Title:Computational Experiment Approach to Advanced Secondary Mathematics Curriculum [electronic resource]
Author(s): Sergei Abramovich
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book promotes the experimental mathematics approach in the context of secondary mathematics curriculum by exploring mathematical models depending on parameters that were typically considered advanced in the pre-digitaleducation era. This approac h, by drawing on the power of computers to perform numerical computations and graphical constructions, stimulates formal learning of mathematics through making sense of a computational experiment. It allowsone (in the spirit of Freudenthal) to bridge seri ous mathematical content and contemporary teaching practice. In other words, the notion of teaching experiment can be extended to include a true mathematical experiment. When usedappropriately, the approach creates conditions for collateral learning (in t he spirit of Dewey) to occur including the development of skills important for engineering applications of mathematics. In the context of a mathematics teachereducation program, this book addresses a call for the preparation of teachers capable of utilizi ng modern technology tools for the modeling-based teaching of mathematics with a focus on methods conducive to the improvement of the wholeSTEM education at the secondary level. By the same token, using the books pedagogy and its mathematical content in a pre-college classroom can assist teachers in introducing students to the ideas that develop the foundation ofengineering profession

Note:This volume addresses the key issue of the initial education and lifelong professional learning of teachers of mathematics to enable them to realize the affordances of educational technology for mathematics. With invitedcontributions from leading sch olars in the field, this volume contains a blend of research articles and descriptive texts. In the opening chapter John Mason invites the reader to engage in a number of mathematics tasks that highlightimportant features of technology-mediated mathematic al activity. This is followed by three main sections: An overview of current practices in teachers use of digital technologies in the classroom and explorations of thepossibilities for developing more effective practices drawing on a range of research per spectives (including grounded theory, enactivism and Valsiners zone theory). Aset of chapters that share many common constructs (such asinstrumental orchestration, instrumental distance and double instrumental genesis) and research settings that have emer ged from the French research community, but have also been taken up by other colleagues. Meta-level considerationsof research in the domain by contrasting different approaches and proposing connecting or uniting elements

Title:Andr-Louis Cholesky [electronic resource] : Mathematician, Topographer and Army Officer
Author(s): Claude Brezinski
Dominique Tourns
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Outside the professional circles of topography and applied mathematics, the life and work of Andr-Louis Cholesky (18751918) are still relatively unknown to the scientific community. This new book appreciably widens theexposure of his remarkable perso nal achievements in topography and mathematics to a much larger international audience. Cholesky is also interesting to historians because he is a perfect representative of the scientistsengineers that, since the early 19th century, had issued from the F rench scientific high schools. Because they had received a high level of mathematical education, they were able to innovate in their practice of engineering. In thecase of Cholesky, this resulted in original contributions in artillery, topography, numeric al analysis and graphical calculation. In addition, the book places his education and works within the history of several European countriesthrough the 17th to 19th centuries. The book begins with Cholesky's biography, followed by his familys history and an introduction to topography. It continues with a historical analysis of an unpublished paper (translated intoEnglish) in which Cholesky explained his method for linear systems. Cholesky's other works are then described, such as his participation in tea ching at a superior school by correspondence founded by Lon Eyrolles. His importantunpublished book in French on graphical calculation, which is reproduced in its entirety, is analyzed in detail and compared to similar contemporary publications. The biogr aphy of Ernest Benoit, who wrote the first paper on Cholesky'smethod, is provided. Various documents, highlighting the life and the personality of Cholesky, round out his story and end the book

Title:Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians 2: Applications and Extensions [electronic resource]
Author(s): Jochen Pade
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The two-volume textbook Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians provides an introduction to the basics of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Originally written as a course for students of science education, the book addresses all thosescience students and others who are looking for a reasonably simple, fresh and modern introduction to the field. The basic principles of quantum mechanics are presented in the first volume. This second volume discusses applications andextensions to more complex problems. In a ddition to topics traditionally dealt with in quantum mechanics texts, such as symmetries or many-body problems, here also issues of current interest such as entanglement, Bell's inequalities, decoherence and various aspects of quantum information are trea ted in detail. Furthermore, questions of the basis of quantum mechanics and epistemological issues are discussed explicitly these are relevant e.g. to the realism debate.A chapter on the interpretations of quantum mechanics completes this volume. The nece ssary mathematical tools are introduced step by step in the appendix, the most relevant mathematics is compiled in compact form. More advanced topicssuch as the Lenz vector, Hardy's experiment and Shor's algorithm are treated in more detail in the appendi x. As an essential aid to learning and teaching, 130 exercises are included, most of them with their solutions

Title:Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam [electronic resource] : Research, Teaching, Life
Author(s): Alexander Pechenkin
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This biography of the famous Soviet physicist Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam (1889-1944), who became a Professor at Moscow State University in 1925, describes his contributions to both physics and technology, as well as discussingthe scientific communi ty which formed around him, usually called the Mandelstam school. Mandelstams life story is thereby placed in its proper cultural context. The following more general issues are taken under consideration: theimpact of German scientific culture on Russian s cience the problems and fates of Russian intellectuals during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary years the formation of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and transformation of thesystem of higher education in the USSR during the 1920's and 1930's.The a uthor shows that Mandelstams fundamental writings and his lectures notes allow to reconstruct his philosophy of science and his approach to the social andethical functions of science and science education. That reconstruction is enhanced through extensive use of hitherto unpublished archival material as well as the transcripts of personal interviews conducted by the author

