Title: | Introductory Notes on Valuation Rings and Function Fields in One Variable [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Renata Scognamillo Umberto Zannier |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Pisa : Scuola Normale Superiore : Imprint: Edizioni della Normale |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book deals with the (elementary and introductory) theory of valuation rings. As explained in the introduction, this represents a useful and important viewpoint in algebraic geometry, especially concerning the theory ofalgebraic curves and their f unction fields. The correspondences of this with other viewpoints (e.g. of geometrical or topological nature) are often indicated, also to provide motivations and intuition for many results. Links witharithmetic are also often indicated. There are three a ppendices, concerning Hilberts Nullstellensatz (for which several proofs are provided), Puiseux series and Dedekind domains. There are also several exercises, often accompaniedby hints, which sometimes develop further results not included in full for brev ity reasons |

Note: | The book is primarily intended as a textbook on modern algebra for undergraduate mathematics students. It is also useful for those who are interested in supplementary reading at a higher level. The text is designed in such a waythat it encourages ind ependent thinking and motivates students towards further study. The book covers all major topics in group, ring, vector space and module theory that are usually contained in a standard modern algebra text. Inaddition, it studies semigroup, group action, Hopf's group, topological groups and Lie groups with their actions, applications of ring theory to algebraic geometry, and defines Zariski topology, as well as applications of module theoryto structure theory of rings and homological algebra. Algebraic as pects of classical number theory and algebraic number theory are also discussed with an eye to developing modern cryptography. Topics on applications to algebraictopology, category theory, algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, cryptography and theo retical computer science interlink the subject with different areas. Each chapter discusses individual topics, starting from the basics, withthe help of illustrative examples. This comprehensive text with a broad variety of concepts, applications, example s, exercises and historical notes represents a valuable and unique resource |

Title: | Nevanlinna Theory in Several Complex Variables and Diophantine Approximation [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Junjiro Noguchi Jrg Winkelmann |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive account of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory and its relations with Diophantine approximation theory for graduate students and interested researchers. This book with ninechapters systematically de scribes Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic maps between algebraic varieties or complex spaces, building up from the classical theory of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with full proofs in Chap. 1 tothe current state of research. Chapter 2 present s the First Main Theorem for coherent ideal sheaves in a very general form. With the preparation of plurisubharmonic functions, how the theory to be generalized in a higher dimension isdescribed. In Chap. 3 the Second Main Theorem for differentiably non-d egenerate meromorphic maps by Griffiths and others is proved as a prototype of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory. Establishing such a Second Main Theorem forentire curves in general complex algebraic varieties is a wide-open problem. In Chap. 4, the Ca rtan-Nochka Second Main Theorem in the linear projective case and the Logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai Theorem in the case of general algebraicvarieties are proved. Then the theory of entire curves in semi-abelian varieties, including the Second Main Theorem of N oguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi, is dealt with in full details in Chap. 6. For that purpose Chap. 5 is devoted to thenotion of semi-abelian varieties. The result leads to a number of applications. With these results, the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problems are dis cussed in Chap. 7. In the last two chapters Diophantine approximation theory is dealt withfrom the viewpoint of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory, and the Lang-Vojta conjecture is confirmed in some cases. In Chap. 8 the theory over function fields is d iscussed. Finally, in Chap. 9, the theorems of Roth, Schmidt,Faltings, and Vojta over number fields are presented and formulated in view of Nevanlinna theory with results motivated by those in Chaps. 4, |

Title: | Topology [electronic resource] : An Introduction |
Author(s): |
Stefan Waldmann |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides a concise introduction to topology and is necessary for courses in differential geometry, functional analysis, algebraic topology, etc. Topology is a fundamental tool in most branches of pure mathematics and isalso omnipresent in m ore applied parts of mathematics. Therefore students will need fundamental topological notions already at an early stage in their bachelor programs. While there are already many excellent monographs on generaltopology, most of them are too large for a fir st bachelor course. Topology fills this gap and can be either used for self-study or as the basis of a topology course |

Title: | Differential Characters [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Christian Br Christian Becker |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Providing a systematic introduction to differential characters as introduced by Cheeger and Simons, this text describes important concepts such as fiber integration, higher dimensional holonomy, transgression, and the productstructure in a geometric manner. Differential characters form a model of what is nowadays called differential cohomology, which is the mathematical structure behind the higher gauge theories in physics. |

Author(s): |
Stefan Witzel |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | Providing an accessible approach to a special case of the Rank Theorem, the present text considers the exact finiteness properties of S-arithmetic subgroups of split reductive groups in positive characteristic when S contains onlytwo places. While th e proof of the general Rank Theorem uses an involved reduction theory due to Harder, by imposing the restrictions that the group is split and that S has only two places, one can instead make use of the theory oftwin buildings |

