Title:Channeling and Radiation in Periodically Bent Crystals [electronic resource]
Author(s): Andrey V Korol
Andrey V Solov'yov
Walter Greiner
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications inbasic science, technolog y and medicine, and, in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emittingelectromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ult raviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible withoutnew approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one s uch novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator -whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativisticparticles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a de vice can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers willbe presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological adv ances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations intocrystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiat ion, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much carehas been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad re adership of researchers and scientist with variousbackgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account.

Title:Quantum Physics of Light and Matter [electronic resource] : A Modern Introduction to Photons, Atoms and Many-Body Systems
Author(s): Luca Salasnich
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The book gives an introduction to the field quantization (second quantization) of light and matter with applications to atomic physics. The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics andthe basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light fieldquantization in the description of electr omagnetic transitions. In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects ofexternal electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra ( Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variationalmethod, the density functional theory, and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Fin ally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrdinger field, which gives apowerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned

Title:Numerical Methods for Metamaterial Design [electronic resource]
Author(s): Kenneth Diest
Date:2013
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book describes a relatively new approach for the design of electromagnetic metamaterials. Numerical optimization routines are combined with electromagnetic simulations to tailor the broadband optical properties of ametamaterial to have predeterm ined responses at predetermined wavelengths. After a review of both the major efforts within the field of metamaterials and the field of mathematical optimization, chapters covering both gradient-based andderivative-free design methods are considered. Sel ected topics including surrogate-base optimization, adaptive mesh search, and genetic algorithms are shown to be effective, gradient-free optimization strategies. Additionally, newtechniques for representing dielectric distributions in two dimensions, inc luding level sets, are demonstrated as effective methods for gradient-based optimization. Each chapter begins with a rigorous review of the optimizationstrategy used, and is followed by numerous examples that combine the strategy with either electromagnet ic simulations or analytical solutions of the scattering problem. Throughout the text, we address the strengths and limitations ofeach method, as well as which numerical methods are best suited for different types of metamaterial designs. This book is int ended to provide a detailed enough treatment of the mathematical methods used, along with sufficientexamples and additional references, that senior level undergraduates or graduate students who are new to the fields of plasmonics, metamaterials, or optimi zation methods have an understanding of which approaches are best-suited fortheir work and how to implement the methods themselves

Title:Special Relativity in General Frames [electronic resource] : From Particles to Astrophysics
Author(s): ric Gourgoulhon
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Special relativity is the basis of many fields in modern physics: particle physics, quantum field theory, high-energy astrophysics, etc. This theory is presented here by adopting a four-dimensional point of view from the start. An outstanding feature of the book is that it doesnt restrict itself to inertial frames but considers accelerated and rotating observers. It is thus possible to treat physical effects such as the Thomas precession or the Sagnaceffect in a simple yet precise manner. In the final chapters, more advanced topics like tensorial fields in spacetime, exterior calculus and relativistic hydrodynamics are addressed. In the last, brief chapter the author gives apreview of gravity and shows where it becomes incompatible with Minkowsky spac etime. Well illustrated and enriched by many historical notes, this book also presents many applications of special relativity, ranging from particle physics(accelerators, particle collisions, quark-gluon plasma) to astrophysics (relativistic jets, active galactic nuclei), and including practical applications (Sagnac gyrometers, synchrotron radiation, GPS). In addition, the book providessome mathematical developments, such as the detailed analysis of the Lorentz group and its Lie algebra. The book is suit able for students in the third year of a physics degree or on a masters course, as well as researchers and anyreader interested in relativity. Thanks to the geometric approach adopted, this book should also be beneficial for the study of general relativit y. A modern presentation of special relativity must put forward its essentialstructures, before illustrating them using concrete applications to specific dynamical problems. Such is the challenge (so successfully met!) of the beautiful book by ric Gourgou lhon. (excerpt from the Foreword by ThibaultDamour)

