Title: | Weakly Wandering Sequences in Ergodic Theory [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Stanley Eigen Arshag Hajian Yuji Ito Vidhu Prasad |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The appearance of weakly wandering (ww) sets and sequences for ergodic transformations over half a century ago was an unexpected and surprising event. In time it was shown that ww and related sequences reflected significant anddeep properties of ergo dic transformations that preserve an infinite measure. This monograph studies in a systematic way the role of ww and related sequences in the classification of ergodic transformations preserving an infinitemeasure. Connections of these sequences to additi ve number theory and tilings of the integers are also discussed. The material presented is self-contained and accessible to graduate students. A basic knowledge of measure theory isadequate for the reader |

Daniel W Stroock |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides a rigorous but elementary introduction to the theory of Markov Processes on a countable state space. It should be accessible to students with a solid undergraduate background in mathematics, including studentsfrom engineering, econ omics, physics, and biology. Topics covered are: Doeblin's theory, general ergodic properties, and continuous time processes.Applications are dispersed throughout the book. In addition, a whole chapter isdevoted to reversible processes and the use of thei r associated Dirichlet forms to estimate the rate of convergence to equilibrium. These results are then applied to the analysis of the Metropolis (a.k.a simulated annealing) algorithm. The corrected and enlarged 2nd edition contains a new chapter in which the author develops computational methods for Markov chains on a finite state space. Most intriguing isthe section with a new technique for computing stationarymeasures, which is applied to derivations of Wilson's algorithm and Kirchoff's formula for span ning trees in a connected graph |

Title: | Nonequilibrium and Irreversibility [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Giovanni Gallavotti |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book concentrates on the properties of the stationary states in chaotic systems of particles or fluids, leaving aside the theory of the way they can be reached. The stationary states of particles or of fluids (understood asprobability distributi ons on microscopic configurations or on the fields describing continua) have received important new ideas and data from numerical simulations and reviews are needed. The starting point is to find out which timeinvariant distributions come into play in phy sics. A special feature of this book is the historical approach. To identify the problems the author analyzes the papers of the founding fathers Boltzmann, Clausius and Maxwell includingtranslations of the relevant (parts of ) historical documents. He als o establishes a close link between treatment of irreversible phenomena in statistical mechanics and the theory of chaotic systems at and beyond the onset ofturbulence as developed by Sinai, Ruelle, Bowen (SRB) and others: the author gives arguments intend ing to support strongly the viewpoint that stationary states in or out of equilibrium can be described in a unified way. In this book itis the chaotic hypothesis, which can be seen as an extension of the classical ergodic hypothesis to non equilibrium phe nomena, that plays the central role. It is shown that SRB - often considered as a kind of mathematicalplayground with no impact on physical reality - has indeed a sound physical interpretation an observation which to many might be new and a very welcome i nsight. Following this, many consequences of the chaotic hypothesis are analyzedin chapter 3 - 4, and in chapter 5 a few applications are proposed. Chapter 6 is historical: carefully analyzing the old literature on the subject, especially ergodic theory a nd its relevance for statistical mechanics an approachwhich gives the book a very personal touch. The book contains an extensive coverage of current research (partly from the authors and his coautho |

Title: | Invariant Probabilities of Transition Functions [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Radu Zaharopol |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The structure of the set of all the invariant probabilities and the structure of various types of individual invariant probabilities of a transition function are two topics of significant interest in the theory of transitionfunctions, and are studied in this book. The results obtained are useful in ergodic theory and the theory of dynamical systems, which, in turn, can be applied in various other areas (like number theory). They are illustrated usingtransition functions defined by flows, semiflows, a nd one-parameter convolution semigroups of probability measures. In this book, all results on transition probabilities that have been published by the author between 2004 and 2008 areextended to transition functions. The proofs of the results obtained are new. For transition functions that satisfy very general conditions the book describes an ergodic decomposition that provides relevant information on the structureof the corresponding set of invariant probabilities. Ergodic decomposition means a splitting of the state space, where the invariant ergodic probability measures play a significant role. Other topics covered include: characterizationsof the supports of various types of invariant probability measures and the use of these to obtain criteria for un ique ergodicity, and the proofs of two mean ergodic theorems for a certain type of transition functions. The book will beof interest to mathematicians working in ergodic theory, dynamical systems, or the theory of Markov processes. Biologists, physicists and economists interested in interacting particle systems and rigorous mathematics will also findthis book a valuable resource. Parts of it are suitable for advanced graduate courses. Prerequisites are basic notions and results on functional analysis, gen eral topology, measure theory, the Bochner integral and some of itsapplications |

