Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Despite significant achievements, the discipline of supply chain management is still unable to satisfactorily handle many practical real-world challenges. The authors of Networks Against Time claim that a unified supply chainnetwork analytics framewo rk is needed which should be able to handle optimization and competitive behavior while also maintain relevance to many industrial sectors in which perishable products are prominent, from healthcare to food andfrom fashion apparel to technology. This Brie f provides a wide range of critical supply chain problems which are modeled as generalized networks. Guidelines are provided to determine the arc multipliers that capture perish ability ofthe product whether food, radioisotopes, or even highly perishable blood in healthcare over space and time. Through case studies the authors portray the application of the models and algorithms to real-world sectors which illustratethe power of the framework in practice. The models and algorithms are fully described alon g with the input and output data in the case studies. This level of transparency is useful pedagogically as well as for future research and forapplications in practice. Researchers and practitioners in mathematics, in operations research and management sc ience, operations management, as well as in economics and computer science will find this book useful to gain a broaderappreciation of the richness of network supply chain structures, processes, and applications. This book can also be used by advanced und ergraduate students and graduate students in the disciplines noted above to familiarize themselveswith methodologies and supply chain network models and applications

Title:Colloids and the Depletion Interaction [electronic resource]
Author(s): Henk N.W Lekkerkerker
Remco Tuinier
Date:2011
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Colloids are submicron particles that are ubiquitous in nature (milk, clay, blood) and industrial products (paints, drilling fluids, food). It has been known for a long time that adding salt or polymer influences thecharacteristics of colloidal suspe nsions. Think of the Egyptians who engineered ink by adding gum Arabic to soot particles a few thousand years ago. Unknowingly, they were taking advantage of the anchoring of the polysaccharides ontothe colloids to provide the stabilization of the soot pa rticles that eventually provided an ink to write on papyrus. The effect of charges and polymers attached to the surface of colloidal particles on their stability has beenunderstood and studied extensively in the last century. But the more elusive, albeit ubiquitous, effects of the addition of free polymers and small colloids as depletants to colloidal dispersions have become in focus recently. Inrecent decades it has become clear that adding such depletants allows one to tune the interactions between the colloids and in this way control the stability, structure and rheological properties of colloidal dispersions. This bookoffers a concise introduction to the fundamentals of depletion effects and their influence on the phase behavior of colloidal dispersio ns. These fundamental principles promote insight and the intuitive sense needed to isolate issuesrelated to depletion effects in technological problems and design critical experiments. In an introductory chapter, the authors provide a historical perspecti ve and the applications of depletion effects not only in colloid science butalso in biology, medicine and technology. In the subsequent chapter they address the basics of depletion interactions, including the effects of anisotropic depletants. The next ch apter covers the basics of phase behavior in colloidaldispersions, followed by extensions towards mixtures of spherical colloids with polymers or small colloids inducing depletion forces. Finally, the

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Quantum mechanics is one of mankind's most remarkable intellectual achievements. Stunningly successful and elegant, it challenges our deepest intuitions about the world. In this book, seventeen physicists and philosophers, alldeeply concerned with un derstanding quantum mechanics, reply to Schlosshauer's penetrating questions about the central issues. They grant us an intimate look at their radically different ways of making sense of the theory'sstrangeness. What is quantum mechanics about? What is it telling us about nature? Can quantum information or new experiments help lift the fog? And where are we headed next? Everyone interested in the contemporary but oftenlongstanding conundrums of quantum theory, whether lay reader or expert, will find much food for thought in these pages. A wealth of personal reflections and anecdotes guarantee an engaging read. Title:Extensions of MoserBangert Theory [electronic resource] : Locally Minimal Solutions
Author(s): Paul H Rabinowitz
Edward W Stredulinsky
Date:2011
Publisher:Boston : Birkhuser Boston
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:With the goal of establishing a version for partial differential equations (PDEs) of the AubryMather theory of monotone twist maps, Moser and then Bangert studied solutions of their model equations that possessed certainminimality and monotonicity pr operties. This monograph presents extensions of the MoserBangert approach that include solutions of a family of nonlinear elliptic PDEs onRn and an AllenCahn PDE model of phase transitions. Afterrecalling the relevant MoserBangert results, Extensions of M oserBangert Theory pursues the rich structure of the set of solutions of a simpler model case, expanding upon the studies of Moser and Bangert to include solutions thatmerely have local minimality properties. Subsequent chapters build upon the introductor y results, making the monograph self contained. Part I introduces a variational approach involving a renormalized functional to characterize thebasic heteroclinic solutions obtained by Bangert. Following that, Parts II and III employ these basic solutions together with constrained minimization methods to construct multitransition heteroclinic and homoclinic solutions onRTn-1and R2Tn-2, respectively, as local minima of the renormalized functional. The work is intended for mathematicians who specialize in p artial differential equations and may also be used as a text for a graduate topics coursein PDEs

