Title: | Symmetries in Fundamental Physics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Kurt Sundermeyer |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Over the course of the last century it has become clear that both elementary particle physics and relativity theories are based on the notion of symmetries. These symmetries become manifest in that the laws of nature areinvariant under spacetime tran sformations and/or gauge transformations. The consequences of these symmetries were analyzed as early as in 1918 by Emmy Noether on the level of action functionals. Her work did not receive due recognitionfor nearly half a century, but can today be unders tood as a recurring theme in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and special relativity, Yang-Mills type quantum field theories, and in general relativity. As a matter of fact, asshown in this monograph, many aspects of physics can be derived solely from symmetry considerations. This substantiates the statement of E.P. Wigner ... if we knew all the laws of nature, or the ultimate Law of nature, the invarianceproperties of these laws would not furnish us new information. Thanks to Wigner we now also under stand the implications of quantum physics and symmetry considerations: Poincare invariance dictates both the characteristic propertiesof particles (mass, spin, ...) and the wave equations of spin 0, 1/2, 1, ... objects. Further, the work of C.N. Yang and R. Mills reveals the consequences of internal symmetries as exemplified in the symmetry group of elementaryparticle physics. Given this pivotal role of symmetries it is thus not surprising that current research in fundamental physics is to a great degree motivated and inspired by considerations of symmetry. The treatment of symmetries inthis monograph ranges from classical physics to now well-established theories of fundamental interactions, to the latest research on unified theories and quantum gravity |

Title: | Advances in Natural Deduction [electronic resource] : A Celebration of Dag Prawitz's Work |
Author(s): |
Luiz Carlos Pereira Edward Hermann Haeusler Valeria de Paiva |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This collection of papers celebrating the contributions of Swedish logician Dag Prawitz to Proof Theory, has been assembled from those presented at the Natural Deduction conference organized in Rio de Janeiro to honour hisseminal research. Dag Prawit zs work forms the basis of intuitionistic type theory and his inversion principle constitutes the foundation of most modern accounts of proof-theoretic semantics in Logic, Linguistics andTheoretical Computer Science. The range of contributions includes ma terial on the extension of natural deduction with higher-order rules, as opposed to higher-order connectives, and a paper discussing the application of naturaldeduction rules to dealing with equality in predicate calculus. The volume continues with a key chapter summarizing work on the extension of the Curry-Howard isomorphism (itself a by-product of the work on natural deduction), viamethods of category theory that have been successfully applied to linear logic, as well as many other contributions from h ighly regarded authorities. With an illustrious group of contributors addressing a wealth of topics andapplications, this volume is a valuable addition to the libraries of academics in the multiple disciplines whose development has been given added scope by the methodologies supplied by natural deduction. The volume is representative ofthe rich and varied directions that Prawitz work has inspired in the area of natural deduction. |

Title: | A Measure Theoretical Approach to Quantum Stochastic Processes [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Wilhelm Waldenfels |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This monograph takes as starting point that abstract quantum stochastic processes can be understood as a quantum field theory in one space and in one time coordinate. As a result it is appropriate to represent operators as powerseries of creation and annihilation operators in normal-ordered form, which can be achieved using classical measure theory. Considering in detail four basic examples (e.g. a two-level atom coupled to a heat bath of oscillators), ineach case the Hamiltonian of the associated o ne-parameter strongly continuous group is determined and the spectral decomposition is explicitly calculated in the form of generalized eigen-vectors. Advanced topics include the theoryof the Hudson-Parthasarathy equation and the amplified oscillator pro blem. To that end, a chapter on white noise calculus has also been included |