Nickolay Mikheev
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Expanding on the concept of the authors previous book ElectroweakProcesses in External Electromagnetic Fields, this new book systematically describes the investigation methods for the effects of external active media, both strong electromagnetic field s and hot dense plasma, in quantum processes. Solving the solar neutrino puzzle in a unique experiment conducted with the help of the heavy-waterdetector at the Sudbery Neutrino Observatory, alongwith another neutrino experiments, brings to the fore elect roweak physics in anactive external medium. It is effectively demonstrated that processes of neutrino interactions with active media of astrophysical objects may lead, undersome physical conditions, to such interesting effects as neutrino-driven shockwave revival in a supernova explosion, acherry stone shooting mechanism for pulsar natal kick, and aneutrino pulsar. It is also shown how poorestimates of particledispersion in external active media sometimes lead to confusion. Thebook will appeal to graduate and post-graduate students of theoreticalphysics with a prior understanding of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) andthe Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions, as well asto specialists in QFT who want to know more about the problems ofquantum phenomena in h ot dense plasma and external electromagnetic fields

This limit could be overcome using the noveltechnology of nano-optics or nanophotonics in which the size of the electromagnetic field is decreased down to the nanoscale and is used as a carrier for signal transmission, processing, and fabrication. Such a decrease beyond thediffraction limit is possible by using optical near-f ields. The true nature of nano-optics and nanophotonics involves not only their abilities to meet the above requirements but also their abilities to realize qualitative innovationsin photonic devices, fabrication techniques, energy conversion and informat ion processing systems. The objective of this work is to review the innovations of optical science and technology by nano-optics and nanophotonics. While inconventional optical science and technology, light and matter are discussed separately, in nano-opt ics and nanophotonics, light and matter have to be regarded as being coupled to each other, and the energy flow between nanoparticles isbidirectional. This means that nano-optics and nanophotonics have to be regarded as a technology fusing optical fields and matter. This unique work reviews and covers the most recent topics of nano-optics, applications to deviceoperations, fabrication techniques, energy conversion, information processing, architectures and algorithms. Each chapter is written by the leadin g scientists in the relevant field. Thus, this work will provide high-quality scientificand technical information to scientists, engineers, and graduate students who are and will be engaged in R&D of nano-optics and nanophotonics. Especially, the topics t o be covered by this work will be popularly used by the engineers inthe rapidly growing market of the optical energy conversion

Note:The present book provides a contemporary systematic treatment of shock waves in high-temperature collisionless plasmas as are encountered in near Earth space and in Astrophysics. It consists of two parts. Part I develops thecomplete theory of shocks in dilute hot plasmas under the assumption of absence of collisions among the charged particles when the interaction is mediated solely by the self-consistent electromagnetic fields. Such shocks are naturallymagnetised implying that the magnetic field pla ys an important role in their evolution and dynamics. This part treats both subcritical shocks, which dissipate flow energy by generating anomalous resistance or viscosity, andsupercritical shocks. The main emphasis is, however, on super-critical shocks wh ere the anomalous dissipation is insufficient to retard the upstream flow. These shocks, depending on the direction of the upstream magnetic field, aredistinguished as quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel shocks which exhibit different behaviours, refle cting particles back upstream and generating high electromagnetic wave intensities. Particle acceleration and turbulence at suchshocks become possible and important. Part II treats planetary bow shocks and the famous Heliospheric Termination shock as exam ples of two applications of the theory developed in Part I

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Computational Electromagnetics is a young and growing discipline, expanding as a result of the steadily increasing demand for software for the design and analysis of electrical devices. This book introduces three of the mostpopular numerical methods for simulating electromagnetic fields: the finite difference method, the finite element method and the method of moments. In particular it focuses on how these methods are used to obtain valid approximationsto the solutions of Maxwell's equations, using, for example, staggered grids and edge elements. The main goal of the book is to make the reader aware of different sources of errors in numerical computations, and also to providethe tools for assessing the accuracy of numerical methods and their solution s. To reach this goal, convergence analysis, extrapolation, von Neumann stability analysis, and dispersion analysis are introduced and used frequentlythroughout the book. Another major goal of the book is to provide students with enough practical understa nding of the methods so they are able to write simple programs on their own. To achieve this, the book contains several MATLABprograms and detailed description of practical issues such as assembly of finite element matrices and handling of unstructured me shes. Finally, the book summarizes the strengths and weaknessesof the different methods to help thestudent decide which method may be best for each problem. In this second edition the book was updated throughout and extensive computer projects are include d. Reviews of previous edition: This well-written monograph is devoted tostudents at the undergraduate level, but is also useful for practising engineers. (Zentralblatt MATH, 2007)