Title: | Analytic and Probabilistic Approaches to Dynamics in Negative Curvature [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Franoise Dal'Bo Marc Peign Andrea Sambusetti |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The work of E. Hopf and G.A. Hedlund, in the 1930s, on transitivity and ergodicity of the geodesic flow for hyperbolic surfaces, marked the beginning of the investigation of the statistical properties and stochastic behavior ofthe flow. The first cen tral limit theorem for the geodesic flow was proved in the 1960s by Y. Sinai for compact hyperbolic manifolds. Since then, strong relationships have been found between the fields of ergodic theory, analysis, andgeometry. Different approaches and new tools have been developed to study the geodesic flow, including measure theory, thermodynamic formalism, transfer operators, Laplace operators, and Brownian motion. All these different points ofview have led to a deep understanding of more general dynamical sy stems, in particular the so-called Anosov systems, with applications to geometric problems such as counting, equirepartition, mixing, and recurrence properties of theorbits. This book comprises two independent texts that provide a self-contained introduct ion to two different approaches to the investigation of hyperbolic dynamics. The first text, by S. Le Borgne, explains the method of martingalesfor the central limit theorem. This approach can be used in several situations, even for weakly hyperbolic flow s, and the author presents a good number of examples and applications to equirepartition and mixing. The second text, by F.Faure and M. Tsujii, concerns the semiclassical approach, by operator theory: chaotic dynamics is described through the spectrum of the associated transfer operator, with applications to the asymptotic counting of periodic orbits. Thebook will be of interest for a broad audience, from PhD and Post-Doc students to experts working on geometry and dynamics |

Title: | Dynamical Systems [electronic resource] : An Introduction |
Author(s): |
Luis Barreira Claudia Valls |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | London : Springer London : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The theory of dynamical systems is a broad and active research subject with connections to most parts of mathematics. Dynamical Systems: An Introduction undertakes the difficult task to provide a self-contained and compactintroduction. Topics covered include topological, low-dimensional, hyperbolic and symbolic dynamics, as well as a brief introduction to ergodic theory. In particular, the authors consider topological recurrence, topological entropy, homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of the circle, S harkovski's ordering, the Poincar-Bendixson theory, and the construction of stable manifolds, as well as an introduction to geodesic flows and the study of hyperbolicity (the latteris often absent in a first introduction). Moreover, the authors introduce the basics of symbolic dynamics, the construction of symbolic codings, invariant measures, Poincar's recurrence theorem and Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. Theexposition is mathematically rigorous, concise and direct: all statements (except for some results f rom other areas) are proven. At the same time, the text illustrates the theory with many examples and 140 exercises of variable levelsof difficulty. The only prerequisites are a background in linear algebra, analysis and elementary topology. This is a tex tbook primarily designed for a one-semester or two-semesters course at the advanced undergraduate or beginninggraduate levels. It can also be used for self-study and as a starting point for more advanced topics |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Over the last two decades, the dimension theory of dynamical systems has progressively developed into an independent and extremely active field of research. The main aim of this volume is to offer a unified, self-containedintroduction to the interpla y of these three main areas of research: ergodic theory, hyperbolic dynamics, and dimension theory. It starts with the basic notions of the first two topics and ends with a sufficiently high-levelintroduction to the third. Furthermore, it includes an intr oduction to the thermodynamic formalism, which is an important tool in dimension theory. The volume is primarily intended for graduate students interested in dynamical systems,as well as researchers in other areas who wish to learn about ergodic theory, t hermodynamic formalism, or dimension theory of hyperbolic dynamics at an intermediate level in a sufficiently detailed manner. In particular, it can be usedas a basis for graduate courses on any of these three subjects. The text can also be used for self- study: it is self-contained, and with the exception of some well-known basic facts from other areas, all statements include detailedproofs |

