Title: | Relativity and Gravitation [electronic resource] : 100 Years after Einstein in Prague |
Author(s): |
Ji Bik Tom Ledvinka |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | In early April 1911 Albert Einstein arrived in Prague to become full professor of theoretical physics at the German part of Charles University. It was there, for the first time, that he concentrated primarily on the problem ofgravitation. Before he l eft Prague in July 1912 he had submitted the paper Relativitt und Gravitation: Erwiderung auf eine Bemerkung von M. Abraham in which he remarkably anticipated what a future theory of gravity should looklike. At the occasion of the Einstein-in-Prague cente nary an international meeting was organized under a title inspired by Einstein's last paper from the Prague period: Relativity and Gravitation, 100 Years after Einstein inPrague. The main topics of the conference included: classical relativity, numerical relativity, relativistic astrophysics and cosmology, quantum gravity, experimental aspects of gravitation, and conceptual and historical issues. Theconference attracted over 200 scientists from 31 countries, among them a number of leading experts in the f ield of general relativity and its applications. This volume includes abstracts of the plenary talks and full texts ofcontributed talks and articles based on the posters presented at the conference. These describe primarily original results of the authors . Full texts of the plenary talks are included in the volume General Relativity, Cosmology andAstrophysics--Perspectives 100 Years after Einstein in Prague, eds. J. Bik and T. Ledvinka, published also by Springer Verlag |

Note: | Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951) belongs with Max Planck (1858-1947), Albert Einstein (1879-1955) and Niels Bohr (1885-1962) among the founders of modern theoretical physics, a science that developed into a budding discipline duringhis lifetime. Sommerf eld witnessed many of the most dramatic scientific, cultural and political events of this era. His correspondence with his family offers a vivid testament to the challenges and joys of a life in science. Thisbiography attempts to reconstruct Sommerfelds l ife and work not only from the perspective of his achievements in theoretical physics but also with the goal of portraying the career of a scientist within the social and politicalenvironment in which it evolved. It is based to a large extent on Sommerfel ds voluminous correspondence, which sheds light both on his private and scientific life. Furthermore, it provides an authentic view on the circumstances thatshaped Sommerfelds career in different places Knigsberg, Gttingen, Clausthal, Aachen, Munich and in different institutional and disciplinary settings mineralogy, mathematics, engineering, physics. Although thisbiography is not a study of Sommerfelds school, it also renders transparent what made this group of physicists so unique and gave its founde r the aura of a charismatic teacher. This becomes particularly evident in the reverence withwhich he was received by his hosts during his travels all over the world travels that Sommerfeld perceived as cultural missions. International politics, personal zeal and scientific interests became closely entangled at suchoccasions. Such an entanglement is by no means uncommon in the history of science but it is rarely observed so persistently as in Sommerfelds case |

Note: | Gsta Mittag-Leffler (18461927) played a significant role on the world stage as both a scientist and entrepreneur. Regarded as the father of Swedish mathematics, his influence extended far beyond his chosen field because ofhis extensive network of int ernational contacts in science, business, and the arts. His social and professional circles included such luminaries as Selma Lagerlf, Albert Einstein, Sonya Kovalevsky, Alfred Nobel, Karl Weierstrass,Henri Poincar, and Marie Curie. (He was instrumental i n seeing to it that the latter was awarded the Nobel Prize, not once but twice.) One of Mittag-Lefflers major accomplishments was the founding of the journal Acta Mathematicain 1882. Today the journal is still published by Institut Mittag-Leffler and Swed ens Royal Academy of Sciences, and it continues to be one of the most prestigious journals in mathematics. Arild Stubhaugs research for thismonumental biography of the Swedish mathematician relied on a wealth of primary and secondary resources, including more than 30000 letters that are part of the Mittag-Leffler archives. Written in a lucid and compelling manner, thebiography contains many hitherto unknown facts about Mittag-Lefflers personal life and professional endeavors. It will be of great interest to both mathematicians and general readers interested in science and culture |

