Publisher: | New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Birkhuser |

Note: | Many of our daily-life problems can be written in the form of an optimization problem. Therefore, solution methods are needed to solve such problems. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is not always easy to find the exactsolution. However, app roximate solutions can be found. The theory of the best approximation is applicable in a variety of problems arising in nonlinear functional analysis and optimization. This book highlights interesting aspects ofnonlinear analysis and optimization together with many applications in the areas of physical and social sciences including engineering. It is immensely helpful for young graduates and researchers who are pursuing research in thisfield, as it provides abundant research resources for researchers and post-doctoral fellows. This will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who works in the field of applied mathematics, economics and engineering |

Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | New Delhi : Springer India : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book dwells mainly on the optimality aspects of mixture designs. As mixture models are a special case of regression models, a general discussion on regression designs has been presented, which includes topics like continuousdesigns, de la Garza p henomenon, Loewner order domination, Equivalence theorems for different optimality criteria and standard optimality results for single variable polynomial regression and multivariate linear and quadraticregression models. This is followed by a review of t he available literature on estimation of parameters in mixture models. Based on recent research findings, the volume also introduces optimal mixture designs for estimation of optimummixing proportions in different mixture models, which include Scheffs qua dratic model, Darroch-Waller model, log- contrast model, mixture-amount models, random coefficient models and multi-response model. Robust mixture designsand mixture designs in blocks have been also reviewed. Moreover, some applications of mixture designs in areas like agriculture, pharmaceutics and food and beverages have been presented. Familiarity with the basic concepts of designand analysis of experiments, along with the concept of optimality criteria are desirable prerequisites for a clear understan ding of the book. It is likely to be helpful to both theoreticians and practitioners working in the area ofmixture experiments |

Publisher: | Wiesbaden : Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden : Imprint: Springer Spektrum |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Andreas Potschka discusses a direct multiple shooting method for dynamic optimization problems constrained by nonlinear, possibly time-periodic, parabolic partial differential equations. In contrast to indirect methods, thisapproach automatically com putes adjoint derivatives without requiring the user to formulate adjoint equations, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. The author describes and analyzes in detail a globalized inexact SequentialQuadratic Programming method that exploits the mat hematical structures of this approach and problem class for fast numerical performance. Title: | Stability of the Turnpike Phenomenon in Discrete-Time Optimal Control Problems [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Alexander J Zaslavski |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The structure of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems and individual turnpike results for optimal control problems without convexity (concavity) assumptions are examined in this book. Inparticular, the book focus es on the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval, for all sufficiently large intervals these results apply to the so-called turnpike property of the optimalcontrol problems. By encompassing the so-called tu rnpike property the approximate solutions of the problemsare determined primarily by the objective function and are fundamentally independent of the choice of interval and endpointconditions, except in regions close to the endpoints. This bookalso explore s the turnpike phenomenon for two large classes of autonomous optimal control problems. It is illustrated that the turnpike phenomenon is stable for anoptimal control problem if the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problem possesses an asymp totic turnpike property. If an optimal control problem belonging to the first class possesses the turnpike property, then theturnpike is a singleton (unit set). The stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function and of a constraint map is established. For the second class of problems where the turnpike phenomenon is notnecessarily a singleton the stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function is established. Containing solutions of difficult problems in optimal controland presenting new approaches, techniquesand methods this book is of interest formathematiciansworking in optimal control and the calculus of variations. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate stu dents |

Title: | General Pontryagin-Type Stochastic Maximum Principle and Backward Stochastic Evolution Equations in Infinite Dimensions [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Qi L Xu Zhang |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The classical Pontryagin maximum principle (addressed to deterministic finite dimensional control systems) is one of the three milestones in modern control theory. The corresponding theory is by now well-developed in thedeterministic infinite dimensi onal setting and for the stochastic differential equations. However, very little is known about the same problem but for controlled stochastic (infinite dimensional) evolution equations when the diffusionterm contains the control variables and the control domains are allowed to be non-convex. Indeed, it is one of the longstanding unsolved problems in stochastic control theory to establish the Pontryagintype maximum principle for thiskind of general control systems: this book aims to give a solution to thi s problem. This bookwill beuseful for both beginners and experts who are interested in optimal control theory for stochastic evolution equations |

Title: | Solving Non-standard Packing Problems by Global Optimization and Heuristics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Giorgio Fasano |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book results from a long-term research effort aimed at tackling complex non-standard packing issues which arise in space engineering. The main research objective is to optimize cargo loading and arrangement, in compliancewith a set of stringent rules. Complicated geometrical aspects are also taken into account, in addition to balancing conditions based on attitude control specifications. Chapter 1 introduces the class of non-standard packing problemsstudied. Chapter 2 gives a detailed explanatio n of a general model for the orthogonal packing of tetris-like items in a convex domain. A number of additional conditions are looked at in depth, including the prefixed orientation ofsubsets of items, the presence of unusable holes, separation planes and structural elements, relative distance bounds as well as static and dynamic balancing requirements. The relative feasibility sub-problem which is a special casethat does not have an optimization criterion is discussed in Chapter 3. This setting can be ex ploited by introducing an ad hoc objective function, aimed at facilitating the finding of integer-feasible solutions. The third chapter alsodiscusses the issue of tightening the general MIP model by introducing valid inequalities. A MIP-based heuristic ap proach is developed in Chapter 4, where the basic concept of abstract configuration is presented. Chapter 5 is devotedto experimental results relevant to a real-world application framework. Chapter 6 adopts both extensions of the general MIP model and non -linear formulations to tackle two further non-standard packing issues. The final Chapter 7presents conclusions and provides insights regarding prospective developments (including non-standard scheduling aspects). Practitioners and researchers interested in advanced optimization model development and solution in the contextof logistics, transportation systems, complex structures, manufacturing and electronics will find this book useful. Title: | Newton-Type Methods for Optimization and Variational Problems [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Alexey F Izmailov Mikhail V Solodov |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book presents comprehensive state-of-the-art theoretical analysis of the fundamental Newtonian and Newtonian-related approaches to solving optimization and variational problems. A central focus is the relationship between thebasic Newton scheme for a given problem and algorithms that also enjoy fast local convergence. The authors develop general perturbed Newtonian frameworks that preserve fast convergence and consider specific algorithms as particularcases within those frameworks, i.e., as pert urbations of the associated basic Newton iterations. This approach yields a set of tools for the unified treatment of various algorithms, including some not of the Newton type per se. Amongthe new subjects addressed is the class of degenerate problems. In particular, the phenomenon of attraction of Newton iterates to critical Lagrange multipliers and its consequences as well as stabilized Newton methods for variationalproblems and stabilized sequential quadratic programming for optimization. This volume w ill be useful to researchers and graduate students in the fields of optimization and variational analysis |

