Note:Detection of concealed explosives is anotoriously difficult problem, and many different approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is unique in many ways. It operates in a safe AMradio frequency range, and it can remotely detect unique fingerprint (NQR spectrum) of many explosives, such as TNT or RDX. As such, the detection of target does not depend on the shape or material of the container, or thepresence of metallic object such as triggers etc. Spectra o f chemically similar compounds differ enough that their presence never causes interference or false alarms. Unfortunately, widespread use is prevented due to low sensitivity,radiofrequency interference from the noisy environment, and inability to detect l iquid explosives. This book presents current state of the art of the attempts to overcome NQR sensitivity problem, either by increasing the strengths ofsignals generated, or by increasing the specificity of the technique through a better understanding of the factors that affect the quadrupolar parameters of specific explosives. The use of these specific quadrupolar parameters isdemonstrated on signal processing techniques that can detect weak signals, which are hidden in a noisy background. The problem of differentiation of liquid explosives and benign liquids in closed containers is approached bymeasurements of different nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters. As shown, a couple of solutions has reached a prototype stage and could find their use in a near future

Note:The book covers the flux pinning mechanisms and properties and the electromagnetic phenomena caused by the flux pinning common for metallic, high-Tc and MgB2 superconductors. The condensation energy interaction known for normalprecipitates or grain b oundaries and the kinetic energy interaction proposed for artificial Nb pins in Nb-Ti, etc., are introduced for the pinning mechanism. Summation theories to derive the critical current density are discussed indetail. Irreversible magnetization and AC loss caused by the flux pinning are also discussed. The loss originally stems from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the fluxmotion. The readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hystere sis type in spite of such mechanism. The influence of the flux pinning on the vortex phase diagram in high Tc superconductors is discussed, and the dependencies of theirreversibility field are also described on other quantities such as anisotropy of super conductor, specimen size and electric field strength. Recent developments of critical current properties in various high-Tc superconductors andMgB2 are introduced. Other topics are: singularity in the case of transport current in a parallel magnetic field such as deviation from the Josephson relation, reversible flux motion inside pinning potentials which causes deviationfrom the critical state model prediction, the concept of the minimization of energy dissipation in the flux pinning phenomena which give s the basis for the critical state model, etc. Significant reduction in the AC loss in AC wireswith very fine filaments originates from the reversible flux motion which is dominant in the two-dimensional pinning. The concept of minimum energy dissipation explains also the behavior of flux bundle size which determines theirreversibility line under the flux creep. Note:Ge and IIIV compounds, semiconductors with high carrier mobilities, are candidates to replace Si as the channel in MOS devices. 2D materials like graphene and MoS_2 are also envisioned to replace Si in the future. This thesis is devoted to the firs t-principles modeling of the vibrational properties of these novel channel materials. The first part of the thesis focuses on the vibrational properties of various oxides on Ge, making it possibleto identify the vibrational signature of specific defects which could hamper the proper functioning of MOSFETs. The second part of the thesis reports on the electronic and vibrational properties of novel 2D materials like siliceneand germanene, the Si and Ge 2D counterparts of graphene. The interaction of these 2D materials with metallic and non-metallic substrates is investigated. It was predicted, for the first time, and later experimentally confirmed, thatsilicene could be grown on a non-metallic template like MoS_2, a breakthrough that could open the door t o the possible use of silicene in future nanoelectronic devices

Note:The application of molecules in technological devices hinges on the proper understanding of their behavior on metallic electrodes or substrates. The intrinsic molecular electronic and magnetic properties are modified at a metallicinterface, and great ly depend on the atomic configuration of the molecule-metal bond. This poses certain problems, such as the lack of reproducibility in the transport properties of molecular junctions, but also offers the possibilityto induce new charge and spin configurati ons that are only present at the interface. The results presented in this thesis address this issue, providing a comprehensive overview of the influence of molecule-metal and molecule-moleculeinteractions on the electronic and magnetic properties of molec ules adsorbed on metallic substrates. Using metal-phthalocyanines (MePc), a commonly used metal-organic complex as a model system, each chapter explores different aspectsof the interaction with silver surfaces: the local adsorption geometry, self-assembly , the modifications of the electronic and magnetic characteristics due to hybridization and charge transfer, and finally the manipulation of molecularcharge and spin states by electron doping using alkali atoms moved with the STM tip

Note:Glasses containing metallic nanoparticles exhibit very promising linear and nonlinear optical properties, mainly due to the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of the nanoparticles. The spectral position in the visible andnear-infrared range and polari zation dependence of the SPR arecharacteristically determined by the nanoparticles shapes. The focus of Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites is the interaction of intenseultra-short laser pulses with glass containing silver nanop articles embedded in soda-lime glass, and nanostructural modifications in metal-glass nanocomposites induced by such laser pulses. In order to provide a comprehensive physicalpicture of the processes leading to laser-induced persistent shape transformatio n of the nanoparticles, series of experimental results investigating the dependences of laser assisted shape modifications of nanoparticles with laserpulse intensity, excitation wavelength, temperature are considered. In addition, the resulting local opti cal dichroism allows producing very flexibly polarizing optical (sub-) microstructures with well-specified optical properties. Theachieved considerable progress towards technological application of this technique, in particular also for long-term optical data storage, is also discussed

Starting from the mechanics of deformation, it develops the laws governing macroscopicbehaviour expressed as the constitutive equation s always taking account of the physical phenomena which underlie rheological behaviour. Each chapter is de voted to one of the major classes of material behaviour. Most of the chapters end with a set of exercises, to many of whicheither the full solution or hints on how to obtain this are given each volume is profusely illustrated with explanatory di agrams and with electron-microscope photographs. This book, now in its second edition, has been rigorouslyre-written, updated and modernised for a new generation. The authors improved the existing material, in particular in modifying the organisation, an d added new up-to-date content. Understanding the subject matter requires a goodknowledge of solid mechanics and materials science the main elements of these fields are given in a set of annexes at the end of the first volume. Note:Device Architecture and Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Devices focuses on the design of new device and material concepts for organic light-emitting devices, thereby targeting high current densities and an improved control ofthe triplet concentr ation. A new light-emitting device architecture, the OLED with field-effect electron transport, is demonstrated. This device is a hybrid between a diode and a field-effect transistor. Compared to conventional OLEDs,the metallic cathode is displaced by one to several micrometers from the light-emitting zone, reducing optical absorption losses. The electrons injected by the cathode accumulate at an organic heterojunction and are transported to thelight-emission zone by field-effect. High mobilities for char ge carriers are achieved in this way, enabling a high current density and a reduced number of charge carriers in the device. Pulsed excitation experiments show that pulsesdown to 1 s can be applied to this structure without affecting the light intensity, suggesting that pulsed excitation might be useful to reduce the accumulation of triplets in the device. The combination of all these properties makesthe OLED with field-effect electron transport particularly interesting for waveguide devices and future el ectrically pumped lasers. In addition, triplet-emitter doped organic materials, as well as the use of triplet scavengers inconjugated polymers are investigated

The main THz and MIR source is the quantum cascadelaser (QCL). Thus significant attention is paid to the challenge of turning th is advanced technology into affordable commercial devices so as to exploit its enormous potential. However other alternatives to THz QCLs are also presented,e.g. sub-terahertz imaging from avalanching GaAs bipolar transistors, Josephson junctions as THz s ources, semiconductor materials for pulsed THz sources, superconducting THz electronics with Josephson vortices.