Note: | The main focus of this volume is on the problem of describing the automorphism groups of affine and projective varieties, a classical subject in algebraic geometry where, in both cases, the automorphism group is often infinitedimensional. The collect ion covers a wide range of topics and is intended for researchers in the fields of classical algebraic geometry and birational geometry (Cremona groups) as well as affine geometry with an emphasis on algebraicgroup actions and automorphism groups. It pres ents original research and surveys and provides a valuable overview of the current state of the art in these topics. Bringing together specialists from projective, birational algebraicgeometry and affine and complex algebraic geometry, including Mori theo ry and algebraic group actions, this book is the result of ensuing talks and discussions from the conference Groups of Automorphisms in Birational and AffineGeometry held in October 2012, at the CIRM, Levico Terme, Italy. The talks at the conference highl ighted the close connections between the above-mentioned areas and promoted the exchange of knowledge and methods from adjacentfields |

Author(s): |
Andrey Popov |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This monograph presents the basic concepts of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry and their possible applications to modern nonlinear applied problems in mathematics and physics, summarizing the findings of roughly the last hundredyears. The central sect ions cover the classical building blocks of hyperbolic Lobachevsky geometry, pseudo spherical surfaces theory, net geometrical investigative techniques of nonlinear differential equations in partial derivatives, and their applications to the analysis of th e physical models. As the sine-Gordon equation appears to have profound geometrical roots and numerous applications to modern nonlinear problems, it is treated as a universalobject of investigation, connecting many of the problems discussed. The aim of th is book is to form a general geometrical view on the different problems of modern mathematics, physics and natural science in general in the contextof non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry |

Title: | Towards the Mathematics of Quantum Field Theory [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Frdric Paugam |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The aim of this book is to introduce mathematicians (and, in particular, graduate students) to the mathematical methods of theoretical and experimental quantum field theory, with an emphasis on coordinate-free presentations of themathematical objects in play. This should in turn promote interaction between mathematicians and physicists by supplying a common and flexible language for the good of both communities, even if the mathematical one is the primarytarget. This reference work provides a coheren t and complete mathematical toolbox for classical and quantum field theory, based on categorical and homotopical methods, representing an original contribution to the literature. The firstpart of the book introduces the mathematical methods needed to work with the physicists' spaces of fields, including parameterized and functional differential geometry, functorial analysis, and the homotopical geometric theory ofnon-linear partial differential equations, with applications to general gauge theories. The s econd part presents a large family of examples of classical field theories, both from experimental and theoretical physics, while the thirdpart provides an introduction to quantum field theory, presents various renormalization methods, and discusses the q uantization of factorization algebras. The book is primarily intended for pure mathematicians (and in particulargraduate students) who would like to learn about the mathematics of quantum field theory |

Author(s): |
Siegfried Bosch |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | A first version of this work appeared in 2005 as a Preprint of the Collaborative Research Center Geometrical Structures in Mathematics at the University of Mnster. Its aim was to offer a concise and self-contained'lecture-style' introduction to the t heory of classical rigid geometry established by John Tate, together with the formal algebraic geometry approach launched by Michel Raynaud. These Lectures are now viewed commonly as an ideal meansof learning advanced rigid geometry, regardless of the rea der's level of background. Despite its parsimonious style, the presentation illustrates a number of key facts even more extensively than any other previous work. This LectureNotes Volume is a revised and slightly expanded version of the original preprint and has been published at the suggestion of several experts in the field |

Title: | Twisted Teichmller Curves [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Christian Wei |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | These notes introduce a new class of algebraic curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. These curves are called twisted Teichmller curves, because their construction is very reminiscent of Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles. These new objectsare analyzed in detail and their main properties are described. In particular, the volume of twisted Teichmller curves is calculated and their components are partially classified. The study of algebraic curves on Hilbert modularsurfaces has been widely covered in the literature due to their arithmetic importance. Among these, twisted diagonals (Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles) are some of the most important examples |

Note: | This volume presents recent advances in the interaction between Geometric Control Theory and sub-Riemannian geometry. On the one hand, Geometric Control Theory used the differential geometric and Lie algebraic language forstudying controllability, mot ion planning, stabilizability and optimality for control systems. The geometric approach turned out to be fruitful in applications to robotics, vision modeling, mathematical physics etc. On the other hand,Riemannian geometry and its generalizations, such a s sub-Riemannian, Finslerian geometry etc., have been actively adopting methods developed in the scope of geometric control. Application of these methods has led to importantresults regarding geometry of sub-Riemannian spaces, regularity of sub-Riemannian distances, properties of the group of diffeomorphisms of sub-Riemannian manifolds, local geometry and equivalence of distributions and sub-Riemannianstructures, regularity of the Hausdorff volume |