Title:Alfred Tarski [electronic resource] : Early Work in PolandGeometry and Teaching
Author(s): Andrew McFarland
Joanna McFarland
James T Smith
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Alfred Tarski (19011983) was a renowned Polish/American mathematician, a giant of the twentieth century, who helped establish the foundations of geometry, set theory, model theory, algebraic logic, and universal algebra.Throughout his career, he taug ht mathematics and logic at universities and sometimes in secondary schools. Many of his writings before 1939 were in Polish and remained inaccessible to most mathematicians and historians until now. Thisself-contained book focuses on Tarskis early contri butions to geometry and mathematics education, including the famous BanachTarski paradoxical decomposition of a sphere as well as high-school mathematical topics and pedagogy. These themes are significant since Tarskis later research on geometry and its fo undations stemmed in part from his early employment as a high-school mathematics teacher and teacher-trainer. The book contains careful translations andmuch newly uncovered social background of these works written during Tarskis years in Poland. Alfred Ta rski: Early Work in PolandGeometry and Teaching serves the mathematical, educational, philosophical, and historicalcommunities by publishing Tarskis early writings in a broadly accessible form, providing background from archival work in Poland, and updati ng Tarskis bibliography

Title:Test Equating, Scaling, and Linking [electronic resource] : Methods and Practices
Author(s): Michael J Kolen
Robert L Brennan
Date:2014
Edition:3rd ed. 2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book provides an introduction to test equating, scaling, and linking, including those concepts and practical issues that are critical for developers and all other testing professionals. In addition to statisticalprocedures, successful equating, scaling, and linking involves many aspects of testing, including procedures to develop tests, to administer and score tests, and to interpret scores earned on tests. Test equating methods are used withmany standardized tests in education and psychology to ensure that scores from multiple test forms can be used interchangeably. Test scaling is the process of developing score scales that are used when scores on standardized testsare reported. In test linking, scores from two or more tests are related to one another. Linking has received much recent attention, due largely to investigations of linking similarly named tests from different test publishers or testsconstructed for different purposes. In recent years, researchers from the education, psychology, an d statistics communities have contributed to the rapidly growing statistical and psychometric methodologies used in test equating, scaling, and linking. In addition to the literature covered in previous editions, this new edition presents coverage of signi ficant recent research. In order to assist researchers, advanced graduate students and testing professionals, examples are used frequently, and conceptual issues are stressed. New material includes model determination in log-linear smoothing, in-depth pres entation of chained linear and equipercentile equating, equating criteria, test scoring, and a new section on scores for mixed-format tests. In the third edition, each chapter contains a reference list, rather than having a single reference list at the end of the volume The themes of the third edition include: * thepurposes of equating, scaling and linking and their practical context * data collection designs * statistical methodology * designing r

Title:Small Satellites and Their Regulation [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ram S Jakhu
Joseph N Pelton
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Since the launch of UoSat-1 of the University of Surrey (United Kingdom) in 1981, small satellites proved regularly to be useful, beneficial, and cost-effective tools. Typical tasks cover education and workforce development, technology demonstration, verification and validation, scientific and engineering research as well as commercial applications. Today the launch masses range over almost three orders of magnitude starting at less than a kilogram up to afew hundred kilograms, with budgets of less th an US$ 100.00 and up to millions within very short timeframes of sometimes less than two years. Therefore each category of small satellites provides specific challenges in design, development and operations. Small satellites offer great potentials to gain responsive, low-cost access to space within a short timeframe for institutions, companies, regions and countries beyond the traditional big players in thespace arena. For these reasons (particularly the low cost of construction, launch and operation), sma ll (micro, cube or nano) satellites are being preferred by students and educational institutions, amateur radio operators, small anddeveloping countries, international aid agencies and most recently by defense agencies and satellite operators who are exam ining deployment of constellation clusters instead of conventional application satellites. In some cases thesenew capabilities are being deployed as hosted payloads on larger satellites. The advent of hosted payloads as a significant part of the satellite industry represents a key new topic that this book will address. The number of smallsatellitesof various types--is increasing fast as their benefits are being realized. This short and unique interdisciplinary book, covering both technical and regulatory aspects, examines all the different types of applications andreasons for small as well as exploring technical and operational innovations that are being introduced. Italso examinesthe new technic

Title:Handbook on the History of Mathematics Education [electronic resource]
Author(s): Alexander Karp
Gert Schubring
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This is the first comprehensive International Handbook on the History of Mathematics Education, covering a wide spectrum of epochs and civilizations, countries and cultures. Until now, much of the research into the rich and variedhistory of mathemati cs education has remained inaccessible to the vast majority of scholars, not least because it has been written in the language, and for readers, of an individual country. And yet a historical overview, howeverbrief, has become an indispensable element of nearly every dissertation and scholarly article. This handbook provides, for the first time, a comprehensive and systematic aid for researchers around the world in finding the informationthey need about historical developments in mathematics education, no t only in their own countries, but globally as well. Although written primarily for mathematics educators, this handbook will also be of interest to researchers of thehistory of education in general, as well as specialists in cultural and even social hist ory
