Note:Quantum information science has found great experimental successby exploitingsingle photons. To date, however, the majority of quantum optical experiments use large-scale (bulk) optical elements bolted down to an opticalbench, an approach that ultima tely limits the complexity and stability of the quantum circuits required for quantum science and technology. The realization of complex optical schemes involving large numbers of elements requires theintroduction of waveguide technology to achieve the de sired scalability, stability and miniaturization of the device. This thesis reports on surprising findings in the field of integrated devices for quantum information. Here thepolarization of the photon is shown to offer a suitable degree of freedom for en coding quantum information in integrated systems. The most important results concern: the quantum interference of polarization entangled photons in anon-chip directional coupler the realization of a Controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate operating with polarization q ubits the realization of a quantum walk of bosons and fermions in an ordered optical lattice and the quantum simulation ofAnderson localization of bosons and fermions simulated by polarization entangled photons in a disordered quantum walk. The findings p resented in this thesis represent an important step towards the integration of a complete quantumphotonic experiment in a chip

Note:Introduction to Thin Film Transistors reviews the operation, application, and technology of the main classes of thin film transistor (TFT) of current interest for large area electronics. The TFT materials covered includehydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), poly-crystalline silicon (poly-Si), transparent amorphous oxide semiconductors (AOS), and organic semiconductors. The large scale manufacturing of a-Si:H TFTs forms the basis of theactivematrix flat panel display industry. Poly-Si TFTs facilita te the integration of electronic circuits into portable active matrix liquid crystal displays, and are increasingly used in active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED)displays for smart phones. The recently developed AOS TFTs are seen as an altern ative option to poly-Si and a-Si:H for AMOLED TV and large AMLCD TV applications, respectively. The organic TFTs are regarded as a cost effective routeinto flexible electronics. As well as treating the highly divergent preparation and properties of these materials, the physics of the devices fabricated from them is also covered, with emphasis on performance features such as carriermobility limitations, leakage currents and instability mechanisms. The thin film transistors implemented with these materials are the conventional, insulated gate field effect transistors, and a further chapter describes a new thinfilm transistor structure: the source gated transistor, SGT. The driving force behind much of the development of TFTs has been their application to AM LCDs, and there is a chapter dealing with the operation of these displays, as well asof AMOLED and electrophoretic displays. A discussion of TFT and pixel layout issues is also included. For students and new-comers to the field, introductory chapters deal with basic semiconductor surface physics, and with classicalMOSFET operation. Note:Autonomous sensors transmit data and power their electronics without using cables. They can be found in e.g. wireless sensor networks (WSNs) or remote acquisition systems. Although primary batteries provide a simple design forpowering autonomous sens ors, they present several limitations such as limited capacity and power density, and difficulty in predicting their condition and state of charge. An alternative is to extract energy from the ambient (energyharvesting). However, the reduced dimensions of most autonomous sensors lead to a low level of available power from the energy transducer. Thus, efficient methods and circuits to manage and gather the energy are a must. An integralapproach for powering autonomous sensors by considering both primary ba tteries and energy harvesters is presented. Two rather different forms of energy harvesting are also dealt with: optical (or solar) and radiofrequency (RF). Opticalenergy provides high energy density, especially outdoors, whereas RF remote powering is pos sibly the most feasible option for autonomous sensors embedded into the soil or within structures. Throughout different chapters, devices suchas primary and secondary batteries, supercapacitors, and energy transducers are extensively reviewed. Then, circu its and methods found in the literature used to efficiently extract and gather the energy are presented. Finally, newproposals based on the authors own research are analyzed and tested. Every chapter is written to be rather independent, with each incorpor ating the relevant literature references. Powering Autonomous Sensors is intended for a wideaudience working on or interested in the powering of autonomous sensors. Researchers and engineers can find a broad introduction to basic topics in this interestin g and emerging area as well as further insights on the topics of solarand RF harvesting and of circuits and methods to maximize the power extracted from energy transducers

Divided into six chapters, the book begins with a presentation of basic concepts ascomplexity, emergence and closure. The second chapter looks to methods and introduces polystochastic models, the wave equation, possibilities and entropy. The third chapter focusing on physical and chemical systems analyzes flow-sheetsynthesis, cyclic operations of separation , drug delivery systems and entropy production. Biomimetic systems represent the main objective of the fourth chapter. Case studies refer to bio-inspired calculation methods, to the role ofartificial genetic codes, neural networks and neural codes for evo lutionary calculus and for evolvable circuits as biomimetic devices. The fifth chapter, taking its inspiration from systems sciences and cognitive sciences looks toengineering design, case base reasoning methods, failure analysis, and multi-agent manufact uring systems.
