Note: | In early April 1911 Albert Einstein arrived in Prague to become full professor of theoretical physics at the German part of Charles University. It was there, for the first time, that he concentrated primarily on the problem ofgravitation. Before he l eft Prague in July 1912 he had submitted the paper Relativitt und Gravitation: Erwiderung auf eine Bemerkung von M. Abraham in which he remarkably anticipated what a future theory of gravity should looklike. At the occasion of the Einstein-in-Prague cente nary an international meeting was organized under a title inspired by Einstein's last paper from the Prague period: Relativity and Gravitation, 100 Years after Einstein inPrague. The main topics of the conference included: classical relativity, numerical relativity, relativistic astrophysics and cosmology, quantum gravity, experimental aspects of gravitation, and conceptual and historical issues. Theconference attracted over 200 scientists from 31 countries, among them a number of leading experts in the f ield of general relativity and its applications. This volume includes abstracts of the plenary talks and full texts ofcontributed talks and articles based on the posters presented at the conference. These describe primarily original results of the authors . Starting with a short history of the black hole concept,the book covers the Kruskal extension of the Schwarzschild metric, the causal structures of Lorentzian manifolds, Penrose diagrams and a detailed analysis of the Kerr-Newman metric. An extensive historical account of the development ofmodern cosmology is followed by a detailed presentation of its mathematical structure, including non-isotropic cosmologies and billiards, de Sitter space and inflationary scenarios, perturbation theory and anisotropies of the CosmicMicrowave Background. The last three chapters deal with the mathematical and conceptual foundations of supergravity in the frame of free different ial algebras. Branes are presented both as classical solutions of the bulk theory andas world-volume gauge theories with particular emphasis on the geometrical interpretation of kappa-supersymmetry. Note: | High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, andhours (in quasars, X -ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox whenone thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the lastdecades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims atproviding astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physicalprocesses are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics plays a crucial role. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by theirobservational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here |