Title:Nonlinear Optics and Laser Emission through Random Media [electronic resource]

Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Disorder is everywhere, inherently present in nature, and is commonly believed to be a synonymous with disturbance. As a consequence, the methodical and customary study of the dynamics of the electromagnetic field, both in thelinear and nonlinear opt ical regimes, leans to rule out it from the treatment. On the other hand, nonlinearity enriches the physical disciplines and brings them closer to reality with respect to the linear approximation. Nonlinearityallows to stimulate a wide and rich ensemble o f optical responses that beautifies the role of matter in the active processes with electromagnetic fields. Independently of each other, both of these mechanisms foster localization oflight. What happens when light enlightens their synergistic interaction ? When pushed together, light, disorder and nonlinearity make new and intriguing phenomena emerge. This text provides a comprehensive investigation of the role ofdisorder in the nonlinear optical propagation both in transparent media and lasers. Eventuall y, disorder promotes and enhances complex nonlinear dynamics opening new perspectives in applied research driven by the processes oflocalization of the electromagnetic field. The first experimental study of laser emission in granular media unveils how ran domness magnifies and largely affect laser-matter interactions. Viola Folli in her research work touches anddeepens the leading milestones of the new science named Complex Photonics

Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This second edition is an extended version of the first edition of Geometrical Charged-Particle Optics. The updated reference monograph is intended as a guide for researchers and graduate students who are seeking a comprehensivetreatment of the desig n of instruments and beam-guiding systems of charged particles and their propagation in electromagnetic fields. Wave aspects are included in this edition for explaining electron holography, the Aharanov-Bohmeffect and the resolution of electron microscope s limited by diffraction. Several methods for calculating the electromagnetic field are presented and procedures are outlined for calculating the properties of systems with arbitrarilycurved axis. Detailed methods are presented for designing and optimizin g special components such as aberration correctors, spectrometers, energy filters monochromators, ion traps, electron mirrors and cathode lenses. In particular, theoptics of rotationally symmetric lenses, quadrupoles, and systems composed of these element s are discussed extensively. Beam properties such as emittance, brightness, transmissivity and the formation of caustics are outlined.Relativistic motion and spin precession of the electron are treated in a covariant way by introducing the Lorentz-invaria nt universal time and by extending Hamiltons principle from three to four spatial dimensions where thelaboratory time is considered as the fourth pseudo-spatial coordinate. Using this procedure and introducing the self action of the electron, its accompan ying electromagnetic field and its radiation field are calculated for arbitrarymotion. In addition, the Stern-Gerlach effect is revisited for atomic and free electrons

Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Central to this thesis is the characterisation and exploitation of electromagnetic properties of light in imaging and measurement systems. To this end an information theoretic approach is used to formulate a hitherto lacking, quantitative definition o f polarisation resolution, and to establish fundamental precision limits in electromagnetic systems. Furthermore rigorous modelling tools are developed for propagation of arbitrary electromagnetic fields, including for example stochastic fields exhibiting properties such as partial polarisation, through high numerical aperture optics. Finally these ideas are applied to the development, characterisation and optimisation of a number oftopical optical systems: polarisation imaging multiplexed optical data sto rage and single molecule measurements. The work has implications for all optical imaging systems where polarisation of light is of concern

Title:The Classical Theory of Fields [electronic resource] Electromagnetism
Author(s): Carl S Helrich

Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The study of classical electromagnetic fields is an adventure. The theory is complete mathematically and we are able to present it as an example of classical Newtonian experimental and mathematical philosophy. There is a set offoundational experiment s, on which most of the theory is constructed. And then there is the bold theoretical proposal of a field-field interaction from James Clerk Maxwell. This textbook presents the theory of classical fields as amathematical structure based solidly on laborat ory experiments. Here the student is introduced to the beauty of classical field theory as a gem of theoretical physics. To keep the discussion fluid, the history is placed in a beginningchapter and some of the mathematical proofs in the appendices. Chapt ers on Greens Functions and Laplaces Equation and a discussion of Faradays Experiment further deepen the understanding. The chapter on Einsteins relativityis an integral necessity to the text. Finally, chapters on particle motion and waves in a dispersive medium complete the picture. High quality diagrams and detailed end-of-chapter questions enhance the learning experience