Edition: | Completely Revised and Enlarged 2nd Edition |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |

Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Since the publication of the first edition of the present volume in 1980, the stochastic stability of differential equations has become a very popular subject of research in mathematics and engineering. To date exact formulas forthe Lyapunov exponent , the criteria for the moment and almost sure stability, and for the existence of stationary and periodic solutions of stochastic differential equations have been widely used in the literature. In this updatedvolume readers will find important new results on the moment Lyapunov exponent, stability index and some other fields, obtained after publication of the first edition, and a significantly expanded bibliography. This volume provides asolid foundation for students in graduate courses in mathematics and its applications. It is also useful for those researchers who would like to learn more about this subject, to start their research in this area or to study theproperties of concrete mechanical systems subjected to random perturbations |

Note: | The subjects of stochastic processes, information theory, and Lie groups are usually treated separately from each other. This unique two-volume set presents these topics in a unified setting, thereby building bridges betweenfields that are rarely stu died by the same people. Unlike the many excellent formal treatments available for each of these subjects individually, the emphasis in both of these volumes is on the use of stochastic, geometric, andgroup-theoretic concepts in the modeling of physical p henomena. Volume 1 establishes the geometric and statistical foundations required to understand the fundamentals of continuous-time stochastic processes, differential geometry, andthe probabilistic foundations of information theory. Volume 2 delves deeper into relationships between these topics, including stochastic geometry, geometric aspects of the theory of communications and coding, multivariate statisticalanalysis, and error propagation on Lie groups. Key features and topics of Volume 2: * The author reviews the concept ofandfunctions and integration onLie groups with many concrete examples. * Extensive exercises andmotivating examples make the work suitable as a textbook for use in courses that emphasize applied stochastic processes on Lie groups or geometric aspects of probability and statistics. *Specific application areas are explored, including biomolecular statistical mechanics and information-driven motion in robotics. * The concrete presentation style makes it easy for readers to obtain numeri cal solutions for their own problems the emphasis is on how tocalculate quantities rather than how to prove theorems. * Modern problems at the interface of mechanics, control theory, and communications are handled in a unified framework and multiple direc tions for future research are explored.Stochastic Models, Information Theory, and Lie Groups will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practition |

Note: | Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complexsystems are systems that c omprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. Thesesystems are often characterized by extreme sensi tivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single sourcework provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applicatio ns of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifracticals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential referenc e for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers |

Date: | 2011 |
Publisher: | London : Springer London |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | It is commonly believed that chaos is linked to non-linearity, however many (even quite natural) linear dynamical systems exhibit chaotic behavior. The study of these systems is a young and remarkably active field of research, which has seen many land mark results over the past two decades. Linear dynamics lies at the crossroads of several areas of mathematics including operator theory, complex analysis, ergodic theory and partial differential equations. Atthe same time its basic ideas can be easily un derstood by a wide audience. Written by two renowned specialists, Linear Chaos provides a welcome introduction to this theory. Split into two parts, part I presents a self-containedintroduction to the dynamics of linear operators, while part II covers sel ected, largely independent topics from linear dynamics. More than 350 exercises and many illustrations are included, and each chapter contains a furtherSources and Comments section. The only prerequisites are a familiarity with metric spaces, the basic th eory of Hilbert and Banach spaces and fundamentals of complex analysis. More advanced tools, only needed occasionally, areprovided in two appendices. A self-contained exposition, this book will be suitable for self-study and will appeal to advanced underg raduate or beginning graduate students. It will also be of use to researchers in other areas ofmathematics such as partial differential equations, dynamical systems and ergodic theory |

