Title: | Measurement and Probability [electronic resource] : A Probabilistic Theory of Measurement with Applications |
Author(s): |
Giovanni Battista Rossi |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Measurement plays a fundamental role both in physical and behavioral sciences, as well as in engineering and technology: it is the link between abstract models and empirical reality and is a privileged method of gatheringinformation from the real wor ld. Is it possible to develop a single theory of measurement for the various domains of science and technology in which measurement is involved? This book takes the challenge by addressing the followingmain issues: What is the meaning of measurement? How do we measure? What can be measured? A theoretical framework that could truly be shared by scientists in different fields, ranging from physics and engineering to psychology isdeveloped. The future in fact will require greater collaboration between scienc e and technology and between different sciences. Measurement, which played a key role in the birth of modern science, can act as an essentialinterdisciplinary tool and language for this new scenario. A sound theoretical basis for addressing key problems i n measurement is provided. These include perceptual measurement, the evaluation of uncertainty, the evaluation ofinter-comparisons, the analysis of risks in decision-making and the characterization of dynamical measurement. Currently, increasing attention is paid to these issues due to their scientific, technical, economic and social impact. Thebook proposes a unified probabilistic approach to them which may allow more rational and effective solutions to be reached. Great care was taken to make the text a s accessible as possible in several ways. Firstly, by giving preferenceto as interdisciplinary a terminology as possible secondly, by carefully defining and discussing all key terms. This ensures that a wide readership, including people from different mat hematical backgrounds and different understandingsof measurement can all benefit from this work. Concerning mathematics, all the main results are preceded by intuitive discussions and illustrated by si |

Title: | Introduction to Supergravity [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Yoshiaki Tanii |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book is a pedagogical introduction to supergravity, a gravitational field theory that includes supersymmetry (symmetry between bosons and fermions) and is a generalization of Einstein's general relativity. Supergravityprovides a low-energy effec tive theory of superstring theory, which has attracted much attention as a candidate for the unified theory of fundamental particles, and it is a useful tool for studying non-perturbative properties ofsuperstring theory such as D-branes and string duality . This work considers classical supergravities in four and higher spacetime dimensions with their applications to superstring theory in mind. More concretely, it discusses classicalLagrangians (or field equations) and symmetry properties of supergravities . Besides local symmetries, supergravities often have global non-compact symmetries, which play a crucial role in their applications to superstring theory. Oneof the main features of this book is its detailed discussion of these non-compact symmetries. Th e aim of the book is twofold. One is to explain the basic ideas of supergravity to those who are not familiar with it. Toward that end, thediscussions are made both pedagogical and concrete by stating equations explicitly. The other is to collect relevant formulae in one place so as to be useful for applications to string theory. The subjects discussed in this bookinclude the vielbein formulation of gravity, supergravities in four dimensions, possible types of spinors in various dimensions, superalgebras and supermultiplets, non-linear sigma models for non-compact Lie groups, electric-magneticduality symmetries, supergravities in higher dimensions, dimensional reductions, and gauged and massive supergravities |

Title: | Nevanlinna Theory in Several Complex Variables and Diophantine Approximation [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Junjiro Noguchi Jrg Winkelmann |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive account of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory and its relations with Diophantine approximation theory for graduate students and interested researchers. This book with ninechapters systematically de scribes Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic maps between algebraic varieties or complex spaces, building up from the classical theory of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with full proofs in Chap. 1 tothe current state of research. Chapter 2 present s the First Main Theorem for coherent ideal sheaves in a very general form. With the preparation of plurisubharmonic functions, how the theory to be generalized in a higher dimension isdescribed. In Chap. 3 the Second Main Theorem for differentiably non-d egenerate meromorphic maps by Griffiths and others is proved as a prototype of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory. Establishing such a Second Main Theorem forentire curves in general complex algebraic varieties is a wide-open problem. In Chap. 4, the Ca rtan-Nochka Second Main Theorem in the linear projective case and the Logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai Theorem in the case of general algebraicvarieties are proved. Then the theory of entire curves in semi-abelian varieties, including the Second Main Theorem of N oguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi, is dealt with in full details in Chap. 6. For that purpose Chap. 5 is devoted to thenotion of semi-abelian varieties. The result leads to a number of applications. With these results, the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problems are dis cussed in Chap. 7. In the last two chapters Diophantine approximation theory is dealt withfrom the viewpoint of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory, and the Lang-Vojta conjecture is confirmed in some cases. In Chap. 8 the theory over function fields is d iscussed. Finally, in Chap. 9, the theorems of Roth, Schmidt,Faltings, and Vojta over number fields are presented and formulated in view of Nevanlinna theory with results motivated by those in Chaps. 4, |