Note:This is the updated, widely revised, restructured and expanded third edition of Lna et al.'s successful work Observational Astrophysics. It presents a synthesis on tools and methods of observational astrophysics of the early21st century. Written spec ifically for astrophysicists and graduate students, this textbook focuses on fundamental and sometimes practical limitations on the ultimate performance that an astronomical system may reach, rather thanpresenting particular systems in detail. In little m ore than a decade there has been extraordinary progress in imaging and detection technologies, in the fields of adaptive optics, optical interferometry, in the sub-millimetrewaveband, observation of neutrinos, discovery of exoplanets, to name but a few ex amples. The work deals with ground-based and space-based astronomy and their respective fields. And it also presents the ambitious concepts behind spacemissions aimed for the next decades. Avoiding particulars, it covers the whole of the electromagnetic s pectrum, and provides an introduction to the new forms of astronomy becoming possible with gravitational waves and neutrinos. Italso treats numerical aspects of observational astrophysics: signal processing, astronomical databases and virtual observatorie s

Note:Electroweak and Strong Interaction: Phenomenology, Concepts, Models, begins with relativistic quantum mechanics and some quantum field theory which lay the foundation for the rest of the text. The phenomenology and the physics ofthe fundamental inter actions are emphasized through a detailed discussion of the empirical fundamentals of unified theories of strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. The principles of local gauge theories are described both ina heuristic and a geometric framework. Th e minimal standard model of the fundamental interactions is developed in detail and characteristic applications are worked out. Possible signals of physics beyond that model, notably in thephysics of neutrinos are also discussed. Among the applications sc attering on nucleons and on nuclei provide salient examples. Numerous exercises with solutions make the text suitable for advanced courses or individual study. Title:Advanced Quantum Mechanics [electronic resource] : Materials and Photons
Author(s): Rainer Dick
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Advanced Quantum Mechanics: Materials and Photons is a textbook which emphasizes the importance of advanced quantum mechanics for materials science and all experimental techniques which employ photon absorption, emission, orscattering. Important aspe cts of introductory quantum mechanics are covered in the first seven chapters to make the subject self-contained and accessible for a wide audience. The textbook can therefore be used for advancedundergraduate courses and introductory graduate courses whi ch are targeted towards students with diverse academic backgrounds from the Natural Sciences or Engineering. To enhance this inclusive aspect of making the subject asaccessible as possible, Appendices A and B also provide introductions to Lagrangian mecha nics and the covariant formulation of electrodynamics. Other special features include an introduction to Lagrangian field theory and an integrateddiscussion of transition amplitudes with discrete or continuous initial or final states. Once students have a cquired an understanding of basic quantum mechanics and classical field theory, canonical field quantization is easy.Furthermore, the integrated discussion of transition amplitudes naturally leads to the notions of transition probabilities, decay rates, a bsorption cross sections and scattering cross sections, which are important for all experimentaltechniques that use photon probes. Quantization is first discussed for the Schrdinger field before the relativistic Maxwell, Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields are quantized. Quantized Schrdinger field theory is not only important forcondensed matter physics and materials science, but also provides the easiest avenue to general field quantization and is therefore also useful for students with an interest in nuclear and particle physics. The quantization of theMaxwell field is performed in Coulomb gauge. This is the appropriate and practically most useful quantization procedure in condensed matter physics, chem

