Note:The book contains description of a real life application of modern mathematical optimization tools in an important problem solution for power networks. The objective is the modelling and calculation of optimal daily scheduling ofpower generation, by thermal power plants, to satisfy all demands at minimum cost, in such a way that the generation and transmission capacities as well as the demands at the nodes of the system appear in an integrated form. Thephysical parameters of the network are also take n into account. The obtained large-scale mixed variable problem is relaxed in a smart, practical way, to allow for fast numerical solution of the problem

Note:Hydroelectric power stations are a major source of electricity around the world understanding their dynamics is crucial to achieving good performance. Modelling and Controlling Hydropower Plants discusses practical andwell-documented cases of modelli ng and controlling hydropower station modelling and control, focussing on a pumped storage scheme based in Dinorwig, North Wales. Single-input-single-output and multiple-input-multiple-output models,which cover the linear and nonlinear characteristics of pump-storage hydroelectric power stations, are reviewed. The most important dynamic features are discussed, and the verification of these models by hardware in the loop simulationis described. To show how the performance of a pump-storage hydroelectric po wer station can be improved, classical and modern controllers are applied to simulated models of the Dinorwig power plant. These include PID, fuzzyapproximation, feed-forward and model-based predictive control with linear and hybrid prediction models. Mod elling and Controlling Hydropower Plants will be of value to control engineers working in industry. In addition, thetheoretical treatment of modern and classic controllers will be useful for academic researchers and graduate students in control and power engineering. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer oftechnology in control engineering.
