systems

Title:Scientific Computing with MATLAB and Octave [electronic resource]
Author(s): Alfio Quarteroni
Fausto Saleri
Paola Gervasio
Date:2014
Edition:4th ed. 2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer-based solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros, the extrema, and the i ntegrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions using polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. To make theformat concrete and appealing, the programmin g environments Matlab and Octave are adopted as faithful companions. The book contains the solutions to several problems posed in exercises and examples, often originating from importantapplications. At the end of each chapter, a specific section is devot ed to subjects which were not addressed in the book and contains bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material. From the review:.... This carefully written textbook, the third English edition, contains substantial new devel opments on the numerical solution of differential equations. It is typeset in a two-color design and is written in a style suited forreaders who have mathematics, natural sciences, computer sciences or economics as a background and who are interested in a well-organized introduction to the subject. Title:Generalized Hyperbolic Secant Distributions [electronic resource] : With Applications to Finance
Author(s): Matthias J Fischer
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Among the symmetrical distributions with an infinite domain, the most popular alternative to the normal variant is the logistic distribution as well as the Laplace or the double exponential distribution, which was firstintroduced in 1774. Occasionall y, the Cauchy distribution is also used. Surprisingly, the hyperbolic secant distribution has led a charmed life, although Manoukian and Nadeau had already stated in 1988 that ... the hyperbolic-secantdistribution ... has not received sufficient attention in the published literature, and may be useful for students and practitioners. During the last few years, however, several generalizations of the hyperbolic secant distributionhave become popular in the context of financial return data because of its exc ellent fit. Nearly all of them are summarized within this SpringerBrief

Title:Basics of Modern Mathematical Statistics [electronic resource] : Exercises and Solutions
Author(s): Wolfgang Karl Hrdle
Vladimir Spokoiny
Vladimir Panov
Weining Wang
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The complexity of todays statistical data calls for modern mathematical tools. Many fields of science make use of mathematical statistics and require continuous updating on statistical technologies. Practice makes perfect, since mastering the tools ma kes them applicable. Our book of exercises and solutions offers a wide range of applications and numerical solutions based on R. In modern mathematical statistics, the purpose is to provide statisticsstudents with a number of basic exercises and also an u nderstanding of how the theory can be applied to real-world problems. The application aspect is also quite important, as most previous exercise books are mostly on theoreticalderivations. Also we add some problems from topics often encountered in recent r esearch papers. The book was written for statistics students with one or two years of coursework in mathematical statistics and probability, professors whohold courses in mathematical statistics, and researchers in other fields who would like to do some e xercises on math statistics

Title:Stochastic Differential Equations, Backward SDEs, Partial Differential Equations [electronic resource]
Author(s): Etienne Pardoux
Aurel Rcanu
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This research monograph presents results to researchers in stochastic calculus, forward and backward stochastic differential equations, connections between diffusion processes and second order partial differential equations(PDEs), and financial mathe matics. It pays special attention to the relations between SDEs/BSDEs and second order PDEs under minimal regularity assumptions, and also extends those results to equations with multivalued coefficients. Theauthors present in particular the theory of ref lected SDEs in the above mentioned framework and include exercises at the end of each chapter. Stochastic calculus and stochastic differential equations (SDEs) were first introduced by K.It in the 1940s, in order to construct the path of diffusion process es (which are continuous time Markov processes with continuous trajectories taking their values in a finite dimensional vector space or manifold), which had beenstudied from a more analytic point of view by Kolmogorov in the 1930s. Since then, this topic has become an important subject of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, because of its mathematical richness and its importance forapplications in many areas of Physics, Biology, Economics and Finance, where random processes play an increasingly important role. One important aspect is the connection between diffusion processes and linear partial differentialequations of second order, which is in particular the basis for Monte Carlo numerical methods for linear PDEs. Since the pioneering work of Peng and P ardoux in the early 1990s, a new type of SDEs called backward stochastic differentialequations (BSDEs) has emerged. The two main reasons why this new class of equations is important are the connection between BSDEs and semilinear PDEs, and the fact that B SDEs constitute a natural generalization of the famous Black andScholes model from Mathematical Finance, and thus offer a natural mathematical framework for the formulation of many new models in Finan

Note:This book provides a Management Science approach to quality management in food production. Aspects of food quality, product conformance and reliability/food safety are examined, starting with wheat and ending with its value chaintransformation into b read. Protein qualities that influence glycemic index levels in bread are used to compare the value chains of France and the US. With Kaizen models the book shows how changes in these characteristics are the resultof management decisions made by the wheat growers in response to government policy and industry strategy. Lastly, it provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply kaizen methodology and Deming's work on quality improvement to makethe HACCPs (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) in f ood safety systems more robust

Title:Networks of Networks: The Last Frontier of Complexity [electronic resource]
Author(s): Gregorio D'Agostino
Antonio Scala
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The present work is meant as a reference to provide an organic and comprehensive view of the most relevant results in the exciting new field of Networks of Networks (NetoNets). Seminal papers have recently been published posingthe basis to study what happens when different networks interact, thus providing evidence for the emergence of new, unexpected behaviors and vulnerabilities. From those seminal works, the awareness on the importance understandingNetworks of Networks (NetoNets) has spread to the entire community of Complexity Science. The reader will benefit from the experience of some of the most well-recognized leaders in this field. The contents have been aggregated underfour headings General Theory, Phenomenology, Applications and Risk Asses sment. The reader will be impressed by the different applications of the general paradigm that span from physiology, to financial risk, to transports. We arecurrently making the first steps to reduce the distance between the language and the way of thinki ng of the two communities of experts in real infrastructures and the complexity scientists. Although this path may prove to be long, itis extremely promising, both in extending our understanding of complex systems and in finding concrete applications that can enhance the life quality of millions of people
