As a basic principle of classification we chose the energetic or intensity level of interaction of laser radiationwith the surfaces. Note: | The present book provides a contemporary systematic treatment of shock waves in high-temperature collisionless plasmas as are encountered in near Earth space and in Astrophysics. It consists of two parts. Part I develops thecomplete theory of shocks in dilute hot plasmas under the assumption of absence of collisions among the charged particles when the interaction is mediated solely by the self-consistent electromagnetic fields. Such shocks are naturallymagnetised implying that the magnetic field pla ys an important role in their evolution and dynamics. This part treats both subcritical shocks, which dissipate flow energy by generating anomalous resistance or viscosity,andsupercritical shocks. The main emphasis is, however, on super-critical shocks wh ere the anomalous dissipation is insufficient to retard the upstream flow. These shocks, depending on the direction of the upstream magnetic field, aredistinguished as quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel shocks which exhibit different behaviours, refle cting particles back upstream and generating high electromagnetic wave intensities. Particle acceleration and turbulence at suchshocks become possible and important. Part II treats planetary bow shocks and the famous Heliospheric Termination shock as exam ples of two applications of the theory developed in Part I |

Note: | Black hole gravitohydromagnetics (GHM) is developed from the rudiments to the frontiers of research in this book. GHM describes plasma interactions that combine the effects of gravity and a strong magnetic field, in the vicinity(ergosphere) of a rapi dly rotating black hole. This topic was created in response to the astrophysical quest to understand the central engines of radio loud extragalactic radio sources. The theory describes a torsional tug of warbetween rotating ergospheric plasma and the dist ant asymptotic plasma that extracts the rotational inertia of the black hole. The recoil from the struggle between electromagnetic and gravitational forces near the event horizon ismanifested as a powerful pair of magnetized particle beams (jets) that are ejected at nearly the speed of light. These bipolar jets feed large-scale magnetized plasmoids on scales as large as millions of light years (the radio lobes ofextragalactic radio sources). This interaction can initiate jets that transport energy fluxes exceeding 1047 ergs/s.