Title: | Epistemology and Probability [electronic resource] : Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrdinger, and the Nature of Quantum-Theoretical Thinking |

Note: | Quantum mechanics, discovered by Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrdinger in 1925-1926, is famous for its radical implications for our conception of physics and for our view of human knowledge in general. While these implicationshave been seen as scien tifically productive and intellectually liberating to some, Niels Bohr and Heisenberg, among them, they have been troublesome to many others, including Schrdinger and, most famously, Albert Einstein. Thesituation led to the intense debate that started in the wake of its discovery and has continued into our own time, with no end appearing to be in sight. Epistemology and Probability aims to contribute to our understanding of quantummechanics and of the reasons for its extraordinary impact by reconsidering, under the rubric of nonclassical epistemology, the nature of epistemology and probability, and their relationships in quantum theory. The book bringstogether the thought of the three figures most responsible for the rise of quantum mechanicsHeisenberg an d Schrdinger, on the physical side, and Bohr, on the philosophical sidein order to develop a deeper sense of the physical, mathematical, and philosophical workings of quantum-theoretical thinking. Reciprocally, giving a special emphasis on probability and specifically to the Bayesian concept of probability allows the book to gain new insights into thethought of these figures. The book reconsiders, from this perspective, the Bohr-Einstein debate on the epistemology of quantum physics and, in particular, off ers a new treatment of the famous experiment of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen(EPR), and of the Bohr-Einstein exchange concerning the subject. It also addresses the relevant aspects of quantum information theory and considers the implications of its episte mological argument for higher-level quantum theories, such as quantum field theory and string and brane theories. One of the main contributions of the book is its analysis of the role of ma |

Note: | This book presents a selection of 434 carefully annotated letters from and to the Dutch physicist and Nobel Prize winner Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928), covering the period from 1883 until a few months before his death inFebruary 1928. Most of th ese letters are of a scientific nature, with the exception of letters between Lorentz and Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Woldemar Voigt, and Wilhelm Wien during World War I, since these letters shed importantlight on the disruption of scientific relations d uring the war and on the political views of these correspondents as well as of Lorentz. The letters are being reproduced in their original language (German, French and English), and afew Dutch drafts are accompanied by English translations. A concise biog raphy of Lorentz is also included, as well as a full bibliography of his writings |

Title: | Gravity, Black Holes, and the Very Early Universe [electronic resource] : An Introduction to General Relativity and Cosmology |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | In the early 1900s, Albert Einstein formulated two theories that would forever change the landscape of physics: the Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity. By 1925, quantum mechanics had been born outof the dissection of th ese two theories, and shortly after that, relativistic quantum field theory. We now had in place some important ties between the laws of physics and the types of particle interactions the new physics wasuncovering. Gravity is one of the four types of forc es that are found throughout the universe. In fact, although it is a relatively weak force, it operates at huge distances, and so must be accounted for in any cosmological system.Unfortunately, gravity continues to defy our neat categorization of how all the forces in nature work together. Professor Tai Chow, from the California State University at Stanislaus in Turlock, lays out for us the basic ideas ofEinstein, including his law of gravitation, explains the physics behind black holes, and weaves into t his an absorbing account an explanation of the structure of the universe and the science of cosmology, including presenting thevarious models of the Big Bang, the Inflationary Universe, and the Unification of Forces. Travel with him down this engaging pat h to reach some fascinating conclusions, which raise even more interesting questions for the future ofastronomy and physics. Says Dr. Mark Silverman of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut: The author introduces the mathematical methods essential to understanding and applying general relativitybut leaves to more advancedreferences derivations that a beginning student would likely find overly long and tedious. In this way the student can concentrate on learning physics .A strong point [is] the compreh ensive discussion of the physics of blackholes. Here again the author has hit just the right level of presentation: sufficient mathematical detail to demonstrate the physical attributes |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Einsteins Struggles with Quantum Theory: A Reappraisal by Dipankar Home and Andrew Whitaker provides a detailed account of Albert Einsteins thinking in regard to quantum physics. Until recently, most of Einsteins viewson quantum physics were dismisse d and even ridiculed some critics even suggested that Einstein was not able to grasp the complexities of the formalism of quantum theory and subtleties of the standard interpretation of this theoryknown as the Copenhagen interpretation put forward by Niel s Bohr and his colleagues. But was that true? Modern scholarship argues otherwise, insist Drs. Home and Whitaker, who painstakingly explain the questions Einstein raised as wellas offer a detailed discussion of Einsteins position and major contributions t o quantum theory, connecting them with contemporary studies on fundamental aspects of this theory. This unique book presents a mathematical as well as anon-mathematical route through the theories, controversies, and investigations, making the discourse bo th readable and understandable to anyone interested in Einstein and quantum theory. The authors also examine recent developments inquantum theory and reveal the influence Einstein has had, and will continue to have, in this important field. Sir Roger Penr ose writes in his Forward: It is immensely refreshing...to find a book which at last pays due respect to thelater views of Einstein...Dipankar Home and Andrew Whitaker have provided us with masterly expositions on the issues....This book is likely to reta in a very significant role for such developments [in quantum theory] for many decades tocome. |