Note: | This text is a rigorous introduction to ergodic theory, developing the machinery of conditional measures and expectations, mixing, and recurrence. Beginning by developing the basics of ergodic theory and progressing to describesome recent application s to number theory, this book goes beyond the standard texts in this topic. Applications include Weyl's polynomial equidistribution theorem, the ergodic proof of Szemeredi's theorem, the connection between thecontinued fraction map and the modular surface , and a proof of the equidistribution of horocycle orbits. Ergodic Theory with a view towards Number Theory will appeal to mathematicians with some standard background in measure theory andfunctional analysis. No background in ergodic theory or Lie theory is assumed, and a number of exercises and hints to problems are included, making this the perfect companion for graduate students and researchers in ergodic theory, homogenous dynamics or number theory |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Ramsey theory is a relatively new, approximately 100 year-old direction of fascinating mathematical thought that touches on many classic fields of mathematics such as combinatorics, number theory, geometry, ergodic theory, topology, combinatorial geom etry, set theory, and measure theory. Ramsey theory possesses its own unifying ideas, and some of its results are among the most beautiful theorems of mathematics. The underlying theme of Ramsey theory canbe formulated as: any finite coloring of a large e nough system contains a monochromatic subsystem of higher degree of organization than the system itself, or as T.S. Motzkin famously put it, absolute disorder is impossible. RamseyTheory: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow explores the theorys history, recent developments, and some promising future directions through invited surveys written by prominent researchers in the field. The first three surveys providehistorical background on the subject the last three address Euclidean Ramsey theory and related color ing problems. In addition, open problems posed throughout the volume and in the concluding open problem chapter will appeal tograduate students and mathematicians alike. Contributors: J. Burkert, A. Dudek, R.L. Graham, A. Gyrfs, P.D. Johnson, Jr., S.P. Ra dziszowski, V. Rdl, J.H. Spencer, A. Soifer, E. Tressler |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | This volume collects recent works on weakly dependent, long-memory and multifractal processes and introduces new dependence measures for studying complex stochastic systems. Other topics include the statistical theory forbootstrap and permutation sta tistics for infinite variance processes, the dependence structure of max-stable processes, and the statistical properties of spectral estimators of the long memory parameter. The asymptotic behavior ofFejr graph integrals and their use for proving central limit theorems for tapered estimators are investigated. New multifractal processes are introduced and their multifractal properties analyzed. Wavelet-based methods are used tostudy multifractal processes with different multiresolution quantities, and to detect changes in the variance of random processes. Linear regression models with long-range dependent errors are studied, as is the issue of detectingchanges in their parameters |

Title: | Hybrid Switching Diffusions [electronic resource] : Properties and Applications |
Author(s): |
G. George Yin Chao Zhu |
Date: | 2010 |
Edition: | First |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | This book presents a comprehensive study of hybrid switching diffusion processes and their applications. The motivations for studying such processes originate from emerging and existing applications in wireless communications, signal processing, queue ing networks, production planning, biological systems, ecosystems, financial engineering, and modeling, analysis, and control and optimization of large-scale systems, under the influence of random environment. One of the distinct features of the processes under consideration is the coexistence of continuous dynamics and discrete events. This book is written for applied mathematicians, applied probabilists, systems engineers, controlscientists, operations researchers, and financial analysts. Selected materi als from the book may also be used in a graduate level course on stochastic processes and applications or a course on hybrid systems. A large part of the bookis concerned with the discrete event process depending on the continuous dynamics. In addition to the existence and uniqueness of solutions of switching diffusion equations, regularity, Feller and strong Feller properties, continuousand smooth dependence on initial data, recurrence, ergodicity, invariant measures, and stability are dealt with. Numeri cal methods for solutions of switching diffusions are developed algorithms for approximation to invariant measuresare investigated. Two-time-scale models are also examined. The results presented in the book are useful to researchers and practitioners who need to use stochastic models to deal with hybrid stochastic systems, and to treat real-worldproblems when continuous dynamics and discrete events are intertwined, in which the traditional approach using stochastic differential equations aloneis no longer adequate |