Title: | Modeling and Simulation [electronic resource] : An Application-Oriented Introduction |
Author(s): |
Hans-Joachim Bungartz Stefan Zimmer Martin Buchholz Dirk Pflger |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides an introduction to mathematical and computer-oriented modeling and to simulation as a universal methodology. It therefore addresses various model classes and their derivations. And it demonstrates the diversityof approaches that ca n be taken: be it discrete or continuous, deterministic or stochastic. A common underlying theme throughout the book are the means in which one obtains practical simulation results from these different abstractmodels. Subsequent to a brief review of the mathematical tools that are required, the concept of the simulation pipeline, from model derivation to the simulation, is applied to 14 example scenarios from diverse fields such asGame theory - deciding - planning, Traffic on highways and data highways, Dynamical systems and Physics in the computer. Whether it is game theory or mathematical finance, traffic or control theory, populationdynamics or chaos, or molecular dynamics, continuum mechanics or computer graphics - the reader gains insight into the world of simulation in a descriptive yet systematic way |

Title: | Algebraic K-theory of Crystallographic Groups [electronic resource] : The Three-Dimensional Splitting Case |
Author(s): |
Daniel Scott Farley Ivonne Johanna Ortiz |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture in algebraic K-theory offers a description of the algebraic K-theory of a group using a generalized homology theory. In cases where the conjecture is known to be a theorem, it gives apowerful method for comput ing the lower algebraic K-theory of a group. This book contains a computation of the lower algebraic K-theory of the split three-dimensional crystallographic groups, a geometrically important class ofthree-dimensional crystallographic group, representing a third of the total number. The book leads the reader through all aspects of the calculation. The first chapters describe the split crystallographic groups and their classifyingspaces. Later chapters assemble the techniques that are needed to apply the i somorphism theorem. The result is a useful starting point for researchers who are interested in the computational side of the Farrell-Jones isomorphismconjecture, and a contribution to the growing literature in the field |

Title: | Representation Theory [electronic resource] : A Homological Algebra Point of View |
Author(s): |
Alexander Zimmermann |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Introducing the representation theory of groups and finite dimensional algebras, this book first studies basic non-commutative ring theory, covering the necessary background of elementary homological algebra andrepresentations of groups to block the ory. It further discusses vertices, defect groups, Green and Brauer correspondences and Clifford theory. Whenever possible the statements are presented in a general setting for more generalalgebras, such as symmetric finite dimensional algebras over a fie ld. Then, abelian and derived categories are introduced in detail and are used to explain stable module categories, as well as derived categories and their maininvariants and links between them. Group theoretical applications of these theories are given such as the structure of blocks of cyclic defect groups whenever appropriate. Overall, many methods from the representation theory ofalgebras are introduced. Representation Theory assumes only the most basic knowledge of linear algebra, groups, rings and fields, and guides the reader in the use of categorical equivalences in the representation theory of groups andalgebras. As the book is based on lectures, it will be accessible to any graduate student in algebra and can be used for self-study as well as for classroom use |

Author(s): |
John R Wallbank |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The last decade has witnessed the discovery of, and dramatic progress in understanding the physics of graphene and related two-dimensional materials. The development of methods for manufacturing and aligning high-qualitytwo-dimensional crystals has f acilitated the creation of a new generation of materials: the heterostructures of graphene with hexagonal crystals, in which the graphene electrons acquire new, qualitatively different properties. Thisthesis provides a comprehensive theoretical framework in which to understand these heterostructures, based on the tight binding model, perturbation theory, group theory and the concept of the moire superlattice (all of which areelucidated). It explains how graphene heterostructures provide new opportunities f or tailoring band structure, such as creating additional Dirac points or opening band gaps, and how they manifest themselvesin transport measurements, optical absorption spectra and the fractal Hofstadter spectra. Also considered arethe heterostructures of bilayer graphene and resonant tunneling in aligned graphene/insulator/graphene devices |

Title: | Symmetries in Fundamental Physics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Kurt Sundermeyer |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
This substantiates the statement of E.P.Wigner ... if we knew all the laws of nature, or the ultimate Law of nature, the invarianceproperties of these laws would not furnish us new information. Thanks to Wigner we now also unders tand the implications of quantum physics and symmetry considerations: Poincare invariance dictates both the characteristic propertiesof particles (mass, spin, ...) and the wave equations of spin 0, 1/2, 1, ... objects. Further, the work of C.N.Yang and R. Mills reveals the consequences of internal symmetries as exemplified in the symmetry group of elementary particlephysics. Given this pivotal role of symmetries it is thus not surprising that current research in fundamental physics is to a great degree mot ivated and inspired by considerations of symmetry. The treatment of symmetries in thismonograph ranges from classical physics to now well-established theories of fundamental interactions, to the latest research on unified theories and quantum gravity |