Note: | This volume presents recent advances in the interaction between Geometric Control Theory and sub-Riemannian geometry. On the one hand, Geometric Control Theory used the differential geometric and Lie algebraic language forstudying controllability, mot ion planning, stabilizability and optimality for control systems. The geometric approach turned out to be fruitful in applications to robotics, vision modeling, mathematical physics etc. On the other hand,Riemannian geometry and its generalizations, such a s sub-Riemannian, Finslerian geometry etc., have been actively adopting methods developed in the scope of geometric control. Application of these methods has led to importantresults regarding geometry of sub-Riemannian spaces, regularity of sub-Riemannian distances, properties of the group of diffeomorphisms of sub-Riemannian manifolds, local geometry and equivalence of distributions and sub-Riemannianstructures, regularity of the Hausdorff volume |

Title: | Analytic Capacity, the Cauchy Transform, and Non-homogeneous CaldernZygmund Theory [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Xavier Tolsa |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book studies some of the groundbreaking advances that have been made regarding analytic capacity and its relationship to rectifiability in the decade 19952005. The Cauchy transform plays a fundamental role in this areaand is accordingly one of t he main subjects covered. Another important topic, which may be of independent interest for many analysts, is the so-called non-homogeneous Caldern-Zygmund theory, the development of which has been largelymotivated by the problems arising in connection wi th analytic capacity. The Painlev problem, which was first posed around 1900, consists in finding a description of the removable singularities for bounded analytic functions in metricand geometric terms. Analytic capacity is a key tool in the study of thi s problem. In the 1960s Vitushkin conjectured that the removable sets which have finite length coincide with those which are purely unrectifiable. Moreover, because of the applications to the theory of uniform rational approximation, he posed the question as to whether analytic capacity is semiadditive. This work presents full proofs of Vitushkins conjecture and of the semiadditivity ofanalytic capacity, both of which remained open problems until very recently. Other related questions are also discussed, s uch as the relationship between rectifiability and the existence of principal values for the Cauchy transformsand other singular integrals. The book is largely self-contained and should be accessible for graduate students in analysis, as well as a valuabl e resource for researchers |

Title: | Econophysics of Agent-Based Models [electronic resource] |

Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | The primary goal of this book is to present the research findings and conclusions of physicists, economists, mathematicians and financial engineers working in the field of Econophysics who have undertaken agent-basedmodelling, comparison with empiric al studies and related investigations. Most standard economic models assume the existence of the representative agent, who is perfectly rational and applies the utility maximization principlewhen taking action. One reason for this is the desire to keep mo dels mathematically tractable: no tools are available to economists for solving non-linear models of heterogeneous adaptive agents without explicit optimization. Incontrast, multi-agent models, which originated from statistical physics considerations, all ow us to go beyond the prototype theories of traditional economics involving the representative agent. This book is based on theEconophys-Kolkata VII Workshop, at which many such modelling efforts were presented. In the book, leading researchers in their fields report on their latest work, consider recent developments and review the contemporary literature |

Title: | Implicit Functions and Solution Mappings [electronic resource] : A View from Variational Analysis |
Author(s): |
Asen L Dontchev R. Tyrrell Rockafellar |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The implicit function theorem is one of the most important theorems in analysis and its many variants are basic tools in partial differential equations and numerical analysis. This second edition of Implicit Functions andSolution Mappings presents an updated and more complete picture of the field by including solutions of problems that have been solved since the first edition was published, and places old and new results in a broader perspective. Thepurpose of this self-contained work is to provide a reference on the topic and to provide a unified collection of a number of results which are currently scattered throughout the literature. Updates to this edition include new sectionsin almost all chapters, new exercises and examples, updated commentarie s to chapters and an enlarged index and references section. From reviews of the first edition: The book commences with a helpful context-setting preface followedby six chapters. Each chapter starts with a useful preamble and concludes with a careful and i nstructive commentary, while a good set of references, a notation guide, and a somewhat brief index complete this study. I unreservedlyrecommended this book to all practitioners and graduate students interested in modern optimization theory or control th eory or to those just engaged by beautiful analysis cleanly described. (Jonathan Michael Borwein, IEEE ControlSystems Magazine, February, 2012) This book is devoted to the theory of inverse and implicit functions and some of its modifications for solution mappings in variational problems. The book is targeted to a broad audience ofresearchers, teachers and graduate students. It can be used as well as a textbook as a reference book on the topic. Undoubtedly, it will be used by mathematicians dealing with functional and numerical analysis, optimization, adjacentbranches and also by specialists in mechanics, physics, engineering, economics, and so on.
