It uses the framework of developed deterministic mathematical models to investigate the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation in a wide rangeof doses and dose ra tes on vital body systems including hematopoiesis, small intestine and humoral immunity, as well as on the development of autoimmune diseases. Thus, these models can contribute to the development of the system andquantitative approaches in radiation biolo gy and ecology. This text is also of practical use. Its modeling studies of the dynamics of granulocytopoiesis and thrombocytopoiesis in humans testify to the efficiency of employment of thedeveloped models in the investigation and prediction of radiation effects on these hematopoietic lines. These models, as well as the properly identified models of other vital body systems, could provide a better understanding of theradiation risks to health. The modeling predictions will enable the implementation of mo re effective preventive and protective measures for people residing in areas with elevated radiation background and astronauts on long-term spacemissions. Lastly, the models of the radiation-induced mortality established the theoretical foundations of a n ew individual-based approach to radiation risk assessment. These models thus enable one to predict the mortality dynamics andaverage life-span shortening for individuals and populations exposed to acute and low-level chronic radiation. Because of its theo retical and practical benefits, this book is as useful for academics, scientists and researchers workingin the field of mathematical modeling of biological systems as it is for those working in the fields of radiation biology, ecology and medicine. It is equally useful for Aerospace companies and various corporations that contend withthe problems of environmental protection and radiation safety

Note:UV radiation is an important part in the electromagnetic spectrum since the energy of the photons is great enough to produce important chemical reactions in the atmospheres of planets and satellites of our Solar System, therebyaffecting the transmiss ion of this radiation to the ground and its physical properties. Scientists have used different techniques (balloons and rockets) to access to the information contained in this radiation, but the pioneering ofthis new frontier has not been free of dangers . The Sun is our main source of UV radiation and its description occupies the first two chapters of the book. The Earth is the only known location where life exists in a planetary systemand therefore where the interaction of living organism with UV radiat ion can be tested through different epochs and on distinct species. The development of the human technology has affected the natural shield of ozone that protectscomplex lifeforms against damaging UV irradiation. The formation of the ozone hole and its co nsequences are described, together with the possible contribution of UV radiation to recent climate changes. Finally, we will discuss thepotential role of ultraviolet light in the development of life on bodies such as Mars, Europa and Titan. The Solar Sys tem is not isolated other external sources can contribute to the enhancement of the UV radiation in our environment.The influence of such events as nearby supernovae and gamma-ray bursts are described, together with the consequences to terrestrial life fr om such events
