Title:Measurement and Probability [electronic resource] : A Probabilistic Theory of Measurement with Applications
Author(s): Giovanni Battista Rossi
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Measurement plays a fundamental role both in physical and behavioral sciences, as well as in engineering and technology: it is the link between abstract models and empirical reality and is a privileged method of gatheringinformation from the real wor ld. Is it possible to develop a single theory of measurement for the various domains of science and technology in which measurement is involved? This book takes the challenge by addressing the followingmain issues: What is the meaning of measurement? How do we measure? What can be measured? A theoretical framework that could truly be shared by scientists in different fields, ranging from physics and engineering to psychology isdeveloped. The future in fact will require greater collaboration between scienc e and technology and between different sciences. Measurement, which played a key role in the birth of modern science, can act as an essentialinterdisciplinary tool and language for this new scenario. A sound theoretical basis for addressing key problems i n measurement is provided. These include perceptual measurement, the evaluation of uncertainty, the evaluation ofinter-comparisons, the analysis of risks in decision-making and the characterization of dynamical measurement. Currently, increasing attention is paid to these issues due to their scientific, technical, economic and social impact. Thebook proposes a unified probabilistic approach to them which may allow more rational and effective solutions to be reached. Great care was taken to make the text a s accessible as possible in several ways. Firstly, by giving preferenceto as interdisciplinary a terminology as possible secondly, by carefully defining and discussing all key terms. This ensures that a wide readership, including people from different mat hematical backgrounds and different understandingsof measurement can all benefit from this work. Concerning mathematics, all the main results are preceded by intuitive discussions and illustrated by si

Title:Three Dimensional Creativity [electronic resource] : Three Navigations to Extend our Thoughts
Author(s): Kwang Hyung Lee
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Is creativity something that we are simply born with and cannot hone with effort? Some say that creativity cannot be cultivated. Is it true? In general, our thinking sticks to reality unless there is any external stimulation. Withour thinking fixed o n a certain situation, it becomes difficult to come up with a fresh idea. In this regard, three questions are suggested: (1) Question of Time: When a problem arises, question yourself on a time axis first of all.How would the matter be handled 10 or 20 ye ars from now? (2) Question of Space: Ask yourself some questions on its spatial elements. How would the matter be handled in Saudi Arabia or in China? (3) Question of Field: Apply the givenproblem in a variety of fields. How would the matter be handled in the field of music or electronic engineering? The three questions suggested here are given on the three axes: time, space, and field, and this book deals withtheoretical and practical aspects on the topics. In this way it is a unique book about the syste matic method of developing creativity, which will have appeal to researchers and students in multidisciplinary fields from neuroscience tophysics, and engineering and computer science, as well as a general public

Note:This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the cavitation erosion phenomenon and state-of-the-art research in the field. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of seven chapters, offering a wide range of computationaland experimental appr oaches to cavitation erosion. It includes a general introduction to cavitation and cavitation erosion, a detailed description of facilities and measurement techniques commonly used in cavitation erosion studies, anextensive presentation of various stages of cavitation damage (including incubation and mass loss), and insights into the contribution of computational methods to the analysis of both fluid and material behavior. The proposed approachis based on a detailed description of impact loads generated b y collapsing cavitation bubbles and a physical analysis of the material response to these loads. Part 2 is devoted to a selection of nine papers presented at theInternational Workshop on Advanced Experimental and Numerical Techniques for Cavitation Erosio n (Grenoble, France, 1-2 March 2011), representingthe forefront of research oncavitation erosion. Innovative numerical and experimentalinvestigations illustrate the most advanced breakthroughs in cavitation erosion research.

Title:Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics [electronic resource]
Author(s): P.G Tucker
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrids is a vibrant research area. This book runs through all the potential unsteady modelling fidelity ranges, from low-order to LES. The latter is probably the highest fidelity forpractical aerospace sy stems modelling. Cutting edge new frontiers are defined. One example of a pressing environmental concern is noise. For the accurate prediction of this, unsteady modelling is needed. Hence computationalaeroacoustics is explored. It is also emerging that th ere is a critical need for coupled simulations. Hence, this area is also considered and the tensions of utilizing such simulations with the already expensive LES. This work hasrelevance to the general field of CFD and LES and to a wide variety of non-aero space aerodynamic systems (e.g. cars, submarines, ships, electronics, buildings). Topics treated include unsteady flow techniques LES and hybrids generalnumerical methods computational aeroacoustics computational aeroelasticity coupled simulations and tur bulence and its modelling (LES, RANS, transition, VLES, URANS). The volume concludes by pointing forward to future horizons and inparticular the industrial use of LES. The writing style is accessible and useful to both academics and industrial practitione rs. From the reviews: Tucker's volume provides a very welcome, concise discussion of current capabilitiesfor simulating and modellng unsteady aerodynamic flows. It covers the various possible numerical techniques in good, clear detail and presents a very wide range of practical applications beautifully illustrated in many cases. Thisbook thus provides a valuable text for practicing engineers, a rich source of background information for students and those new to this area of Research & Development, and an excellent state-of-the-art review for others. Title:Introduction to Solid State Physics and Crystalline Nanostructures [electronic resource]
Author(s): Giuseppe Iadonisi
Giovanni Cantele
Maria Luisa Chiofalo
Date:2014
Publisher:Milano : Springer Milan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This textbook provides conceptual, procedural, and factual knowledge on solid state and nanostructure physics. It is designed to acquaint readers with key concepts and their connections, to stimulate intuition and curiosity, andto enable the acquisit ion of competences in general strategies and specific procedures for problem solving and their use in specific applications. To these ends, a multidisciplinary approach is adopted, integrating physics, chemistry, and engineering and reflecting how these di sciplines are converging towards common tools and languages in the field. Each chapter discusses essential ideas before the introduction of formalisms and the stepwise addition ofcomplications. Questions on everyday manifestations of the concepts are incl uded, with reasoned linking of ideas from different chapters and sections and further detail in the appendices. The final section of each chapter describesexperimental methods and strategies that can be used to probe the phenomena under discussion. Solid state and nanostructure physics is constantly growing as a field of study where the fascinating quantum world emerges and otherwiseimaginary things can become real, engineered with increasing creativity and control: from tinier and faster technologies rea lizing quantum information concepts, to understanding of the fundamental laws of Physics. Elements of SolidState Physics and of Crystalline Nanostructures will offer the reader an enjoyable insight into the complex concepts of solid state physics