Title: | Kripkes Worlds [electronic resource] : An Introduction to Modal Logics via Tableaux |
Author(s): |
Olivier Gasquet Andreas Herzig Bilal Said Franois Schwarzentruber |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Basel : Springer Basel : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Possible worlds models were introduced by Saul Kripke in the early 1960s. Basically, a possible worlds model is nothing but a graph with labelled nodes and labelled edges. Such graphs provide semantics for various modal logics(alethic, temporal, epis temic and doxastic, dynamic, deontic, description logics) and also turned out useful for other nonclassical logics (intuitionistic, conditional, several paraconsistent and relevant logics). All these logics havebeen studied intensively in philosophical an d mathematical logic and in computer science, and have been applied increasingly in domains such as program semantics, artificial intelligence, and more recently in the semantic web.Additionally, all these logics were also studied proof theoretically. The proof systems for modal logics come in various styles: Hilbert style, natural deduction, sequents, and resolution. However, it is fair to say that the mostuniform and most successful such systems are tableaux systems. Given a logic and a formula, they al low one to check whether there is a model in that logic. This basically amounts to trying to build a model for the formula by building atree. This book follows a more general approach by trying to build a graph, the advantage being that a graph is closer to a Kripke model than a tree. It provides a step-by-step introduction to possible worlds semantics (and by that tomodal and other nonclassical logics) via the tableaux method. It is accompanied by a piece of software called LoTREC (www.irit.fr/Lotrec). L oTREC allows to check whether a given formula is true at a given world of a given model and tocheck whether a given formula is satisfiable in a given logic. The latter can be done immediately if the tableau system for that logic has already been implement ed in LoTREC. If this is not yet the case LoTREC offers the possibility toimplement a tableau system in a relatively easy way via a simple, graph-based, interactive language. >dy> |

Title: | Semigroups, Boundary Value Problems and Markov Processes [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Kazuaki Taira |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | A careful and accessible exposition of functional analytic methods in stochastic analysis is provided in this book. It focuses on the interrelationship between three subjects in analysis: Markov processes, semi groups and ellipticboundary value probl ems. The author studies a general class of elliptic boundary value problems for second-order, Waldenfels integro-differential operators in partial differential equations and proves that this class of ellipticboundary value problems provides a general clas s of Feller semigroups in functional analysis. As an application, the author constructs a general class of Markov processes in probability in which a Markovian particle moves both by jumpsand continuously in the state space until it 'dies' at the time whe n it reaches the set where the particle is definitely absorbed. Augmenting the 1st edition published in 2004, this edition includes four new chapters and eightre-worked and expanded chapters. It is amply illustrated and all chapters are rounded off with N otes and Comments where bibliographical references are primarily discussed. Thanks to the kind feedback from many readers, some errors inthe first edition have been corrected. In order to keep the book up-to-date, new references have been added to the bib liography. Researchers and graduate students interested in PDEs, functional analysis and probability will find thisvolume useful |

