Title:Basic Concepts in Physics [electronic resource] : From the Cosmos to Quarks
Author(s): Masud Chaichian
Hugo Perez Rojas
Anca Tureanu
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Basic Concepts in Physics: From the Cosmos to Quarks is the outcome of the authors' long and varied teaching experience in different countries and for different audiences, and gives an accessible and eminently readableintroduction to all the main ide as of modern physics. The books fresh approach, using a novel combination of historical and conceptual viewpoints, makes it ideal complementary reading to more standard textbooks. The first fivechapters are devoted to classical physics, from planetary mot ion to special relativity, always keeping in mind its relevance to questions of contemporary interest. The next six chapters deal mainly with newer developments in physics, from quantum theory and general relativity to grand unified theories, and the book concludes by discussing the role of physics in living systems. A basic grounding in mathematics is required of the reader, but technicalities areavoided as far as possible thus complex calculations are omitted so long as the essential ideas remain clear. The book is addressed to undergraduate and graduate students in physics and will also be appreciated by many professionalphysicists. It will likewise beof interest to students, researchers and teachers of other natural sciences, as well as to engineers, h igh-school teachers and the curious general reader, who will come to understand what physics isabout and how it describes the different phenomena of Nature. Not only will readers of this book learn much about physics, they will also learn to love it.

Title:Relativity and Gravitation [electronic resource] : 100 Years after Einstein in Prague
Author(s): Ji Bik
Tom Ledvinka
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In early April 1911 Albert Einstein arrived in Prague to become full professor of theoretical physics at the German part of Charles University. It was there, for the first time, that he concentrated primarily on the problem ofgravitation. Before he l eft Prague in July 1912 he had submitted the paper Relativitt und Gravitation: Erwiderung auf eine Bemerkung von M. Abraham in which he remarkably anticipated what a future theory of gravity should looklike. At the occasion of the Einstein-in-Prague cente nary an international meeting was organized under a title inspired by Einstein's last paper from the Prague period: Relativity and Gravitation, 100 Years after Einstein inPrague. The main topics of the conference included: classical relativity, numerical relativity, relativistic astrophysics and cosmology, quantum gravity, experimental aspects of gravitation, and conceptual and historical issues. Theconference attracted over 200 scientists from 31 countries, among them a number of leading experts in the f ield of general relativity and its applications. This volume includes abstracts of the plenary talks and full texts ofcontributed talks and articles based on the posters presented at the conference. These describe primarily original results of the authors . Full texts of the plenary talks are included in the volume General Relativity, Cosmology andAstrophysics--Perspectives 100 Years after Einstein in Prague, eds. J. Bik and T. Ledvinka, published also by Springer Verlag

Title:Accelerated Cosmic Expansion [electronic resource] : Proceedings of the Fourth International Meeting on Gravitation and Cosmology
Author(s): Claudia Moreno Gonzlez
Jos Edgar Madriz Aguilar
Luz Marina Reyes Barrera
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume provides both an update and a review of the state of alternative theories of gravity, in connection with the issue of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Different theoretical proposals explain the accelerationin cosmic expansion, generating the dark energy issue and opening the possibilities of alternative theories of gravity (besides general relativity). Related issues, such as the problem of dark matter, are also surveyed in order to givethe readers profound insight on the subje ct from different points of view. Comprised of short talks and plenary lectures given by leading experts in the field, some of them with brilliant and historic contributions, this book allowsthe reader to find referenced surveys in topics like f(R) theori es, the dark matter and dark energy issues, Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) scenarios, f(T) theories, scalar-tensor theories derived from non-Riemannian geometries, emergent universes, the cosmological constant and other topics of current interest for p hysicists and graduate students. These proceedings are from the Fourth International Meeting on Gravitation and Cosmology, held in Guadalajara,Jalisco, Mxico, from 20 - 25 May, 2012, and were sponsored by ICTP- Trieste, Italy and COECyTJAL-Universidad de Guadalajara, Mxico. This event is a series of scientific meetings that was started in 2004 in Cuba, focusing on currentand selected topics in the fields of gravitation and cosmology

Title:Beyond Standard Model Phenomenology at the LHC [electronic resource]
Author(s): Priscila de Aquino
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This thesis provides an introduction to the physics of the Standard Model and beyond, and to the methods used to analyse Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. The 'hierarchy problem', astrophysical data and experiments on neutrinosindicate that new physi cs can be expected at the now accessible TeV scale. This work investigates extensions of the Standard Model with gravitons and gravitinos (in the context of supergravity). The production of these particles inassociation with jets is studied as one of the most promising avenues for researching new physics at the LHC. Advanced simulation techniques and tools, such as algorithms allowing the computation of Feynman graphs and helicityamplitudes are first developed and then employed

Title:Gravity, a Geometrical Course [electronic resource] : Volume 2: Black Holes, Cosmology and Introduction to Supergravity
Author(s): Pietro Giuseppe Fr
Date:2013
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Gravity, a Geometrical Course presents general relativity (GR) in a systematic and exhaustive way, covering three aspects that are homogenized into a single texture: i) the mathematical, geometrical foundations, exposed ina self consistent contempora ry formalism, ii) the main physical, astrophysical and cosmological applications, updated to the issues of contemporary research and observations, with glimpses on supergravity and superstring theory, iii)the historical development of scientific ideas und erlying both the birth of general relativity and its subsequent evolution. The book is divided in two volumes. Volume Two is covers black holes, cosmology and an introduction tosupergravity. The aim of this volume is two-fold. It completes the presentatio n of GR and it introduces the reader to theory of gravitation beyond GR, which is supergravity. Starting with a short history of the black hole concept, the book covers the Kruskal extension of the Schwarzschild metric, the causal structures of Lorentzian manifolds, Penrose diagrams and a detailed analysis of the Kerr-Newman metric. An extensive historical account of the development ofmodern cosmology is followed by a detailed presentation of its mathematical structure, including non-isotropic cosmologies and billiards, de Sitter space and inflationary scenarios, perturbation theory and anisotropies of the CosmicMicrowave Background. The last three chapters deal with the mathematical and conceptual foundations of supergravity in the frame of free different ial algebras. Branes are presented both as classical solutions of the bulk theory andas world-volume gauge theories with particular emphasis on the geometrical interpretation of kappa-supersymmetry. The rich bestiary of special geometries underlying super gravity lagrangians is presented, followed by a chapterproviding glances on the equally rich collection of special solutions of supergravity. Pietro Fr is Professor of Theoretical

Title:High Energy Astrophysics [electronic resource] : An Introduction
Author(s): Thierry J.-L Courvoisier
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, andhours (in quasars, X -ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox whenone thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the lastdecades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims atproviding astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physicalprocesses are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics plays a crucial role. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by theirobservational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here
