Title: | Non-equilibrium Energy Transformation Processes [electronic resource] : Theoretical Description at the Level of Molecular Structures |
Author(s): |
Viktor Holubec |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Various experimental techniques have been advanced in recent years to measure non-equilibrium energy transformations on themicroscopic scale of single molecules. In general, the systems studied inthecorrespondingexperiments are exposed to strong ther mal fluctuations and thus the relevant energetic variables such as work and heat become stochastic. This thesis addresses challenging theoretical problems in this active field ofcurrent research: 1) Exact analytical solutions of work and heat distribution s for isothermal non-equilibrium processes in suitable models are obtained 2) Corresponding solutions for cyclic processes involving two different heatreservoirs are found 3) Optimization of periodic driving protocols for such cyclic processes with respec t to maximal output power, efficiency, and minimal power fluctuations is studied. The exact solutions for work and heatdistributionsprovide areference for theoretical investigations of more complicated models, giving insight into the structure of the tail of work distributions andserving asvaluable test cases for simulations of the underlyingstochastic processes |

Title: | Discrete Dynamical Models [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Ernesto Salinelli Franco Tomarelli |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides an introduction to the analysis of discrete dynamical systems. The content is presented by an unitary approach that blends the perspective of mathematical modeling together with the ones of several disciplineas Mathematical Analysi s, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Systems Theory and Probability. After a preliminary discussion of several models, the main tools for the study of linear and non-linear scalar dynamical systems arepresented, paying particular attention to the stabil ity analysis. Linear difference equations are studied in detail and an elementary introduction of Z and Discrete Fourier Transform is presented. A whole chapter is devoted to thestudy of bifurcations and chaotic dynamics. One-step vector-valued dynamical systems are the subject of three chapters, where the reader can find the applications to positive systems, Markov chains, networks and search engines. Thebook is addressed mainly to students in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Eco nomics. The exposition is self-contained: some appendices present prerequisites, algorithms and suggestions for computer simulations. The analysis of several examples is enriched by the proposition of many related exercises of increasing difficulty in the last chapter the detailed solution is given for most of them |

Title: | Code Generation with Templates [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Jeroen Arnoldus Mark van den Brand A Serebrenik J.J Brunekreef |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Paris : Atlantis Press : Imprint: Atlantis Press |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Templates are used to generate all kinds of text, including computer code. The last decade, the use of templates gained a lot of popularity due to the increase of dynamic web applications. Templates are a tool for programmers, andimplementations of t emplate engines are most times based on practical experience rather than based on a theoretical background. This book reveals the mathematical background of templates and shows interesting findings for improvingthe practical use of templates. First, a fr amework to determine the necessary computational power for the template metalanguage is presented. The template metalanguage does not need to be Turing-complete to be useful. Anon-Turing-complete metalanguage enforces separation of concerns between the vi ew and model. Second, syntactical correctness of all languages of the templates and generated code is ensured. This includes the syntactical correctness ofthe template metalanguage and the output language. Third, case studies show that the achieved goals are applicable in practice. It is even shown that syntactical correctness helps to prevent cross-site scripting attacks in webapplications. The target audience of this book is twofold. The first group exists of researcher interested in the mathematical b ackground of templates. The second group exists of users of templates. This includes designers oftemplate engines on one side and programmers and web designers using templates on the other side |

Title: | Black Hole Astrophysics [electronic resource] : The Engine Paradigm |
Author(s): |
David L Meier |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | As a result of significant research over the past 20 years, black holes are now linked to some of the most spectacular and exciting phenomena in the Universe, ranging in size from those that have the same mass as stars to thesuper-massive objects tha t lie at the heart of most galaxies, including our own Milky Way. This book first introduces the properties of simple isolated holes, then adds in complications like rotation, accretion, radiation, and magneticfields, finally arriving at a basic understan ding of how these immense engines work. Black Hole Astrophysics reviews our current knowledge of cosmic black holes and how they generate the most powerful observed pheonomena in theUniverse highlights the latest, most up-to-date theories and discoverie s in this very active area of astrophysical research demonstrates why we believe that black holes are responsible for important phenomena such as quasars, microquasars and gammaray bursts explains to the reader the nature of the violent and spectacular o utfl ows (winds and jets) generated by black hole accretion |

