Note:In this book the author presents two important findings revealed by high-precision magnetic penetration depth measurements in iron-based superconductors which exhibit high-transition temperature superconductivity up to 55 K: oneis the fact that the s uperconducting gap structure in iron-based superconductors depends on a detailed electronic structure of individual materials, and the other is the first strong evidence for the presence of a quantum criticalpoint (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome of iron-based superconductors. The magnetic penetration depth is a powerful probe to elucidate the superconducting gap structure which is intimately related to the pairing mechanism ofsuperconductivity. The author discusses the possible gap structure of ind ividual iron-based superconductors by comparing the gap structure obtained from the penetration depth measurements with theoretical predictions, indicating thatthe non-universal superconducting gap structure in iron-pnictides can be interpreted in the fra mework of A1g symmetry. This result imposes a strong constraint on the pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors. The author alsoshows clear evidence for the quantum criticality inside the superconducting dome from the absolute zero-temperature pene tration depth measurements as a function of chemical composition. A sharp peak of the penetration depth at acertain composition demonstrates pronounced quantum fluctuations associated with the QCP, which separates two distinct superconducting phases. This gives the first convincing signature of a second-order quantum phase transition deepinside the superconducting dome, which may address a key question on the general phase diagram of unconventional superconductivity in the vicinity of a QCP

This thesis develops a detailed, quantitative theory of NMR 1/T1 relaxation rates, and shows for the first time how they could be used to measure the speed at whichenergy travels in a wide range of magnetic materials. This theory is used to make predictions forQuantum Spin Nematics, an exotic form of quantum order analogous to a liquid crystal. In order to do so, it is first necessary tounravel how spin nematics transport energy. This thesis proposes a new way to do this, based on the description of quarks in high-energy physics. Note:Electric control of magnetic properties, or inversely, magnetic control of dielectric properties in solids, is called a magnetoelectric effect and has long been investigated from the point of view of both fundamental physics andpotential application. Magnetic and dielectric properties usually show minimal coupling, but it recently has been discovered that magnetically induced ferroelectricity in some spiral magnets enables remarkably large and versatilemagnetoelectric responses. To stabilize such hel imagnetism, magnetic frustration (competition between different magnetic interactions) is considered the key. In the present work, two of the most typical frustrated spinsystemstriangular lattice antiferromagnets and edge-shared chain magnetshave systemat ically been investigated. Despite the crystallographic simplicity of target systems, rich magnetoelectric responses are ubiquitously observed.The current results published here offer a useful guideline in the search for new materials with unique magnetoel ectric functions, and also provide an important basis for a deeper understanding of magnetoelectric phenomena in morecomplex systems

Note:The topic of lattice quantum spin systems is a fascinating and by now well-established branch of theoretical physics. However, many important questions remain to be answered. Their intrinsically quantum mechanical nature and thelarge (usually effecti vely infinite) number of spins in macroscopic materials often leads to unexpected or counter-intuitive results and insights. Spin systems are not only the basic models for a whole host of magnetic materials butthey are also important as prototypical model s of quantum systems. Low dimensional systems (as treated in this primer), in 2D and especially 1D, have been particularly fruitful because their simplicity has enabled exact solutions to bedetermined in many cases. These exact solutions contain many high ly nontrivial features. This book was inspired by a set of lectures on quantum spin systems and it is set at a level of practical detail that is missing in othertextbooks in the area. It will guide the reader through the foundations of the field. In parti cular, the solutions of the Heisenberg and XY models at zero temperature using the Bethe Ansatz and the Jordan-Wigner transformation arecovered in some detail. The use of approximate methods, both theoretical and numerical, to tackle more advanced topics is considered. The final chapter describes some very recent applications of approximate methods in order to showsome of the directions in which the study of these systems is currently developing