Note: | This book highlights various topics on measure theory and vividly demonstrates that the different questions of this theory are closely connected with the central measure extension problem. Several important aspects of the measureextension problem are considered separately: set-theoretical, topological and algebraic. Also, various combinations (e.g., algebraic-topological) of these aspects are discussed by stressing their specific features. Several new methodsare presented for solving the above mentio ned problem in concrete situations. In particular, the following new results are obtained: the measure extension problem is completely solved for invariant or quasi-invariant measures onsolvable uncountable groups non-separable extensions of invariant mea sures are constructed by using their ergodic components absolutely non-measurable additive functionals are constructed for certain classes of measures thestructure of algebraic sums of measure zero sets is investigated. The material presented in this book is essentially self-contained and is oriented towards a wide audience of mathematicians (including postgraduate students). Newresults and facts given in the book are based on (or closely connected with) traditional topics of set theory, measure theory an d general topology such as: infinite combinatorics, Martin's Axiom and the Continuum Hypothesis, Luzin andSierpinski sets, universal measure zero sets, theorems on the existence of measurable selectors, regularity properties of Borel measures on metric sp aces, and so on. Essential information on these topics is also included in the text(primarily, in the form of Appendixes or Exercises), which enables potential readers to understand the proofs and follow the constructions in full details. This not only al lows the book to be used as a monograph but also as a course oflectures for students whose interests lie in set theory, real analysis, measure theory and general topology |

Note: | This volume presents a general smooth ergodic theory for deterministic dynamical systems generated by non-invertible endomorphisms, mainly concerning the relations between entropy, Lyapunov exponents and dimensions. The authorsmake extensive use of t he combination of the inverse limit space technique and the techniques developed to tackle random dynamical systems. The most interesting results in this book are (1) the equivalence between the SRB property andPesins entropy formula (2) the generalized L edrappier-Young entropy formula (3) exact-dimensionality for weakly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and for expanding maps. The proof of the exact-dimensionality for weakly hyperbolicdiffeomorphisms seems more accessible than that of Barreira et al. It also in spires the authors to argue to what extent the famous Eckmann-Ruelle conjecture and many other classical results for diffeomorphisms and for flows hold true. After a careful reading of the book, one can systematically learn the Pesin theory for endomorphis ms as well as the typical tricks played in the estimation of the number of balls of certain properties, which are extensively used inChapters IX and X |

Note: | Polymer chains that interact with themselves and/or with their environment are fascinating objects, displaying a range of interesting physical and chemical phenomena. The focus in this monograph is on the mathematical descriptionof some of these phen omena, with particular emphasis on phase transitions as a function of interaction parameters, associated critical behavior and space-time scaling. Topics include: self-repellent polymers, self-attracting polymers, polymers interacting with interfaces, char ged polymers, copolymers near linear or random selective interfaces, polymers interacting with random substrate and directed polymers in random environment. Different techniques are exposed, including the method of local times, large deviations, the lace e xpansion, generating functions, the method of excursions, ergodic theory, partial annealing estimates, coarse-graining techniques and martingales. Thus, this monographoffers a mathematical panorama of polymer chains, which even today holds plenty of chall enges |

Note: | The study of hyperbolic systems is a core theme of modern dynamics. On surfaces the theory of the fine scale structure of hyperbolic invariant sets and their measures can be described in a very complete and elegant way, and is thesubject of this book , largely self-contained, rigorously and clearly written. It covers the most important aspects of the subject and is based on several scientific works of the leading research workers in this field. This book fills agap in the literature of dynamics. We hi ghly recommend it for any Ph.D student interested in this area. The authors are well-known experts in smooth dynamical systems and ergodic theory |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Part of Tsinghua University Texts, Statistical Properties of Deterministic Systems discusses the fundamental theory and computational methods of the statistical properties of deterministic discrete dynamical systems. Afterintroducing some basic resul ts from ergodic theory, two problems related to the dynamical system are studied: first the existence of absolute continuous invariant measures, and then their computation. They correspond to the functionalanalysis and numerical analysis of the Frobenius- Perron operator associated with the dynamical system. The book can be used as a text for graduate students in applied mathematics and in computational mathematics it can also serve as areference book for researchers in the physical sciences, life sciences , and engineering. Dr. Jiu Ding is a professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Southern Mississippi Dr. Aihui Zhou is a professor at theAcademy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences |
