Note: | The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications inbasic science, technolog y and medicine, and, in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emittingelectromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ult raviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible withoutnew approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one s uch novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator -whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativisticparticles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a de vice can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers willbe presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological adv ances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations intocrystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiat ion, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much carehas been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad re adership of researchers and scientist with variousbackgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account. |

The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics andthe basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light fieldquantization in the description of electr omagnetic transitions.In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects ofexternal electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra ( Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variationalmethod, the density functional theory, and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Fin ally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrdinger field, which gives apowerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned |

Note: | The present book provides a contemporary systematic treatment of shock waves in high-temperature collisionless plasmas as are encountered in near Earth space and in Astrophysics. It consists of two parts. Part I develops thecomplete theory of shocks in dilute hot plasmas under the assumption of absence of collisions among the charged particles when the interaction is mediated solely by the self-consistent electromagnetic fields. Such shocks are naturallymagnetised implying that the magnetic field pla ys an important role in their evolution and dynamics. This part treats both subcritical shocks, which dissipate flow energy by generating anomalous resistance or viscosity,andsupercritical shocks. The main emphasis is, however, on super-critical shocks wh ere the anomalous dissipation is insufficient to retard the upstream flow. These shocks, depending on the direction of the upstream magnetic field, aredistinguished as quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel shocks which exhibit different behaviours, refle cting particles back upstream and generating high electromagnetic wave intensities. Particle acceleration and turbulence at suchshocks become possible and important. Note: | Computational Electromagnetics is a young and growing discipline, expanding as a result of the steadily increasing demand for software for the design and analysis of electrical devices. This book introduces three of the mostpopular numerical methods for simulating electromagnetic fields: the finite difference method, the finite element method and the method of moments. In particular it focuses on how these methods are used to obtain valid approximationsto the solutions of Maxwell's equations, using, for example, staggered grids and edge elements. The main goal of the book is to make the reader aware of different sources of errors in numerical computations, and also to providethe tools for assessing the accuracy of numerical methods and their solution s. To reach this goal, convergence analysis, extrapolation, von Neumann stability analysis, and dispersion analysis are introduced and used frequentlythroughout the book. Another major goal of the book is to provide students with enough practical understa nding of the methods so they are able to write simple programs on their own. To achieve this, the book contains several MATLABprograms and detailed description of practical issues such as assembly of finite element matrices and handling of unstructured me shes. Finally, the book summarizes the strengths and weaknessesof the different methods to help thestudent decide which method may be best for each problem. Wave aspects are included in this edition for explaining electron holography, the Aharanov-Bohmeffect and the resolution of electron microscope s limited by diffraction. Several methods for calculating the electromagnetic field are presented and procedures are outlined for calculating the properties of systems with arbitrarilycurved axis. Detailed methods are presented for designing and optimizin g special components such as aberration correctors, spectrometers, energy filters monochromators, ion traps, electron mirrors and cathode lenses. In particular, theoptics of rotationally symmetric lenses, quadrupoles, and systems composed of these element s are discussed extensively. Beam properties such as emittance, brightness, transmissivity and the formation of caustics are outlined.Relativistic motion and spin precession of the electron are treated in a covariant way by introducing the Lorentz-invaria nt universal time and by extending Hamiltons principle from three to four spatial dimensions where thelaboratory time is considered as the fourth pseudo-spatial coordinate. Using this procedure and introducing the self action of the electron, its accompan ying electromagnetic field and its radiation field are calculated for arbitrarymotion. These include Zeemans characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime,the Penrose theorem on the apparent shape of a relat ivistically moving sphere, a detailed introduction to the theory of spinors, a Petrov-type classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form, a topology forMinkowski spacetime whose homeomorphism group is essentially the Lorentz grou p, and a careful discussion of Diracs famous Scissors Problem and its relation to the notion of a two-valued representation of the Lorentz group. Thissecond edition includes a new chapter on the de Sitter universe which is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide a gentle prologue to the steps one must take to move beyond special relativity and adapt to the presenceof gravitational fields that cannot be considered negligible. The second is to understand some of the basic features of a model of the empty universe that differs markedly from Minkowski spacetime, but may be recommended by recentastronomical observations suggesting that the expansion of our own universe is accelerating rather than slowing down. Note: | Periodic magnetic structures (undulators) are widely used in accelerators to generate monochromatic undulator radiation (UR) in the range from far infrared to the hard X-ray region. Another periodic crystalline structure is usedto produce quasimonoch romatic polarized photon beams via the coherent bremsstrahlung mechanism (CBS). Due to such characteristics as monochromaticity, polarization and adjustability, these types of radiation is of large interest forapplied and basic research of accelerator-emi tted radiation. The book provides a detailed overview of the fundamental principles behind electromagnetic radiation emitted from accelerated charged particles (e.g. UR, CBS, radiation offast electrons in Laser flash fields) as well as a unified descripti on of relatively new radiation mechanisms which attracted great interest in recent years.
