Title:Solving Non-standard Packing Problems by Global Optimization and Heuristics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Giorgio Fasano
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book results from a long-term research effort aimed at tackling complex non-standard packing issues which arise in space engineering. The main research objective is to optimize cargo loading and arrangement, in compliancewith a set of stringent rules. Complicated geometrical aspects are also taken into account, in addition to balancing conditions based on attitude control specifications. Chapter 1 introduces the class of non-standard packing problemsstudied. Chapter 2 gives a detailed explanatio n of a general model for the orthogonal packing of tetris-like items in a convex domain. A number of additional conditions are looked at in depth, including the prefixed orientation ofsubsets of items, the presence of unusable holes, separation planes and structural elements, relative distance bounds as well as static and dynamic balancing requirements. The relative feasibility sub-problem which is a special casethat does not have an optimization criterion is discussed in Chapter 3. This setting can be ex ploited by introducing an ad hoc objective function, aimed at facilitating the finding of integer-feasible solutions. The third chapter alsodiscusses the issue of tightening the general MIP model by introducing valid inequalities. A MIP-based heuristic ap proach is developed in Chapter 4, where the basic concept of abstract configuration is presented. Chapter 5 is devotedto experimental results relevant to a real-world application framework. Chapter 6 adopts both extensions of the general MIP model and non -linear formulations to tackle two further non-standard packing issues. The final Chapter 7presents conclusions and provides insights regarding prospective developments (including non-standard scheduling aspects). Practitioners and researchers interested in advanced optimization model development and solution in the contextof logistics, transportation systems, complex structures, manufacturing and electronics will find this book useful. The book can als

Planning and scheduling are forms of decision-making that play an important role in mostmanufacturing and services industries. The planning and scheduling functions in a company typically use analytical techniques and heuristic methods to allocate its limited resources to the activities that have to be done. Theapplication areas considered in this book are divided int o manufacturing applications and services applications. The book covers four areas in planning and scheduling: preliminary scheduling, planning and scheduling in manufacturing, planning and scheduling in services and systems development and implementation. It covers four areas in services: reservations and timetabling, tournament scheduling, planning and scheduling in transportation, planning and sheduling inhealthcare and workforce scheduling. At the end of each chapter, a case study or a system implementa tion is described in detail. Numerous examples and exercises throughout the book illustrate the material presented. The fundamentalsconcerning the methodologies used in the application chapters are covered in the appendices. This book is suitable for more advanced students in industrial engineering and operations research as well as graduate students in business.Michael Pinedo is the Julius Schlesinger Professor of Operations Management in the Stern School of Business at New York University. His research interests lie in the theoretical and applied aspects of planning and scheduling. He haswritten numerous papers on the theory of deterministic and stochastic scheduling and has also consulted extensively in industry. He has been actively involved in the de velopment of several large industrial planning and schedulingsystems. The book may be very useful as an application guideline for practicioners from the manufacturing and services sectors, while it has

Title:Level Crossing Methods in Stochastic Models [electronic resource]
Author(s): Percy H Brill
Date:2008
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Since its inception in 1974, the level crossing approach for analyzing a large class of stochastic models has become increasingly popular among researchers. This volume traces the evolution of level crossing theory for obtainingprobability distributi ons of state variables and demonstrates solution methods in a variety of stochastic models including: queues, inventories, dams, renewal models, counter models, pharmacokinetics, and the natural sciences. Resultsfor both steady-state and transient distrib utions are given, and numerous examples help the reader apply the method to solve problems faster, more easily, and more intuitively. The book includes introductory material for readers new tothe area, as well as advanced material for experienced users of the method, highlighting its usefulness for analyzing a broad class of models and illustrating its flexibility and adaptivity. The concepts, techniques, examples, applications and theoretical results in this book may suggest potentially new theory and new applications. The result is an essential resource for researchers, students, and professionals in operations research, management science, engineering, applied probability, statistics, actuarial science, mathematics, and the natural sciences

Title:Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming [electronic resource]
Author(s): Yves Pochet
Laurence A Wolsey
Date:2006
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and related supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programmi ng (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. This book addresses the solution of real life or industrialproduction planning problems (involving comple x production structures with multiple production stages) using a MIP modeling and reformulation approach. It is based on close to twenty years of research in which the authors have played asignificant role. One of the goals of this book is to allow non-ex pert readers, students in business, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science to solve such problems using standard modeling tools and MIP software. Toachieve this the book provides a unique collection of reformulation results, integrating the m into a comprehensive modeling and reformulation approach, as well as an easy to use problem-solving library. Moreover this approach isdemonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Graduate students and re searchers in operations research, management, science and applied mathematics wishing to gain a deeper understandingof the formulations and mathematics underlying this approach will find this book useful because of its detailed treatment of the polyhedral structure of the basic lot-sizing problems and simple mixed integer sets that arise in thedecomposition of more complicated problems. This book will allow the reader to improve formulations of non-standard MIP models and produce state-of-the-art models a nd algorithms

Michael K Ng
Date:2006
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Markov chains are a particularly powerful and widely used tool for analyzing a variety of stochastic (probabilistic) systems over time. This monograph will present a series of Markov models, starting from the basic models and thenbuilding up to highe r-order models. Included in the higher-order discussions are multivariate models, higher-order multivariate models, and higher-order hidden models. In each case, the focus is on the important kinds of applicationsthat can be made with the class of models being considered in the current chapter. Special attention is given to numerical algorithms that can efficiently solve the models. Therefore, Markov Chains: Models, Algorithms and Applicationsoutlines recent developments of Markov chain models for modelin g queueing sequences, Internet, re-manufacturing systems, reverse logistics, inventory systems, bio-informatics, DNA sequences, genetic networks, data mining, and manyother practical systems
