Note:The structure of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems and individual turnpike results for optimal control problems without convexity (concavity) assumptions are examined in this book. Inparticular, the book focus es on the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval, for all sufficiently large intervals these results apply to the so-called turnpike property of the optimalcontrol problems. By encompassing the so-called tu rnpike property the approximate solutions of the problemsare determined primarily by the objective function and are fundamentally independent of the choice of interval and endpointconditions, except in regions close to the endpoints. This bookalso explore s the turnpike phenomenon for two large classes of autonomous optimal control problems. It is illustrated that the turnpike phenomenon is stable for anoptimal control problem if the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problem possesses an asymp totic turnpike property. If an optimal control problem belonging to the first class possesses the turnpike property, then theturnpike is a singleton (unit set). The stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function and of a constraint map is established. Note:This book results from a long-term research effort aimed at tackling complex non-standard packing issues which arise in space engineering. The main research objective is to optimize cargo loading and arrangement, in compliancewith a set of stringent rules. Complicated geometrical aspects are also taken into account, in addition to balancing conditions based on attitude control specifications. Chapter 1 introduces the class of non-standard packing problemsstudied. Chapter 2 gives a detailed explanatio n of a general model for the orthogonal packing of tetris-like items in a convex domain. A number of additional conditions are looked at in depth, including the prefixed orientation ofsubsets of items, the presence of unusable holes, separation planes and structural elements, relative distance bounds as well as static and dynamic balancing requirements. The relative feasibility sub-problem which is a special casethat does not have an optimization criterion is discussed in Chapter 3. This setting can be ex ploited by introducing an ad hoc objective function, aimed at facilitating the finding of integer-feasible solutions. The third chapter alsodiscusses the issue of tightening the general MIP model by introducing valid inequalities. A MIP-based heuristic ap proach is developed in Chapter 4, where the basic concept of abstract configuration is presented. Chapter 5 is devotedto experimental results relevant to a real-world application framework. Chapter 6 adopts both extensions of the general MIP model and non -linear formulations to tackle two further non-standard packing issues. The final Chapter 7presents conclusions and provides insights regarding prospective developments (including non-standard scheduling aspects). Note:This book studies some of the groundbreaking advances that have been made regarding analytic capacity and its relationship to rectifiability in the decade 19952005. The Cauchy transform plays a fundamental role in this areaand is accordingly one of t he main subjects covered. Another important topic, which may be of independent interest for many analysts, is the so-called non-homogeneous Caldern-Zygmund theory, the development of which has been largelymotivated by the problems arising in connection wi th analytic capacity. The Painlev problem, which was first posed around 1900, consists in finding a description of the removable singularities for bounded analytic functions in metricand geometric terms. Analytic capacity is a key tool in the study of thi s problem. In the 1960s Vitushkin conjectured that the removable sets which have finite length coincide with those which are purely unrectifiable. Moreover,because of the applications to the theory of uniform rational approximation, he posed the question as to whether analytic capacity is semiadditive. This work presents full proofs of Vitushkins conjecture and of the semiadditivity ofanalytic capacity, both of which remained open problems until very recently. Other related questions are also discussed, s uch as the relationship between rectifiability and the existence of principal values for the Cauchy transformsand other singular integrals. The book is largely self-contained and should be accessible for graduate students in analysis, as well as a valuabl e resource for researchers
