Note:The first part of this thesis presents the measurement of the inclusive cross-section for electron production from heavy-flavour decays in the electron transverse momentum range 7 GeV < pT < 26 GeV using 1.3 pb1 of 7 TeVproton-proton collision data c ollected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2010. The measured value of the cross-section within the fiducial range of the analysis is _e^HF = 0.946 0.020(stat.) 0.146(syst.) 0.032(lumi.) b. Theoretical predictions are in good agree ment with the measurement. The second part of this thesis is a search for compressed supersymmetric scenarios in events with missing transverse energy, jets, and oneisolated low-pT lepton in the final state using 4.7 fb-1 of ATLAS data collected at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy in 2011. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits are derivedfor a number of supersymmetric models

The complexity often makes analytic approaches infeasible and natural language approaches inadequate forrelating intricate cause an d effect. However, individual- and agent-based computational approaches hold out the possibility of new and deeper understanding of such systems. Simulating Social Complexity examines all aspects of usingagent- or individual-based simulation. This approac h represents systems as individual elements having each their own set of differing states and internal processes. The interactions between elements in the simulation representinteractions in the target systems. What makes these elements social is that the y are usefully interpretable as interacting elements of an observed society. In this, the focus is on human society, but can be extended to includesocial animals or artificial agents where such work enhances our understanding of human society. The phenome na of interest then result (emerge) from the dynamics of the interaction of social actors in an essential way and are usuallynot easily simplifiable by, for example, considering only representative actors. The introduction of accessible agent-based modell ing allows the representation of social complexity in a more natural and direct manner than previoustechniques. In particular, it is no longer necessary to distort a model with the introduction of overly strong assumptions simply in order to obtain analyt ic tractability. This makes agent-based modelling relatively accessible to arange of scientists. The outcomes of such models can be displayed and animated in ways that also make them more interpretable by experts and stakeholders. The received signal is usually disturbed by thermal, electrical, atmospheric or intentional interferences.
