Note:Todays semiconductor memory market is divided between two types of memory: DRAM and Flash. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. While DRAM is fast but volatile, Flash is non-volatile but slow. A memory system basedon self-organized quantum dots (QDs) as storage node could combine the advantages of modern DRAM and Flash, thus merging the latters non-volatility with very fast write times. This thesis investigates the electronic properties ofand carrier dynamics in self-organized quantum dots by means of time-resolved capacitance spectroscopy and time-resolved current measurements. The first aim is to study the localization energy of various QD systems in order to assessthe potential of increasing the storage time in QDs to non-volatility. Su rprisingly, it is found that the major impact of carrier capture cross-sections of QDs is to influence, and at times counterbalance, carrier storage in additionto the localization energy. The second aim is to study the coupling between a layer of self-org anized QDs and a two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG), which is relevant for the read-out process in memory systems. The investigation yields thediscovery of the many-particle ground states in the QD ensemble.In addition to its technological relevance, the the sis also offers new insights into the fascinating field of nanostructure physics

Note:Ion Correlations at Electrified Soft Matter Interfaces presents an investigation that combines experiments, theory, and computer simulations to demonstrate that the interdependency between ion correlations and other ioninteractions in solution can ex plain the distribution of ions near an electrified liquid/liquid interface. The properties of this interface are exploited to vary the coupling strength of ion-ion correlations from weak to strong whilemonitoring their influence on ion distributions at th e nanometer scale with X-ray reflectivity and on the macroscopic scale with interfacial tension measurements. This thesis demonstrates that a parameter-free density functional theorythat includes ion-ion correlations and ion-solvent interactions is in agr eement with the data over the entire range of experimentally tunable correlation coupling strengths. The reported findings represent a significant advance towardsunderstanding the nature and role of ion correlations in charged soft-matter. Ion distributio ns underlie many scientific phenomena and technological applications, including electrostatic interactions between charged biomolecules andthe efficiency of energy storage devices. These distributions are determined by interactions dictated by the chemica l properties of the ions and their environment, as well as the long-range nature of the electrostatic force. Thepresence of strong correlations between ions is responsible for counterintuitive effects such as like-charge attraction

Note:Autonomous sensors transmit data and power their electronics without using cables. They can be found in e.g. wireless sensor networks (WSNs) or remote acquisition systems. Although primary batteries provide a simple design forpowering autonomous sens ors, they present several limitations such as limited capacity and power density, and difficulty in predicting their condition and state of charge. An alternative is to extract energy from the ambient (energyharvesting). However, the reduced dimensions of most autonomous sensors lead to a low level of available power from the energy transducer. Thus, efficient methods and circuits to manage and gather the energy are a must. An integralapproach for powering autonomous sensors by considering both primary ba tteries and energy harvesters is presented. Two rather different forms of energy harvesting are also dealt with: optical (or solar) and radiofrequency (RF). Opticalenergy provides high energy density, especially outdoors, whereas RF remote powering is pos sibly the most feasible option for autonomous sensors embedded into the soil or within structures. Throughout different chapters, devices suchas primary and secondary batteries, supercapacitors, and energy transducers are extensively reviewed. Then, circu its and methods found in the literature used to efficiently extract and gather the energy are presented. Finally, newproposals based on the authors own research are analyzed and tested. Every chapter is written to be rather independent, with each incorpor ating the relevant literature references. Powering Autonomous Sensors is intended for a wideaudience working on or interested in the powering of autonomous sensors. Researchers and engineers can find a broad introduction to basic topics in this interestin g and emerging area as well as further insights on the topics of solarand RF harvesting and of circuits and methods to maximize the power extracted from energy transducers
