Note:A Course in Lens Design is an instruction in the design of image-forming optical systems. It teaches how a satisfactory design can be obtained in a straightforward way. Michael Hoskin shows that William Herschel was the first observationalcosmologist and one of the first observers to attack the sidereal universe beyond the solar system: Herschel built instruments far better than any being used at the royal observatory. Aided by his sister Caroline, he commenced a greatsystematic survey that led to his discovery of Uranus in 1781. Unlike observers before him, whose telescopes did not reveal them as astronomical objects, Herschel did not ignore misty patches of light. Hoskins points out Herschelsachievement in surveying, cataloguing, and describing them as nebulae and even coming to the correct conclusion that their structure evolved over time, with Newtons gravity being the agent of change. Note:This book is devoted to the study of the functional architecture of the visual cortex. Its geometrical structure is the differential geometry of the connectivity between neural cells. This connectivity is building and shapingthe hidden brain structur es underlying visual perception. The story of the problem runs over the last 30 years, since the discovery of Hubel and Wiesel of the modular structure of the primary visual cortex, and slowly cams towards atheoretical understanding of the experimental da ta on what we now know as functional architecture of the primary visual cortex. Experimental data comes from several domains: neurophysiology, phenomenology of perception andneurocognitive imaging. Imaging techniques like functional MRI and diffusion tens or MRI allow to deepen the study of cortical structures. This version of Hatfields classic atlas solves the problem of mirror images, making identification ofleft-right reversed imaged lun ar features both quick and easy. SCT and Maksutov telescopes which of course include the best-selling models from Meade and Celestron reverse the visual image left to right. Thus it is extremelydifficult to identify lunar features at the eyepiece of one of the instruments using a conventional Moon atlas, as the human brain does not cope well when trying to compare the real thing with a map that is a mirror image of it. Nowthis issue has at last been solved. In this atlas the Moons surface is shown at v arious sun angles, and inset keys show the effects of optical librations. Smaller non-mirrored reference images are also included to make it simpleto compare the mirrored SCT plates and maps with those that appear in other atlases. This edition still uses the original photographs taken by Commander Henry Hatfield using his 12-inch reflector, but they have been digitallyre-mastered to reveal significantly more lunar surface detail. The key maps, on which lunar features can be readily identified, have been reversed and updated but retain the style and clarity that made the original a standard bearer inthe field. A new chapter on modern lunar observing techniques has been added to show amateur astronomers just how many interesting lunar observing projects t hey can still participate in. Note:This book is the result of a working group sponsored by ISSI in Bern, which was initially created to study possible ways to calibrate a Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument after launch. In most cases, ultraviolet instruments are wellcalibrated on the gr ound, but unfortunately, optics and detectors in the FUV are very sensitive to contaminants and it is very challenging to prevent contamination before and during the test and launch sequences of a space mission.Therefore, ground calibrations need to be co nfirmed after launch and it is necessary to keep track of the temporal evolution of the sensitivity of the instrument during the mission. The studies presented here cover various fields ofFUV spectroscopy with the exclusion of direct solar UV spectroscopy , including a catalog of stellar spectra, data-sets of lunar Irradiance, observations of comets and measurements of the interplanetary background. Detailed modeling ofthe interplanetary background is presented as well. This work also includes comparisons of older data-sets with current ones. This raises the question of the consistency of the existing data-sets. Previous experiments have beencalibrated independently and comparison of the data-sets may lead to inconsistencies. The authors have tried to chec k that possibility in the data-sets and when relevant, suggest a correction factor for the corresponding data

Wave aspects are included in this edition for explaining electron holography, the Aharanov-Bohmeffect and the resolution of electron microscope s limited by diffraction. Several methods for calculating the electromagnetic field are presented and procedures are outlined for calculating the properties of systems with arbitrarilycurved axis. Detailed methods are presented for designing and optimizin g special components such as aberration correctors, spectrometers, energy filters monochromators, ion traps, electron mirrors and cathode lenses. In particular, theoptics of rotationally symmetric lenses, quadrupoles, and systems composed of these element s are discussed extensively. Beam properties such as emittance, brightness, transmissivity and the formation of caustics are outlined.Relativistic motion and spin precession of the electron are treated in a covariant way by introducing the Lorentz-invaria nt universal time and by extending Hamiltons principle from three to four spatial dimensions where thelaboratory time is considered as the fourth pseudo-spatial coordinate. Using this procedure and introducing the self action of the electron, its accompan ying electromagnetic field and its radiation field are calculated for arbitrarymotion. In addition, the Stern-Gerlach effect is revisited for atomic and free electrons

In the book, together with the details of uncertainty calculations for many physical parameters, probability distributionsand their properties a re discussed. Definitions of various terms are given and will help the practicing metrologists to grasp the subject. The book helps to establish international standards for the evaluation of the quality of rawdata obtained from various laboratories for in terpreting the results of various national metrology institutes in an international inter-comparisons. For the routine calibration of instruments, a new idea for the use of pooled varianceis introduced. The uncertainty calculations are explained for (i) i ndependent linear inputs, (ii) non-linear inputs and (iii) correlated inputs. The merits and limitations of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement(GUM) are discussed. Monte Carlo methods for the derivation of the output distribution fro m the input distributions are introduced. The Bayesian alternative for calculation of expanded uncertainty is included.