Title:The Geometry of Minkowski Spacetime [electronic resource] An Introduction to the Mathematics of the Special Theory of Relativity
Author(s): Gregory L Naber
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book offers a presentation of the special theory of relativity that is mathematically rigorous and yet spells out in considerable detail the physical significance of the mathematics. It treats, in addition to the usualmenu of topics one is accu stomed to finding in introductions to special relativity, a wide variety of results of more contemporary origin. These include Zeemans characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime, the Penrose theorem on the apparent shape of a relat ivistically moving sphere, a detailed introduction to the theory of spinors, a Petrov-type classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form, a topology forMinkowski spacetime whose homeomorphism group is essentially the Lorentz grou p, and a careful discussion of Diracs famous Scissors Problem and its relation to the notion of a two-valued representation of the Lorentz group. Thissecond edition includes a new chapter on the de Sitter universe which is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide a gentle prologue to the steps one must take to move beyond special relativity and adapt to the presenceof gravitational fields that cannot be considered negligible. The second is to understand some of the basic features of a model of the empty universe that differs markedly from Minkowski spacetime, but may be recommended by recentastronomical observations suggesting that the expansion of our own universe is accelerating rather than slowing down. The treatment presumes only a know ledge of linear algebra in the first three chapters, a bit of real analysis in thefourth and, in two appendices, some elementary point-set topology. The first edition of the book received the 1993 CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Title. Reviews of first edition: a valuable contribution to thepedagogical literature which will be enjoyed by all who delight in precise mathematics and physics. (American Mathematic

Title:Electromagnetic Radiation of Electrons in Periodic Structures [electronic resource]
Author(s): Alexander Petrovich Potylitsyn
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Periodic magnetic structures (undulators) are widely used in accelerators to generate monochromatic undulator radiation (UR) in the range from far infrared to the hard X-ray region. Another periodic crystalline structure is usedto produce quasimonoch romatic polarized photon beams via the coherent bremsstrahlung mechanism (CBS). Due to such characteristics as monochromaticity, polarization and adjustability, these types of radiation is of large interest forapplied and basic research of accelerator-emi tted radiation. The book provides a detailed overview of the fundamental principles behind electromagnetic radiation emitted from accelerated charged particles (e.g. UR, CBS, radiation offast electrons in Laser flash fields) as well as a unified descripti on of relatively new radiation mechanisms which attracted great interest in recent years. This are the so-called polarization radiation excited by the Coulomb field ofincident particles in periodic structures, parametric X-rays, resonant transition radiat ion and the Smith-Purcell effect. Characteristics of such radiation sources and perspectives of their usage are discussed. The recent experimentalresults as well as their interpretation are presented

Note:The acquisition and interpretation of images is a central capability in almost all scientific and technological domains. In particular, the acquisition of electromagnetic radiation, in the form of visible light, UV, infrared,X-ray, etc. is of enormou s practical importance. The ultimate sensitivity in electronic imaging is the detection of individual photons. With this book, the first comprehensive review of all aspects of single-photon electronic imaginghas been created. Topics include theoretical ba sics, semiconductor fabrication, single-photon detection principles, imager design and applications of different spectral domains. Today, the solid-state fabrication capabilities forseveral types of image sensors has advanced to a point, where uncoooled s ingle-photon electronic imaging will soon become a consumer product. This book is giving a specialists view from different domains to the forthcomingsingle-photon imaging revolution. The various aspects of single-photon imaging are treated by internationa lly renowned, leading scientists and technologists who have all pioneered their respective fields

Title:Generalized Lorenz-Mie Theories [electronic resource]
Author(s): Grard Gouesbet
Grard Grhan
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The Lorenz-Mie theory, describing the interaction between a homogeneous sphere and an electromagnetic plane wave, is likely to be one of the most famous theories in light scattering. But, with the advent of lasers and theirincreasing development in v arious fields, it has become too old-fashioned to meet most of the modern requisites. The book deals with generalized Lorenz-Mie theories when the illuminating beam is an electromagnetic arbitrary shapedbeam, relying on the method of separation of variabl es. A particular emphasis is stressed on the case of the homogeneous sphere but other regular particles are considered too. An extensive discussion of the methods available to theevaluation of beam shape coefficients describing the illuminating beam is pr ovided, and several methods are discussed. Applications concern many fields such as optical particle sizing and, more generally, optical particlecharacterization, morphology-dependent resonances, or mechanical effects of light for optical trapping, optica l tweezers and optical stretchers. Various computer programs relevant to the contents of the book are furthermore provided
