Title:A Course in Lens Design [electronic resource]
Author(s): Chris Velzel
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:A Course in Lens Design is an instruction in the design of image-forming optical systems. It teaches how a satisfactory design can be obtained in a straightforward way. Theory is limited to a minimum, and used to support thepractical design work. The book introduces geometrical optics, optical instruments and aberrations. It gives a description of the process of lens design and of the strategies used in this process. Half of its content is devoted to thedesign of sixteen types of lenses, described in detail from beginning to end. This book is different from most other books on lens design because it stresses the importance of the initial phases of the design process: (paraxial)lay-out and (thin-lens) pre-design. The argument for this change of accent is that in these phases much information can be obtained about the properties of the lens to be designed. This information can be used in later phases of thedesign. This makes A Course in Lens Design a useful self-study book, and a suitable basis for an introductory course in lens design. The mathematics mainly used is college algebra, in a few sections calculus is applied. The book couldbe used by students of engineering and technical physics, and by engineers and scientists

Title:Symmetries in Fundamental Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Kurt Sundermeyer
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Over the course of the last century it has become clear that both elementary particle physics and relativity theories are based on the notion of symmetries. These symmetries become manifest in that the laws of nature areinvariant under spacetime tran sformations and/or gauge transformations. The consequences of these symmetries were analyzed as early as in 1918 by Emmy Noether on the level of action functionals. Her work did not receive due recognitionfor nearly half a century, but can today be unders tood as a recurring theme in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and special relativity, Yang-Mills type quantum field theories, and in general relativity. As a matter of fact, asshown in this monograph, many aspects of physics can be derived solely from symmetry considerations. This substantiates the statement of E.P. Wigner ... if we knew all the laws of nature, or the ultimate Law of nature, the invarianceproperties of these laws would not furnish us new information. Thanks to Wigner we now also under stand the implications of quantum physics and symmetry considerations: Poincare invariance dictates both the characteristic propertiesof particles (mass, spin, ...) and the wave equations of spin 0, 1/2, 1, ... objects. Further, the work of C.N. Yang and R. Mills reveals the consequences of internal symmetries as exemplified in the symmetry group of elementaryparticle physics. Given this pivotal role of symmetries it is thus not surprising that current research in fundamental physics is to a great degree motivated and inspired by considerations of symmetry. The treatment of symmetries inthis monograph ranges from classical physics to now well-established theories of fundamental interactions, to the latest research on unified theories and quantum gravity

Title:Formulation of Uncertainty Relation Between Error and Disturbance in Quantum Measurement by Using Quantum Estimation Theory [electronic resource]
Author(s): Yu Watanabe
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In this thesis, quantum estimation theory is applied to investigate uncertainty relations between error and disturbance in quantum measurement. The author argues that the best solution for clarifying the attainable bound of theerror and disturbance i s to invoke the estimation process from the measurement outcomes such as signals from a photodetector in a quantum optical system. The error and disturbance in terms of the Fisher information content have beensuccessfully formulated and provide the upper bound of the accuracy of the estimation. Moreover, the attainable bound of the error and disturbance in quantum measurement has been derived. The obtained bound is determined for the firsttime by the quantum fluctuations and correlation functions of the o bservables, which characterize the non-classical fluctuation of the observables. The result provides the upper bound of our knowledge obtained by quantum measurements. The method developed in this thesis will be applied to a broad class of problems related to quantum measurement to build a next-generation clock standard and to successfully detect gravitational waves

Title:Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Non-Fourier Heat Conduction Based on Thermomass Theory [electronic resource]
Author(s): Hai-Dong Wang
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book mainly focuses on the theoretical and experimental study of non-Fourier heat conduction behavior. A novel thermomass theory is used as the theoretical basis, which provides a general heat conduction equation for theaccurate prediction of no n-Fourier heat conduction. In order to prove the validity of this thermomass theory, a large current was used to heat the metallic nanofilm at the minimum temperature of 3 K. The measured average temperature ofthe nanofilm was notably higher than the pred iction of Fouriers heat diffusion equation, while matching well with the general heat conduction equation. This is the first time that steady non-Fourier heat conduction has beenobserved. Moreover, this book concerns the role of electron-phonon interactio n in metallic nanofilms, which involves the breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law at low temperatures and interfacial thermal resistance at femtosecondtimescales. Readers will find useful information on non-Fourier heat conduction and the latest advances i n the study of charge and heat transport in metallic nanofilms

Title:Polarization Bremsstrahlung [electronic resource]
Author(s): Andrey V Korol
Andrey V Solov'yov
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Conversely, the analysis of the spectral and angular distribution of the photon emission constitutes a new tool for extractinginformation on the interaction of the colliding particles, and on their internal structure and dynamical properties. Last but not least, accurate quantitative descriptions of the photon emission processes determine the radiativeenergy losses of particles in various media, thereby providing essential information required for e.g. plasma diagnostics as well as astrophysical and medical applications (such as radiation therapy). This book primarilyaddresses graduate students and researchers with a background in atomic, molecular, optical or plasma physics, but will also be of b enefit to anyone wishing to enter the field.

Title:Applied Statistical Inference [electronic resource] : Likelihood and Bayes
Author(s): Leonhard Held
Daniel Sabans Bov
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book covers modern statistical inference based on likelihood with applications in medicine, epidemiology and biology. Two introductory chapters discuss the importance of statistical models in applied quantitative research andthe central role of the likelihood function. The rest of the book is divided into three parts. The first describes likelihood-based inference from a frequentist viewpoint. Properties of the maximum likelihood estimate, the scorefunction, the likelihood ratio and the Wald sta tistic are discussed in detail. In the second part, likelihood is combined with prior information to perform Bayesian inference. Topics include Bayesian updating, conjugate and referencepriors, Bayesian point and interval estimates, Bayesian asymptotics a nd empirical Bayes methods. Modern numerical techniques for Bayesian inference are described in a separate chapter. Finally two more advanced topics, model choice andprediction, are discussed both from a frequentist and a Bayesian perspective. A comprehe nsive appendix covers the necessary prerequisites in probability theory, matrix algebra, mathematical calculus, and numerical analysis

Note:This book features 13 papers presented at the Fifth International Symposium on Recurrence Plots, held August 2013 in Chicago, IL. It examines recent applications and developments in recurrence plots and recurrence quantifi cationanalysis (RQA) with s pecial emphasis on biological and cognitive systems and the analysis of coupled systems using cross-recurrence methods. Readers will discover new applications and insights into a range of systems provided byrecurrence plot analysis and new theoretical and mathematical developments in recurrence plots. Recurrence plot based analysis is a powerful tool that operates on real-world complex systems that are nonlinear, non-stationary, noisy, ofany statistical distribution, free of any particular model type, and not particularly long. Quantitative analyses promote the detection of system state changes, synchronized dynamical regimes, or classifi cation of system states. Th ebook will be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience of recurrence plot users and re searchers interested in time series analysis of complex systems in general