Note: | Dr. Bernard H. Lavenda has written A New Perspective on Thermodynamics to combine an old look at thermodynamics with a new foundation. The book presents a historical perspective, which unravels the current presentation ofthermodynamics found in stand ard texts, and which emphasizes the fundamental role that Carnot played in the development of thermodynamics. A New Perspective on Thermodynamics will: Chronologically unravel the development of theprinciples of thermodynamics and how they were conceived by their discoverers Bring the theory of thermodynamics up to the present time and indicate areas of further development with the union of information theory and the theory ofmeans and their inequalities. New areas include nonextensive thermodynamics, the thermodynamics of coding theory, multifractals, and strange attractors. Reintroduce important, yet nearly forgotten, teachings of N.L. Sardi CarnotHighlight conceptual flaws in timely topics such as endoreversible engines, finite-time thermodynamics, geo metrization of thermodynamics, and nonequilibrium work from equilibrium free energy differences. Dr. Bernard H. Lavenda isProfessor of Physical Chemistry at Universita degli Studi di Camerino, Italy. He is recipient of the 2009 Telesio-Galeli Prize in Phy sics for his work on irreversible thermodynamics |

Note: | What do combustion engines, fusion reactors, weather forecast, ocean flows, our sun, and stellar explosions in outer space have in common? Of course, the physics and the length and time scales are vastly different in all cases, but it is also well kno wn that in all of them, on some relevant length scales, the material flows that govern the dynamical and/or secular evolution of the systems are chaotic and often unpredictable: they are said to be turbulent. Theinterdisciplinary aspects of turbulence are brought together in this volume containing chapters written by experts from very different fields, including geophysics, astrophysics, and engineering. It covers several subjects on whichconsiderable progress was made during the last decades, from questi ons concerning the very nature of turbulence to some practical applications. These subjects include: a basic introduction into turbulence, statistical mechanics andnonlinear dynamics, turbulent convection in stars, atmospheric turbulence in the context of numerical weather predictions, magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, turbulent combustion with application to supernova explosions, and finally thenumerical treatment of the multi-scale character of turbulence |

Title: | Black Hole Gravitohydromagnetics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Brian Punsly |
Date: | 2009 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Black hole gravitohydromagnetics (GHM) is developed from the rudiments to the frontiers of research in this book. GHM describes plasma interactions that combine the effects of gravity and a strong magnetic field, in the vicinity(ergosphere) of a rapi dly rotating black hole. This topic was created in response to the astrophysical quest to understand the central engines of radio loud extragalactic radio sources. The theory describes a torsional tug of warbetween rotating ergospheric plasma and the dist ant asymptotic plasma that extracts the rotational inertia of the black hole. The recoil from the struggle between electromagnetic and gravitational forces near the event horizon ismanifested as a powerful pair of magnetized particle beams (jets) that are ejected at nearly the speed of light. These bipolar jets feed large-scale magnetized plasmoids on scales as large as millions of light years (the radio lobes ofextragalactic radio sources). This interaction can initiate jets that transport energy fluxes exceeding 1047 ergs/s. This second edition of the book is updated throughout and contains a completely new chapter discussing state of theart and results of numerical simulations of ergospheric disk jets occuring in magnetohydrodynamic accretion flows |

Title: | Laser Ablation and its Applications [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Claude Phipps |
Date: | 2007 |
Publisher: | Boston, MA : Springer US |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Laser ablation describes the interaction of intense optical fields with matter, in which atoms are selectively driven off by thermal or nonthermal mechanisms. The field of laser ablation physics is advancing so rapidly that itsprincipal results are s een only in specialized journals and conferences. This is the first book that combines the most recent results in this rapidly advancing field with authoritative treatment of laser ablation and its applications, including the physics of high-power laser-ma tter interaction. Many practical applications exist, ranging from inertial confinement fusion to propulsion of aerostats for pollution monitoring to laser ignition of hypersonic engines tolaser cleaning nanoscale contaminants in high-volume computer hard drive manufacture to direct observation of the electronic or dissociative states in atoms and molecules, to studying the properties of materials during 200kbar shocksdeveloped in 200fs. Selecting topics which are representative of such a broad field is di fficult. Laser Ablation and its Applications emphasizes the wide range of these topics rather than - as is so often the case in advanced science focusing on one specialty or discipline. The book is divided into four sections: theory and modeling, ultrafas t interactions, material processing and laser-matter interaction in novel regimes. The latter range from MALDI to ICF,SNOMs and femtosecond nanosurgery to laser space propulsion. The book arose from the SPIE series of High Power Laser Ablation Symposia wh ich began in 1998. It is intended for a graduate course in laser interactions with plasmas andmaterials, but it should be accessible to anyone with a graduate degree in physics or engineering. It is also intended as a major reference work to familiarize s cientists just entering the field with laser ablation and itsapplications |