Title:A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python [electronic resource]
Author(s): Hans Petter Langtangen
Date:2014
Edition:4th ed. 2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, st atistics, physics, biology and finance. The book teaches Matlab-style and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background and it is advantageousto study classical and numerical one-variable c alculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of scienceand engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science. From the reviews: Langtangen does an excellent job of introducing programming as a set of skills in problem solving. He guides the reader into thinking properly about producing program logic and data structures for modeling real-world problems using objectsand functions and embracing the object-oriented paradigm. Summing Up: Highly recommended. F. H. Wild III, Choice, Vol. 47 (8), April 2010 Those of us who have learned scientific programming in Python on the streets could be alittle jealous of students who have the opportunity to take a course out of Langtangens Primer. John D. Cook, The Mathematical Association of Am erica, September 2011 This book goes through Python in particular, and programmingin general, via tasks that scientists will likely perform. It contains valuable informationfor students new to scientific computing and would be the perfect bridge between a n introduction to programming and an advanced course onnumerical methods or computational science. Title:Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Non-Fourier Heat Conduction Based on Thermomass Theory [electronic resource]
Author(s): Hai-Dong Wang
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book mainly focuses on the theoretical and experimental study of non-Fourier heat conduction behavior. A novel thermomass theory is used as the theoretical basis, which provides a general heat conduction equation for theaccurate prediction of no n-Fourier heat conduction. In order to prove the validity of this thermomass theory, a large current was used to heat the metallic nanofilm at the minimum temperature of 3 K. The measured average temperature ofthe nanofilm was notably higher than the pred iction of Fouriers heat diffusion equation, while matching well with the general heat conduction equation. This is the first time that steady non-Fourier heat conduction has beenobserved. Moreover, this book concerns the role of electron-phonon interactio n in metallic nanofilms, which involves the breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law at low temperatures and interfacial thermal resistance at femtosecondtimescales. Readers will find useful information on non-Fourier heat conduction and the latest advances i n the study of charge and heat transport in metallic nanofilms

Title:Life and Death of the Stars [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ganesan Srinivasan
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume is devoted to one of the fascinating things about stars: how they evolve as they age. This evolution is different for stars of different masses. How stars end their lives when their supply of energy is exhausted alsodepends on their masse s. Interestingly, astronomers conjectured about the ultimate fate of the stars even before the details of their evolution became clear. Part I of this book gives an account of the remarkable predictions madeduring the 1920s and 1930s concerning the ultima te fate of stars. Since much of this development hinged on quantum physics that emerged during this time, a detailed introduction to the relevant physics is included in the book. Part IIis a summary of the life history of stars. This discussion is divided into three parts: low-mass stars, like our Sun, intermediate-mass stars, and massive stars. Many of the concepts of contemporary astrophysics were built on thefoundation erected by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar in the 1930s. This book, written during his bi rth centenary, includes a brief biographical sketch of the brilliant scientist, which readers will find fascinating. Reading this book willget young students excited about the presently unfolding revolution in astronomy and the challenges that await them in the world of physics, engineering and technology. General readers will also find the book appealing for its highlyaccessible narrative of the physics of stars. This book is a companionvolume of What are the Stars? by the same author. I know of no other book on the evolution of stars of a similar scope and breadth that is soaccessible for undergraduate students. Title:What are the Stars? [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ganesan Srinivasan
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The outstanding question in astronomy at the turn of the twentieth century was: What are the stars and why are they as they are? In this volume, the story of how the answer to this fundamental question was unravelled is narratedin an informal style, with emphasis on the underlying physics. Although the foundations of astrophysics were laid down by 1870, and the edifice was sufficiently built up by 1920, the definitive proof of many of the prescientconjectures made in the 1920s and 1930s came to be es tablished less than ten years ago. This book discusses these recent developments in the context of discussing the nature of the stars, their stability and the source of the energythey radiate. Reading this book will get young students excited about the pr esently unfolding revolution in astronomy and the challenges that await them in the world of physics, engineering and technology. General readers will alsofind the book appealing for its highly accessible narrative of the physics of stars. ... The readers will find Dr Srinivasan, an internationally acclaimed leader in this enterprise, to be a clear and enthusiastic guide to thewonders and mysteries of the cosmos. Lord Martin Rees Astronomer Royal Master of Trinity College, Cambridge I know of no comparabl e book in the present-day literature that so successfully conveys theexcitement of the development of ideas pertaining to the physics of stars, including the newest discoveries, and at the same time explains the fundamentals so well.