Title: | A Differential Approach to Geometry [electronic resource] : Geometric Trilogy III |
Author(s): |
Francis Borceux |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book presents the classical theory of curves in the plane and three-dimensional space, and the classical theory of surfaces in three-dimensional space. It pays particular attention to the historical development of the theoryand the preliminary a pproaches that support contemporary geometrical notions. It includes a chapter that lists a very wide scope of plane curves and their properties. The book approaches the threshold of algebraic topology, providingan integrated presentation fully accessible to undergraduate-level students. At the end of the 17th century, Newton and Leibniz developed differential calculus, thus making available the very wide range of differentiable functions, not just those constructed from polynomials. During the 18th centu ry, Euler applied these ideas to establish what is still today the classical theory of most general curves and surfaces, largely used in engineering. Enter thisfascinating world through amazing theorems and a wide supply of surprising examples. Reach the doors of algebraic topology by discovering just how an integer (= the Euler-Poincar characteristics) associated with a surface gives you alot of interesting information on the shape of the surface. And penetrate the intriguing world of Riemannian geometry , the geometry that underlies the theory of relativity. The book is of interest to all those who teach classicaldifferential geometry up to quite an advanced level. The chapter on Riemannian geometry is of great interest to those who have to intuitively introduce students to the highly technical nature of this branch of mathematics, inparticular when preparing students for courses on relativity |

Title: | An Algebraic Approach to Geometry [electronic resource] : Geometric Trilogy II |
Author(s): |
Francis Borceux |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This is a unified treatment of the various algebraic approaches to geometric spaces. The study of algebraic curves in the complex projective plane is the natural link between linear geometry at an undergraduate level andalgebraic geometry at a gradua te level, and it is also an important topic in geometric applications, such as cryptography. 380 years ago, the work of Fermat and Descartes led us to study geometric problems using coordinates andequations. Today, this is the most popular way of handling geometrical problems. Linear algebra provides an efficient tool for studying all the first degree (lines, planes, ) and second degree (ellipses, hyperboloids, ) geometricfigures, in the affine, the Euclidean, the Hermitian and the projective contexts. Bu t recent applications of mathematics, like cryptography, need these notions not only in real or complex cases, but also in more general settings, likein spaces constructed on finite fields. And of course, why not also turn our attention to geometric figur es of higher degrees? Besides all the linear aspects of geometry in their most general setting, this book also describes usefulalgebraic tools for studying curves of arbitrary degree and investigates results as advanced as the Bezout theorem, the Cramer p aradox, topological group of a cubic, rational curves etc. Hence the book is of interest for all thosewho have to teach or study linear geometry: affine, Euclidean, Hermitian, projective it is also of great interest to those who do not want to restrict t hemselves to the undergraduate level of geometric figures of degree one or two |

Note: | Recently the interest in Bohm realist interpretation of quantum mechanics has grown. The important advantage of this approach lies in the possibility to introduce non-locality ab initio, and not as an unexpected host. Inthis bookthe authors give a de tailed analysis of quantum potential, the non-locality term and its role in quantum cosmology and information. The different approaches to the quantum potential are analysed, starting from the originalattempt to introduce a realism of particles trajectori es (influenced by de Broglies pilot wave) to the recent dynamic interpretation provided by Goldstein, Durr, Tumulka and Zangh, and the geometrodynamic picture, with suggestionabout quantum gravity. Finally we focus on the algebraic reading of Hiley and Bi rkbeck school, that analyse the meaning of the non-local structure of the world, bringing important consequences for the space, time and informationconcepts |

Note: | Alfred Tarski (19011983) was a renowned Polish/American mathematician, a giant of the twentieth century, who helped establish the foundations of geometry, set theory, model theory, algebraic logic, and universal algebra.Throughout his career, he taug ht mathematics and logic at universities and sometimes in secondary schools. Many of his writings before 1939 were in Polish and remained inaccessible to most mathematicians and historians until now. Thisself-contained book focuses on Tarskis early contri butions to geometry and mathematics education, including the famous BanachTarski paradoxical decomposition of a sphere as well as high-school mathematical topics and pedagogy. These themes are significant since Tarskis later research on geometry and its fo undations stemmed in part from his early employment as a high-school mathematics teacher and teacher-trainer. The book contains careful translations andmuch newly uncovered social background of these works written during Tarskis years in Poland. Alfred Ta rski: Early Work in PolandGeometry and Teaching serves the mathematical, educational, philosophical, and historicalcommunities by publishing Tarskis early writings in a broadly accessible form, providing background from archival work in Poland, and updati ng Tarskis bibliography |

Note: | The purpose of the corona workshop was toconsider the corona problem in both one and several complex variables, both in the context of function theory and harmonic analysis as well as the context of operator theory andfunctional analysis. It was held in June 2012 at the Fields Institute in Toronto, and attended by about fifty mathematicians. This volume validates and commemorates the workshop, and records some of the ideas that were developedwithin. The corona problem dates back to 1941. It has exert ed a powerful influence over mathematical analysis for nearly 75 years. There is material to help bring people up to speed in the latest ideas of the subject, as well ashistorical material to provide background. Particularly noteworthy is a history of the corona problem, authored by the five organizers, that provides a unique glimpse at how the problem and its many different solutions have developed. There has never been a meeting of this kind, and there has never been a volume of this kind. Mathematicians both veterans and newcomerswill benefit from reading this book. This volume makes a unique contribution to the analysisliterature and will be a valuable part of the canon for many years to come |
