Methods ofcharacterization and ana lysis of the multiferroic properties with in situ electric fields are induced to detect the direct magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. A switchable and non-volatile electric field control of magnetization inCoFeB/PMN-PT(001) structures is observed at room temp erature, and the mechanism of direct coupling between the ferroelectric domain and ferromagnetic film due to the combined action of 109 ferroelastic domain switching in PMN-PT andthe absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in CoFeB is demonstrated. Moreo ver, the electric-field control of giant magnetoresistance is achieved in a CoFeB-based spin valve deposited on top of (011) oriented PMN-PT, which offers anavenue for implementing electric-writing and magnetic-reading random access memory at room tempera ture. Readers will learn the basic properties of multiferroic materials, many useful techniques related to characterizing multiferroicsand the interesting ME effect in CoFeB/PMN-PT structures, which is significant for applications

New clarifications areprovided for spin-dependent H all effects induced by the Berry phase, skew scattering, and scalar spin chirality. The author reveals the scattering-free nature of the Berry-phase-induced anomalous Hall current by conducting the firstcomparative study of electrical and thermal Hall eff ects. The impurity-element dependence of the anomalous Hall effect caused by skew scattering is systematically investigated in the low-resistivity region for Fe. Two new examplesshowing a topological Hall effect are found in helimagnets, in which nonzero scalar spin chirality arises from the modulation of spin structure through DzyaloshinskyMoriya (DM) interaction. Such a DM-interaction-mediated topologicalHall effect is a new type of topological Hall effect. Also the temperature dependence of topological Hall terms in the thermal Hall effect and NernstEttingshausen effect is found to be totally different from that in the electricalHall effect. These results will be useful for applications of spin current to devices with low power consumption

Note:In this book the author presents two important findings revealed by high-precision magnetic penetration depth measurements in iron-based superconductors which exhibit high-transition temperature superconductivity up to 55 K: oneis the fact that the s uperconducting gap structure in iron-based superconductors depends on a detailed electronic structure of individual materials, and the other is the first strong evidence for the presence of a quantum criticalpoint (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome of iron-based superconductors. The magnetic penetration depth is a powerful probe to elucidate the superconducting gap structure which is intimately related to the pairing mechanism ofsuperconductivity. The author discusses the possible gap structure of ind ividual iron-based superconductors by comparing the gap structure obtained from the penetration depth measurements with theoretical predictions, indicating thatthe non-universal superconducting gap structure in iron-pnictides can be interpreted in the fra mework of A1g symmetry. This result imposes a strong constraint on the pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors. The author alsoshows clear evidence for the quantum criticality inside the superconducting dome from the absolute zero-temperature pene tration depth measurements as a function of chemical composition. A sharp peak of the penetration depth at acertain composition demonstrates pronounced quantum fluctuations associated with the QCP, which separates two distinct superconducting phases. This gives the first convincing signature of a second-order quantum phase transition deepinside the superconducting dome, which may address a key question on the general phase diagram of unconventional superconductivity in the vicinity of a QCP

Based on the fact that the multi-nucleon induced surfacedeformation of finite nucleus can be simulated by effective boson degrees of freedom, intrinsic properties of the nucleon system, obtained from self-consistent mean-field method with a microscopic energy density functional, are mappedonto the boson analog. Thereby, the excitation spe ctra and the transition rates for the relevant collective states having good symmetry quantum numbers are calculated by the subsequent diagonalization of the mapped boson Hamiltonian.Because the density functional approach gives an accurate global descrip tion of nuclear bulk properties, the interacting boson model is derived for various situations of nuclear shape phenomena, including those of the exotic nucleiinvestigated at rare-isotope beam facilities around the world. This work provides, for the first time, crucial pieces of information about how the interacting boson model is justified and derived from nucleon degrees of freedom in acomprehensive manner

Note:This book explains the theory of special and general relativity in detail, without digressions such as information on Einstein's life or the historical background. However, complicated calculations are replaced with figures andthought experiments, th e text being formulated in such a way that the reader will be able to understand the gist intuitively. The first part of the book focuses on the essentials of special relativity. Explanations are provided of thefamous equivalence between mass and energy a nd of why Einstein was able to use the theory of electrodynamics as a template for his electrodynamics of moving bodies, simply because besides the speed of light, the electric chargeitself is also absolute, leading to the relativity of other physical qua ntities. General relativity is then introduced, mainly with the help of thought experiments. Reference is made to the previously introduced special relativity andthe equivalence principle and, using many figures, it is explained how space-time is bending under gravity. The climax of the book comes with the Einstein equations of gravity that describe the way in which matter bends space-time. Thereader is shown how to obtain the famous Schwarzschild solution. There follows a numerically correct and yet intu itive explanation of the classic effects such as light bending or the movement of the perihelion. The book concludes byexplaining the Friedmann model of the big bang and why the theory of gravity does not fit with quantum theory

Note:One of the best ways to lift the lid on what is happening inside a given material is to study it using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Of particular interest are NMR 1/T1 relaxation rates, which measure how fast energystored in magnetic nuclei is t ransferred to surrounding electrons. This thesis develops a detailed, quantitative theory of NMR 1/T1 relaxation rates, and shows for the first time how they could be used to measure the speed at whichenergy travels in a wide range of magnetic materials. This theory is used to make predictions forQuantum Spin Nematics, an exotic form of quantum order analogous to a liquid crystal. In order to do so, it is first necessary tounravel how spin nematics transport energy. This thesis proposes a new way to do this, based on the description of quarks in high-energy physics.
