Note:This thesis presents theoretical and numerical studies on phenomenological description of the quarkgluon plasma (QGP), a many-body system of elementary particles. The author formulates a causal theory of hydrodynamics forsystems with net charges fro m the law of increasing entropy and a momentum expansion method. The derived equation results can be applied not only to collider physics, but also to the early universe and ultra-cold atoms. The authoralso develops novel off-equilibrium hydrodynamic mod els for the longitudinal expansion of the QGP on the basis of these equations. Numerical estimations show that convection and entropy production during the hydrodynamic evolution arekey to explaining excessive charged particle production, recently observe d at the Large Hadron Collider. Furthermore, the analyses at finite baryon density indicate that the energy available for QGP production is larger than the amountconventionally assumed

Note:This thesis describes searches for new particles predicted by the supersymmetry (SUSY) theory, a theory extending beyond the current Standard Model of particle physics, using the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.The thesis focuses on searches for stop and sbottom squarks, the SUSY partners of the top and bottom quarks, which are expected to be lighter than the partners of the first and second generation quarks and therefore good candidates forthe first evidence of SUSY. It describes n ovel techniques for estimating and rejecting the Standard-Model backgrounds to searches for these particles. It also includes an independent analysis seeking to constrain the Standard ModelttZ background process, which also represents the first ATLAS sear ch for this rare process at the LHC. The stop squark analysis described, with substantial leading contributions from the author, is the first search for these particlesat the LHC to use the jets plus missing transverse energy plus 0-lepton signature and p rovides the world's best limits on the stop mass for light neutralino LSPs. All in all, the thesis describes three different world-leading analysesin both Standard Model and SUSY physics and therefore represents a major contribution to the field

The measured value of the cross-section within the fiducial range of the analysis is _e^HF = 0.946 0.020(stat.) 0.146(syst.) 0.032(lumi.) b. Theoretical predictions are in good agree ment with the measurement. The second part of this thesis is a search for compressed supersymmetric scenarios in events with missing transverse energy, jets, and oneisolated low-pT lepton in the final state using 4.7 fb-1 of ATLAS data collected at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy in 2011. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits are derivedfor a number of supersymmetric models

Note:This thesis deals with two main procedures performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The noise description in the hadronic calorimeter TileCal represents a very valuable technical job. The second partpresents a fruitful ph ysics analysis the cross section measurement of the process p + p Z0 + . The Monte Carlo simulations of the TileCal are described in the first part of the thesis, including a detailed treatmentof the electronic noise and multiple interactions (so-calle d pile-up). An accurate description of both is crucial for the reconstruction of e.g. jets or hadronic tau-jets. The second part reports a Standard Model measurementof the Z0 + process with the emphasis on the final state with an electron and a hadronically decaying tau-lepton. The Z0 + channel forms the dominant background in the search for Higgs bosons decaying into tau lepton pairs,and thus the good understanding achi eved here can facilitate more sensitive Higgs detection

Note:Thetheoretical foundations of the Standard Model of elementary particlesrelies on the existence of the Higgs boson,a particle which has been revealed for the first time by the experiments run at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) in 2012. As the Higgs bo son is an unstable particle, its search strategies were based on its decay products. In this thesis,Francesco Pandolfi conducted a search for the Higgs boson in the H ZZ l + l - qq Decay Channelwith 4.6 fb -1 of 7 TeV proton-proton collision data collec ted by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The presence of jets in the final state poses a series of challenges to the experimenter: both from a technical point ofview, as jets are complex objects and necessitate of ad-hoc reconstruction technique s, and from an analytical one, as backgrounds with jets are copious at hadron colliders, therefore analyses must obtain high degrees of backgroundrejection in order to achieve competitive sensitivity. This is accomplished by following two directives: the use of an angular likelihood discriminant,capable of discriminating events likely to originate from the decay of a scalarboson from non-resonant backgrounds, and by using jet parton flavor tagging, selecting jets compatible with quark hadronization and di scarding jets more likely to be initiated by gluons. The events passing the selection requirements in4.6 fb -1 of data collected by the CMS detectorare examined, in the search of a possible signal compatible with the decay of a heavy Higgs boson. The thes is describes the statistical tools and the results of this analysis. This workis a paradigm for studies of the Higgs boson with final states with jets. The non-expert physicists will enjoy a complete and eminently readable description of a proton-proton c ollider analysis. At the same time, the expert reader willlearn the details of the searches done with jets at CMS

Note:This thesis is based on the first data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its theme can be described as the classical Rutherford scattering experiment adapted to the LHC: measurement of scattering angles to search fornew physics and substr ucture. At the LHC, colliding quarks and gluons exit the proton collisions as collimated particle showers, or jets. The thesis presents studies of the scattering angles of these jets. It includes aphenomenological study at the LHC design energy of 14 TeV, where a model of so-called large extra dimensions is used as a benchmark process for the sensitivity to new physics. The experimental result is the first measurement, made in2010, by ATLAS, operating at the LHC start-up energy of 7 TeV. The result is com patible with the Standard Model and demonstrates how well the physics and the apparatus are understood. The first data is a tiny fraction of what will beaccumulated in the coming years, and this study has set the stage for performing these measurements wi th confidence as the LHC accumulates luminosity and increases its energy, thereby probing smaller length scales

Note:Abstract: Muzaffer Atac was a physicist who worked for Fermilab from 1968 until 2008. He was a member of the Fermilab CDF and CERN CMS experiments, and his most significant work was in instrumentation.
Note:Scope and content: The papers primarily consist of materials related to Atac's work at Fermilab and UCLA. The bulk of the collection consists of transparencies and copies of transparencies from Atac's presentations and lectures, drafts of Atac's writings, correspondence, materials related to Atac's participation in CDF and CMS, and materials related to Atac's work with Rockwell, International. The papers also contain notes and other materials related to Atac's time as a student, proposals and applications, materials related to Atac's patents and inventions, materials related to conferences and workshops Atac attended, instructional materials, and professional resources grouped by subject. Smaller amounts of biographical material, materials related to experiments and collaborations other than CDF and CMS, and photographs, slides, and negatives comprise the remainder of the collection.