Title:Maximum Penalized Likelihood Estimation [electronic resource] : Volume II: Regression
Author(s): Vincent N LaRiccia
Paul P Eggermont
Date:2009
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This is the second volume of a text on the theory and practice of maximum penalized likelihood estimation. It is intended for graduate students in statistics, operations research and applied mathematics, as well as for researchersand practitioners in the field. The present volume deals with nonparametric regression. The emphasis in this volume is on smoothing splines of arbitrary order, but other estimators (kernels, local and global polynomials) pass review aswell. Smoothing splines and local polyno mials are studied in the context of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The connection between smoothing splines and reproducing kernels is of course well-known. The new twist is that letting theinnerproduct depend on the smoothing parameter opens up new p ossibilities. It leads to asymptotically equivalent reproducing kernel estimators (without qualifications), and thence, via uniform error bounds for kernel estimators, touniform error bounds for smoothing splines and via strong approximations, to confiden ce bands for the unknown regression function. The reason for studying smoothing splines of arbitrary order is that one wants to use them for dataanalysis. Regarding the actual computation, the usual scheme based on spline interpolation is useful for cubic smoothing splines only. For splines of arbitrary order, the Kalman filter is the most important method, the intricacies ofwhich are explained in full. The authors also discuss simulation results for smoothing splines and local and global polynomials for a variety of test problems as well as results on confidence bands for the unknown regression functionbased on undersmoothed quintic smoothing splines with remarkably good coverage probabilities. P.P.B. Eggermont and V.N. LaRiccia are with the Statistics P rogram of the Department of Food and Resource Economics in the College ofAgriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Delaware, and the authors of Maximum Penalized Likelihood Estimation: Volu

Title:Terraforming [electronic resource] : The Creating of Habitable Worlds
Author(s): Martin Beech
Date:2009
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:We all know that Earths population is growing at an alarming rate, and vital resources are becoming scarce. There simply isnt enough space to grow the food the bulging human populations will need in the future. An energycrisis is also upon us. What h appens when the oil runs out or becomes too costly to support us in the lifestyles to which weve become accustomed? What do we do? There are no easy solutions. Planned population growth would certainlybe a possible solution, but there are probably already too many mouths too feed, and few nations would be willing to pass or enforce laws limiting their countrys birth rate. Some scientists have suggested the answer lies inhumankinds spacefaring nature and fantastic engineering capabilities. We know that the re are other terrestrial bodies in our Solar System that share some features with Earth. Can they be made habitable, or at least be used to growfood or supply energy to Earths expanding populations? What would it take? Which of those bodies are our best h ope? Can we create an atmosphere where there is none or change a poisonous atmosphere to one we can breathe? These andother questions concerning modern-day realities and the future possibilities of terraformingthe science of making of new worlds (even ext rasolar ones) habitable for humansare tackled in this engrossing and revealing study byMartin Beech

Note:Emulsions are generally made out of two immiscible fluids like oil and water, one being dispersed in the second in the presence of surface-active compounds. They are used as intermediate or end products in a huge range of areasincluding the food, chem ical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, paint, and coating industries. Besides the broad domain of technological interest, emulsions are raising a variety of fundamental questions at the frontier between physics andchemistry. This book aims to give an overview of the most recent advances in emulsion science. The basic principles, covering aspects of emulsions from their preparation to their destruction, are presented in close relation to both thefundamental physics and the applications of these materials. The boo k is intended to help scientists and engineers in formulating new materials by giving them the basics of emulsion science

Title:Life As a Matter of Fat [electronic resource] : The Emerging Science of Lipidomics
Author(s): Ole G Mouritsen
Date:2005
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:LIFE - as a Matter of Fat Lipidomics is the science of the fats called lipids. Lipids are as important for life as proteins, sugars, and genes. The present book gives a multi-disciplinary perspective on the physics of life and theparticular role play ed by lipids and the lipid-bilayer component of cell membranes. The book is aimed at undergraduate students and young research workers within physics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, nutrition, as wellas pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. The emphasis is on the physical properties of lipid membranes seen as soft and molecularly structured interfaces. By combining and synthesizing insights obtained from a variety of recentstudies, an attempt is made to clarify what membrane structure is an d how it can be quantitatively described. Furthermore, it is shown how biological function mediated by membranes is controlled by lipid membrane structure andorganization on length scales ranging from the size of the individual molecule, across molecular assemblies of proteins and lipid domains in the range of nanometers, to the size of whole cells. Applications of lipids in nano-technologyand biomedicine are also described. The Emerging Science of Lipidomics We have just witnessed a scientific revolution at the end of the 20th century that took us through the genomics era with a focus on sequencing genes and mappinggene products. We are now in the middle of the proteomics era where the multitude of proteins that are encoded in the genes are identified an d their functions are unveiled. In front of us we have a new era recognizing the role oflipids. The science of lipidomics is emerging. Lipidomics involves a quantitative experimental and theoretical study of, e.g. lipid and membrane self-assembly, lipid-p rotein interactions, lipid-gene interactions, and the biophysicalproperties of lipid structure, function, and dynamics
