Title:Applied Data-Centric Social Sciences [electronic resource] : Concepts, Data, Computation, and Theory
Author(s): Aki-Hiro Sato
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Applied data-centric social sciences aim to develop both methodology and practical applications of various fields of social sciences and businesses with rich data. Specifically, in the social sciences, a vast amount of data onhuman activities may be useful for understanding collective human nature. In this book, the author introduces several mathematical techniques for handling a huge volume of data and analysing collective human behaviour. The book isconstructed from data-oriented investigation, wit h mathematical methods and expressions used for dealing with data for several specific problems. The fundamental philosophy underlying the book is that both mathematical and physicalconcepts are determined by the purposes of data analysis. This philosophy is shown throughout exemplar studies of several fields in socio-economic systems. From a data-centric point of view, the author proposes a concept that maychange peoples minds and cause them to start thinking from the basis of data. Several goals underli e the chapters of the book. The first is to describe mathematical and statistical methods for data analysis, and toward that end theauthor delineates methods with actual data in each chapter. The second is to find a cyber-physical link between data and da ta-generating mechanisms, as data are always provided by some kind of data-generating process in the real world. The third goal is to provide an impetus for the concepts and methodology set forth in this book to be applied to socio-economic systems

Title:Chips 2020 [electronic resource] : A Guide to the Future of Nanoelectronics
Author(s): Bernd Hoefflinger
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The chips in present-day cell phones already contain billions of sub-100-nanometer transistors. By 2020, however, we will see systems-on-chips with trillions of 10-nanometer transistors. But this will be the end of theminiaturization, because yet sma ller transistors, containing just a few control atoms, are subject to statisticalfluctuations and thus no longer useful. We also need to worry about a potential energy crisis, because in less than fiveyears from now, with current chip technology, the inte rnet alone would consume the total global electrical power! This book presents a new, sustainable roadmap towards ultra-low-energy (femto-Joule), high-performance electronics. Thefocus is on the energy-efficiency of the various chip functions: sensing, pr ocessing, and communication, in a top-down spirit involving new architectures such as silicon brains, ultra-low-voltage circuits, energy harvesting, and 3Dsilicon technologies. Recognized world leaders from industry and from the research community share t heir views of this nanoelectronics future. They discuss, among other things, ubiquitous communication based on mobile companions, health and care supported by autonomous implants and by personal carebots, safe and efficient mobility assisted by co-pilots e quipped with intelligent micro-electromechanical systems, and internet-based education for a billionpeoplefrom kindergarden to retirement. This book should help and interest all those who will have to make decisions associated with future electronics: stu dents, graduates, educators, and researchers, as well as managers, investors, andpolicy makers. Note:Selected papers submitted by participants of the international Conference Stochastic Analysis and Applied Probability 2010 ( www.saap2010.org ) make up the basis of this volume. The SAAP 2010 was held in Tunisia, from 7-9October, 2010, and was organi zed by the Applied Mathematics & Mathematical Physics research unit of the preparatory institute to the military academies of Sousse (Tunisia), chaired by Mounir Zili. The papers cover theoretical, numerical and applied aspects of stochastic processes and stochastic differential equations. The study of such topic is motivated in part by the need to model, understand, forecast and control the behavior of many natural phenomenathat evolve in time in a random way. Such phenomena appear in the fields of financ e, telecommunications, economics, biology, geology, demography, physics, chemistry, signal processing and modern control theory, to mention just a few.As this book emphasizes the importance of numerical and theoretical studies of the stochastic differenti al equations and stochastic processes, it will be useful for a wide spectrum of researchers in applied probability, stochasticnumerical and theoretical analysis and statistics, as well as for graduate students. To make it more complete and accessible for graduate students, practitioners and researchers, the editors Mounir Zili and Daria Filatova have includeda survey dedicated to the basic concepts of numerical analysis of the stochastic differential equations, written by Henri Schurz