Stefan Witzel |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | Providing an accessible approach to a special case of the Rank Theorem, the present text considers the exact finiteness properties of S-arithmetic subgroups of split reductive groups in positive characteristic when S contains onlytwo places. While th e proof of the general Rank Theorem uses an involved reduction theory due to Harder, by imposing the restrictions that the group is split and that S has only two places, one can instead make use of the theory oftwin buildings |

Note: | The Biaowiea Workshops on Geometric Methods in Physics, which are hosted in the unique setting of the Biaowiea natural forest in Poland, are among the most important meetings in the field. Every year some 80 to 100participants from both the mathemati cs and physics world join to discuss new developments and to exchange ideas. The current volume was produced on the occasion of the 32nd meeting in 2013. It is now becoming a tradition that theWorkshop is followed by a School on Geometry and Physics, whic h consists of advanced lectures for graduate students and young researchers. Selected speakers at the 2013 Workshop were asked to contribute to this book, and their work wassupplemented by additional review articles. The selection shows that, despite its now long tradition, the workshop remains at the cutting edge of research. The 2013 Workshop also celebrated the 75th birthday of Daniel Sternheimer, andon this occasion the discussion mainly focused on his contributions to mathematical physics such as def ormation quantization, Poisson geometry, symplectic geometry and non-commutative differential geometry |

Title: | Renormalization Group Analysis of Equilibrium and Non-equilibrium Charged Systems [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Evgeny Barkhudarov |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This thesis has two parts, each based on an application of the renormalization-group (RG). The first part is an analysis of the d-dimensional Coulomb gas. The goal was to determine if the Wilson RG could provide input intoparticle-in-cell simulations in plasma physics, which are the main family of simulation methods used in this field. The role of the RG was to identify the effect of coarse-graining on the coupling constants as a function of thecut-offs. The RG calculation reproduced established resu lts, but in a more concise form, and showed the effect of the cut-offs on the Debye screening length. The main part of the thesis is the application of the dynamic RG toturbulence in magnetohydrodynamics. After transformation to Elsasser variables, which is a symmetrisation of the original equations, the solution is presented as a functional integral, which includes stirring forces, their conjugatesand functional Jacobian. The coarse-graining of the functional integral is represented as a diagrammatic exp ansion, followed by rescaling, and casting the results into differential equations for the analysis of RG trajectories.Detailed comparisons are made with the Navier-Stokes limit and with previous calculations for MHD |

Title: | Tensorial Methods and Renormalization in Group Field Theories [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Sylvain Carrozza |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The main focus of this thesis is the mathematical structure of Group Field Theories (GFTs) from the point of view of renormalization theory. Such quantum field theories are found in approaches to quantum gravity related, on theone hand, to Loop Quant um Gravity (LQG) and, on the other, to matrix- and tensor models. Background material on these topics, including conceptual and technical aspects, are introduced in the first chapters. The work then goes on toexplain how the standard tools of Quantum Fiel d Theory can be generalized to GFTs, and exploited to study the large cut-off behaviour and renormalization group transformations of the latter. Among the new results derived in thiscontext are a proof of renormalizability of a three-dimensional GFT with gauge group SU(2), which opens the way to applications of the formalism to quantum gravity |

Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | This volume presents recent advances in the interaction between Geometric Control Theory and sub-Riemannian geometry. On the one hand, Geometric Control Theory used the differential geometric and Lie algebraic language forstudying controllability, mot ion planning, stabilizability and optimality for control systems. The geometric approach turned out to be fruitful in applications to robotics, vision modeling, mathematical physics etc. On the other hand,Riemannian geometry and its generalizations, such a s sub-Riemannian, Finslerian geometry etc., have been actively adopting methods developed in the scope of geometric control. Application of these methods has led to importantresults regarding geometry of sub-Riemannian spaces, regularity of sub-Riemannian distances, properties of the group of diffeomorphisms of sub-Riemannian manifolds, local geometry and equivalence of distributions and sub-Riemannianstructures, regularity of the Hausdorff volume |

Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book is a collection of engaging and intriguing essays that describe an intellectual journey from the beginning to the end of universe. It is the product of an ongoing effort to know our place in the universe and share withreaders the underpinni ngs of the magnificent cosmos where we are given a chance to exist only very briefly. The essays incorporate a group of challenging ideas that modern physics and cosmology are struggling to understand, in a uniqueway that incorporates mythological, religi ous, and philosophical perspectives. The author relies on a simple and powerful philosophy that we are part of the universe and the universe is part of us. This wonderful collection ofessays provides a journey through the current frontiers of modern astr ophysics and cosmology. Its depiction of the most important unsolved mysteries about our place in the Universe is peppered with original insights and philosophicalperspectives, making it an intellectual treat. Avi Loeb, Professor, Harvard University Chai r, Astronomy Department Director, Institute for Theory and Computation In these essays, Santhosh Mathew combines an impressive knowledgeof physics with an eye to its connection to Eastern philosophy as well as its relevance to our life in modern times. I n his thoughtful investigation of natural phenomena and their relationship to universal philosophical truths, hetakes up where The Tao of Physics leaves off. You may well find his keen curiosity about the natural world and our place in it infectious. Car ole Bugge (C. E. Lawrence), author of Strings In this informative assemblage ofengaging essays Santhosh Mathew takes the reader on a deeply human quest for truth, a truly inspiring journey that boldly addresses the big questions of what the Universe is, how it came into being, and where it may be heading. Thisexciting adventure is as much a rich scientific history of elegant physics, mathematics, and cosmology as it is a philosophical and |

Title: | Non-minimal Higgs Inflation and Frame Dependence in Cosmology [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Christian Friedrich Steinwachs |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This thesis explores the idea that the Higgs boson of the Standard Model and the cosmological inflaton are just two manifestations of one and the same scalar field - the Higgs-inflaton. By this unification two energy scales thatare separated by many orders of magnitude are connected, thereby building a bridge between particle physics and cosmology. An essential ingredient for making this model consistent with observational data is a strong non-minimalcoupling to gravity. Predictions for the value of the Higgs mass as well as for cosmological parameters are derived, and can be tested by future experiments. The results become especially exciting in the light of the recently announceddiscovery of the Higgs boson. The model of non-minimal Higgs inflation is also used in a quantum cosmological context to predict initial conditions for inflation. These results can in turn be tested by the detection of primordialgravitational waves. Thepresentation includesall introductory material about cosmology and the S tandard Model that is essential forthe further understanding. It also provides an introduction to the mathematical methods used tocalculate the effective action by heat kernel methods |

Title: | Rigidity and Symmetry [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Robert Connelly Asia Ivi Weiss Walter Whiteley |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book contains recent contributions to the fields of rigidity and symmetry with two primary focuses: to present the mathematically rigorous treatment of rigidity of structures, and to explore the interaction of geometry, algebra, and combinatorics . Overall, the book shows how researchers from diverse backgrounds explore connections among the various discrete structures with symmetry as the unifying theme. Contributions present recent trends andadvances in discrete geometry, particularly in the the ory of polytopes. The rapid development of abstract polytope theory has resulted in a rich theory featuring an attractive interplay of methods and tools from discrete geometry, group theory, classical geometry, hyperbolic geometry and topology. The volume will also be a valuable source as an introduction to the ideas of both combinatorial and geometric rigidity theory and its applications, incorporating thesurprising impact of symmetry. It will appeal to students at both the advanced undergraduate and grad uate levels, as well as postdocs, structural engineers, and chemists |