Note: | Many of us have experienced the same fallen and broken something. Yet supposedly, gravity is the weakest of the fundamental forces it is claimed to be 10-15 times weaker than electromagnetism. Still, every one of us has more orless had a personal rel ationship with gravity. Einsteins General Theory of Relativity: With Modern Applications in Cosmology by Oyvind Gron and Sigbjorn Hervik is about gravity and the concept of gravity as Albert Einstein saw it-curved spaces, four-dimensional manifolds and ge odesics. The book starts with the 1st principals of relativity and an introduction to Einsteins field equations. Next up are the three classical tests of the relativity theory and anintroduction to black holes. The book contains several topics not found i n other textbooks, such as Kaluza-Klein theory, anisotropic models of the universe, and new developments involving brane cosmology. Gron and Hervik have includeda part in the book called Advanced Topics. These topics range from the very edge of research t o older, accepted ideas. In particular, the last two chapters deal with Einstein gravity in five dimensions, which has been a hot topicof research in recent years. On one final note, cosmology has also proven to be a very important testing arena for the g eneral theory of relativity and a large part of the book is therefore devoted to this subject |

Note: | The Poincar Seminar is held twice a year at the Institute Henri Poincar in Paris. The goal of this seminar is to provide up-to-date information about general topics of great interest in physics. Both the theoretical andexperimental results are covere d, with some historical background. Particular care is devoted to the pedagogical nature of the presentation. This volume is devoted to Einstein's 1905 papers and their legacy. After a presentation ofEinstein's epistemological approach to physics, and the genesis of special relativity, a centenary perspective is offered. The geometry of relativistic spacetime is explained in detail. Single photon experiments are presented, as aspectacular realization of Einstein's light quanta hypothesis. A previously unp ublished lecture by Einstein, which presents an illuminating point of view on statistical physics in 1910, at the dawn of quantum mechanics, is reproduced. The volume ends with an essay on the historical, physical and mathematical aspects of Brownian motio n. Note: | In March 1905, at approximately eight week intervals, the Editor of the noted German physics journal, Annalen der Physik, received three hand-written manuscripts from a relatively unknown patent examiner in Bern, Switzerland. Thispatent examiner was the twenty-six year old Albert Einstein and the three papers would set the agenda for twentieth century physics. A fourth short paper was received in September 1905 and contained Einstein's derivation of the formulaE=mc^2. These papers changed our lives i n the twentieth century and beyond. While to a professional physicist the mathematics in these papers are quite straight forward, the ideas behind them are not. In fact, none of Einstein'scontemporaries fully understood what he had done. In SECRETS OF THE OLD ONE: Einstein, 1905, renowned science writer Jeremy Bernstein makes these ideas accessible to a general reader with a limited background in mathematics. Afterreading this book, you will understand why 1905 is often designated as Einstein's miracle ye ar |