Note:Many research studies in the social and economic fields regard the collection and analysis of large amounts of data. These data sets vary in their nature and complexity, they may be one-off or repeated, they may be hierarchical, spatial or temporal. E xamples include textual data, transaction-based data, medical data and financial time-series. Standard statistical techniques are usually not well suited to manage this type of data and many authors have proposedextensions of classical techniques or compl etely new methods. The huge size of these data-sets and their complexity require new strategies of analysis sometimes subsumed under the terms data mining or predictive analytics. This volume contains a peer review selection of papers, whose preliminary ve rsion was presented at the international meeting of the Italian Statistical Society Statistical Methods for the analysis of large data-sets. Note:The new science of econophysics has arisen out of the information age. As large-scale economic data are being increasingly generated by industries and enterprises worldwide, researchers from fields such as physics, mathematics, and information science s are becoming involved. The vast number of transactions taking place, both in the financial markets and in the retail sector, is usually studied by economists and management and now by econophysicists. Usingcutting-edge tools of computational analysis wh ile searching for regularities and laws such as those found in the natural sciences, econophysicists have come up with intriguing results. The ultimate aim is to establishfundamental data collection and analysis techniques that embrace the expertise of a variety of academic disciplines. This book comprises selected papers from the international conference on novel analytical approaches to economic dataheld in Tokyo in March 2009. The papers include detailed reports on the market behavior during the financ ial crisis of 2008 and discussions on the mechanism of bubbles and crashes, with proposals for avoiding new crises. Filled withup-to-date research, this book will interest researchers and students, finance professionals, and scholars in diverse fields

It complements Functional Data Analysis, Second Edition and Applied Functional Data Analysis: Methods and Case Studies by providing computer code in both the R and Matlablanguages for a set of data analyses that show case functional data analysis techniques. The authors make it easy to get up and running in new applications by adapting the code for the examples, and by being able to access the detailsof key functions within these pages. This book is accompanied by add itional web-based support at http://www.functionaldata.org for applying existing functions and developing new ones in either language. The companion 'fda' package forR includes script files to reproduce nearly all the examples in the book including all bu t one of the 76 figures. Jim Ramsay is Professor Emeritus at McGill University and is an international authority on many aspects of multivariateanalysis. He was President of the Statistical Society of Canada in 2002-3 and holds the Societys Gold Medal for his work in functional data analysis. His statistical work draws on his collaboration with researchers in biomechanics, chemical engineering, climatology, ecology, economics, human biology, medicine and psychology. Giles Hooker is Assistant Professor of B iological Statistics and Computational Biology at Cornell University. His research interests includestatistical inference in nonlinear dynamics, machine learning and computational statistics. Spencer Graves is an engineer with a PhD in Statistics and over 15 years experience using S-Plus and R to analyze data in a broad range ofapplications. He has made substantive contributions to several CRAN packages including fda and DierckxSpline.