Title: | A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Hans Petter Langtangen |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 4th ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, st atistics, physics, biology and finance. The book teaches Matlab-style and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background and it is advantageousto study classical and numerical one-variable c alculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of scienceand engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science. From the reviews: Langtangen does an excellent job of introducing programming as a set of skills in problem solving. He guides the reader into thinking properly about producing program logic and data structures for modeling real-world problems using objectsand functions and embracing the object-oriented paradigm. Summing Up: Highly recommended. F. H. Wild III, Choice, Vol. 47 (8), April 2010 Those of us who have learned scientific programming in Python on the streets could be alittle jealous of students who have the opportunity to take a course out of Langtangens Primer. John D. Cook, The Mathematical Association of Am erica, September 2011 This book goes through Python in particular, and programmingin general, via tasks that scientists will likely perform. It contains valuable informationfor students new to scientific computing and would be the perfect bridge between a n introduction to programming and an advanced course onnumerical methods or computational science. Note: | This book provides a rigorous but elementary introduction to the theory of Markov Processes on a countable state space. It should be accessible to students with a solid undergraduate background in mathematics, including studentsfrom engineering, econ omics, physics, and biology. Topics covered are: Doeblin's theory, general ergodic properties, and continuous time processes.Applications are dispersed throughout the book. In addition, a whole chapter isdevoted to reversible processes and the use of thei r associated Dirichlet forms to estimate the rate of convergence to equilibrium. These results are then applied to the analysis of the Metropolis (a.k.a simulated annealing) algorithm. The corrected and enlarged 2nd edition contains a new chapter in which the author develops computational methods for Markov chains on a finite state space. Most intriguing isthe section with a new technique for computing stationarymeasures, which is applied to derivations of Wilson's algorithm and Kirchoff's formula for span ning trees in a connected graph |

Title: | Fluctuations of Lvy Processes with Applications [electronic resource] : Introductory Lectures |
Author(s): |
Andreas E Kyprianou |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Lvy processes are the natural continuous-time analogue of random walks and form a rich class of stochastic processes around which a robust mathematical theory exists. Their application appears in the theory of many areas ofclassical and modern stocha stic processes including storage models, renewal processes, insurance risk models, optimal stopping problems, mathematical finance, continuous-state branching processes and positive self-similar Markovprocesses. This textbook is based on a series of gradu ate courses concerning the theory and application of Lvy processes from the perspective of their path fluctuations. Central to the presentation is the decomposition of paths interms of excursions from the running maximum as well as an understanding of sho rt- and long-term behaviour. The book aims to be mathematically rigorous while still providing an intuitive feel for underlying principles. The results andapplications often focus on the case of Lvy processes with jumps in only one direction, for which re cent theoretical advances have yielded a higher degree of mathematical tractability. The second edition additionally addresses recentdevelopments in the potential analysis of subordinators, Wiener-Hopf theory, the theory of scale functions and their appli cation to ruin theory, as well as including an extensive overview of the classical and modern theory of positiveself-similar Markov processes. Each chapter has a comprehensive set of exercises. Andreas Kyprianou has a degree in Mathematics from the Univer sity of Oxford and a Ph.D. in Probability Theory from The University of Sheffield. He iscurrently a Professor of Probability at the University of Bath, having held academic positions in Mathematics and Statistics Departments at the London School of Econom ics, Edinburgh University, Utrecht University and Heriot-WattUniversity, besides working for nearly two years as a research mathematician in the oil industry. Note: | Basic Concepts in Physics: From the Cosmos to Quarks is the outcome of the authors' long and varied teaching experience in different countries and for different audiences, and gives an accessible and eminently readableintroduction to all the main ide as of modern physics. The books fresh approach, using a novel combination of historical and conceptual viewpoints, makes it ideal complementary reading to more standard textbooks. The first fivechapters are devoted to classical physics, from planetary mot ion to special relativity, always keeping in mind its relevance to questions of contemporary interest. The next six chapters deal mainly with newer developments in physics, from quantum theory and general relativity to grand unified theories, and the book concludes by discussing the role of physics in living systems. A basic grounding in mathematics is required of the reader, but technicalities areavoided as far as possible thus complex calculations are omitted so long as the essential ideas remain clear. The book is addressed to undergraduate and graduate students in physics and will also be appreciated by many professionalphysicists. It will likewise beof interest to students, researchers and teachers of other natural sciences, as well as to engineers, h igh-school teachers and the curious general reader, who will come to understand what physics isabout and how it describes the different phenomena of Nature. Not only will readers of this book learn much about physics, they will also learn to love it. |