Note:State space models have gained tremendous popularity in recent years in as disparate fields as engineering, economics, genetics and ecology. After a detailed introduction to general state space models, this book focuses ondynamic linear models, empha sizing their Bayesian analysis. Whenever possible it is shown how to compute estimates and forecasts in closed form for more complex models, simulation techniques are used. A final chapter covers modernsequential Monte Carlo algorithms. The book illustrat es all the fundamental steps needed to use dynamic linear models in practice, using R. Many detailed examples based on real data sets are provided to show how to set up a specificmodel, estimate its parameters, and use it for forecasting. All the code use d in the book is available online. No prior knowledge of Bayesian statistics or time series analysis is required, although familiarity with basic statisticsand R is assumed. Giovanni Petris is Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas. He has publ ished many articles on time series analysis, Bayesian methods, and Monte Carlo techniques, and has served on National Science Foundationreview panels. He regularly teaches courses on time series analysis at various universities in the US and in Italy. An active participant on the R mailing lists, he has developed and maintains a couple of contributed packages. SoniaPetrone is Associate Professor of Statistics at Bocconi University,Milano. Title:Mathematics and Politics [electronic resource] : Strategy, Voting, Power and Proof
Author(s): Alan D Taylor
Allison M Pacelli
Date:2008
Edition:2
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Mathematics and Politics requires no prerequisites in either subject. The underlying philosophy involves minimizing algebraic computations while focusing on the conceptual aspects of mathematics in the context of real-worldquestions in political scie nce. This new addition has an added co-author, Allison Pacelli, and covers six major topics: social choice, yes-no voting systems, political power, game-theoretic models of international conflict, fairness, and escalation. In addition to having two new cha pters (treating apportionment and conflict resolution), the text has been extensively reorganized and the number of exercises increased to over 300. EXCERPTS FROM REVIEWS OF THE FIRSTEDITION Taylor has done a remarkable job of showing the power of deducti ve reasoning in the strategic choices actors make in conflict situations a penetrating analysis of both real-life and hypothetical situations. --Steven Brams, New York University Alan Taylors book is carefully crafted. He is ever aware of his audience, but relentlessly presses the beginning student to understand more and more. -- Samuel Merrill III, American MathematicalMonthly This book is a unique and valuable source Coverage is thorough and extensive ideas are explained clearly and at an appropriate mathematical level. -- Ed Packel, Lake Forest College Mathematics and Politics is anearly perfect solution, either for classes or for the serious professional who wants to retool. The writing is crisp, and the sense of excitement about learning mathema tics is seductive. -- Michael Munger, Chance I like thisbook. Its nice mathematics with serious applications. -- John Ewing, Indiana University Now we have, in Alan Taylors book, an introduction to these ideas that is delightfully lucid and requires almo st no mathematicalprerequisites. -- Phillip D. Straffin, College Mathematics Journal [The book] breaks new ground and could stand as the definitive undergraduate text

Note:The paradigms of dynamic games play an important role in the development of multi-agent models in engineering, economics, and management science. The applicability of their concepts stems from the ability to encompass situationswith uncertainty, inco mplete information, fluctuating coalition structure, and coupled constraints imposed on the strategies of all the players. This bookan outgrowth of the 10th International Symposium on Dynamic Gamespresentscurrent developments of the theory of dynamic game s and its applications to various domains, in particular energy-environment economics and management sciences. The volume uses dynamic game models of various sorts to approach and solveseveral problems pertaining to pursuit-evasion, marketing, finance, cl imate and environmental economics, resource exploitation, as well as auditing and tax evasions. In addition, it includes some chapters on cooperative games, whichare increasingly drawing dynamic approaches to their classical solutions. The book is themati cally organized into six parts: * zero-sum game theory * pursuit-evasion games * games of coalitions * new interpretations of theinterdependence between different members of a social group * original applications to energy-environment economics * manageme nt science applications This work will serve as a state-of-the art account of recent advances in dynamic gametheory and its applications for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering, economics, as well as envir onmental and management sciences

Note:This book comes as a result of the research work developed in the framework of two international projects: the European Science Foundation supported program NATEMIS (Nonlinear Acoustic Techniques for Micro-Scale DamageDiagnostics) and a Los Alamos-ba sed international network. The main topics of both the programs and the book cover the phenomenology, theory and applications of Nonclassical Nonlinearity (NCNL). NCNL techniques have been found inrecent years to be extremely powerful (up to 1000 times mo re than the corresponding linear techniques) in a wide range of applications, including Material Characterization, Ultrasonics, Geophysics and Maintenance and Restoration ofartifacts. These techniques are being adopted as the main inspection and research tool in another European program: AERONEWS (Health monitoring of aircraft by nonlinear elastic wave propagation). In the future, the proposedUniversality of NCNL is expected to extend the range of applications to numerous other fields and scientific disci plines outside acoustics and NDE
